Large comfortable room, clean, good breakfast
Weak shower, no toiletries, heating on for very short time so was chilly (cold summer day)
The location was good - quiet and close to the town, but not near the busy main road. Lovely gardens and good parking. An attractive building. Spacious room. Very clean. Breakfast was tasty.
Overall Ambleside Lodge looks a bit 'tired'. The decor is neutral but a bit shabby in places, and would benefit from a more contemporary and trendier look, to really highlight the features of the building, and give it some 'wow' factor. The breakfast area was a bit airless, dark and depressing.
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable
The reception area was unwelcoming and dark. The bath towels were inadequate. The system the family undertake at breakfast in terms of task allocation confuses them. Our tea, water, toast ended up on other tables on more than one occasion. The initial welcome was poor having to phone and leave a message to announce our arrival.
Location and parking
hard mattress and creaky 4 poster bed, toilet that wouldn't flush, door lock where key just kept turning so preventing you getting into the room, sofa and carpets needed a good clean, room very dark due to the ceiling being painted blue so needed lights on all time
Convenient location. Staff friendly. Breakfast OK
The place is looks like little has changed in 50 years.......desperate for some serious upgrading!
The elderly couple who run the place clearly cut corners. The towels weren't changed during our 4 night stay, the bin wasn't emptied and the bedroom and bathroom weren't touched. Breakfast was cooked with cheapo products. The room was dim, not helped by the fact that one if the light bulbs needed replacing and the shaver light was broken. All in all, an underwhelming experience in my view and my friend's view.
Loved the location, in the middle of so many nice place and easy to reach by walking, rooms cleaned really well, staff very helpfull and friendly, plenty of parking space and decent size room.
Decoration needs to be brought up to date, corridors are very dark and at the bottom of the hill the sign for the Lodge, just at the junction, is covered up by bushes and trees, if we would have seen this we would not have followed the sign for town.
room o.k quite small, think it might of been a childrens room ? but very clean. beds were nice and comfy, slept really well. the couple running the lodge were really nice people, just not around to ask any queries ? breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. the lodge its self is a large older type building which i liked.
no one was around when you needed them, was looking for someone to ask for some little cartons of milk for coffee, phoned the no on the desk for help but no one was there to answer phone in reception, waited a while then Had to walk back into ambleside town for a carton of milk, was not bothered about the cost of the milk just the inconveinance of having to go back into the town after walking all day. also no hot water the following morning to shower.
breakfast was excellent hot and well cooked staff very friendly
no hand towels no hairdryer and toilet did not flush i would have thought these to be basic necessities.
Family run home with attention to detail. Excellent breakfasts in friendly surroundings. Excellent spot for getting around the Lake District. Plenty of parking and easy walking distance from Ambleside.
Made to feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble.
friendly staff very helpful nice big room
The relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. The building itself is most impressive and the grounds are very good too.
Creaky beds! Could easily wake up anyone who was a light sleeper.
Unapproachable manner of owner. Did not speak during our 3 day stay .
The location was superb , room size excellent food was good.
bit mean on provided toiletries, breakfast room was in the basement with no views
the friendliness of a family run hotel, and the elegance of the building plus we were told we could bring food in if desired for lunch/evening meal and they would provide plates etc.
Perhaps a bar would have been a good addition. I believe the management are thinking about a licence. Signage on the one way system, we took the wrong lane at first, but as Ambleside isn't a huge place we soon found the lodge.
If you are looking for a comfortable bed, clean room and no frills kind of place to rest your head while exploring Ambleside then this is perfect. The staff were fairly friendly.
The main negative for me was the shower, it was impossible to maintain a temperature (I was scaled a couple of times) and the water went all over the bathroom which inevitably had a long term damp smell to it. Breakfast seemed like a rather a hurried and stressful affair. All guests are require to attend between 8.30 and 9.00 which creates a lot of work for the staff who dash around trying to make sure everyone is served promptly, which to their credit they achieve, but there is little or no opportunity to ask for a refill of coffee or juice (we seem to be rationed to I cup each). Coffee in my room was not topped up either although staff did provide this when I asked.
The Lodge is less than 5 minutes walk to Ambleside. The first impression of the lodge was a cross between a Victorian / Munsters house, but on walking inside the staff were pleasant and showed us to our room even though we were very early. The rooms are large and clean. My husband said breakfast was good, although the scrambled eggs were pulverised.
The Lodge could be a really good place to stay, but it does need some money spent on it - bathrooms in particular - to bring it up to date.
Mostly I liked the "atmosphere" of the lodge especially the attitude of the staff, friendly and relaxed but efficient. The rooms had good facilities and were comfortable and clean and the breakfasts great.Excellent value for money.
The initial search for the lodge. A sign at the bottom of the hill in the one-way system might have been helpful. However, the circuits were definitely worthwhile when the the lodge was reached. (a large room with a four poster bed !)
Location great, staff friendly and helpful. Room comfortable and clean.
Water temperature very erratic, toilet poor flush, bathroom shelf hanging from the wall. TV in room badly positioned so couldn't be seen from the bed.
the food was excellent and the stay was very relaxed the staff were very efficient and friendly
The loverly welcome we received
Very good breakfast plenty of choice
Friendly staff. Breakfast choices were good, and we weren't kept waiting.
Decor was a little shabby. Shower not hot enough one morning.
Location was fab. Really clean accommodation. Breakfast was excellent
There was a problem on arrival regarding the booking which was booked by booking.com. They had not sent any confirmation of the booking to Ambleside lodge, so they had to sort a room out for us, which was fortunate for us, otherwise they could of turned us away. They was very helpful.
