“Good quality rooms. Cheap prices and good value for money.”
Thomas,
Wakefield
At the edge of the Lake District, this family-run hotel combines 19th century oak-beamed charm with 21st century amenities, and offers the ideal base for exploring the Lake District. Barrow-in-Furness is just 15 minutes from the Lake District, is close to South Lakes Wildlife Park (the top tourist destination in the Lake District), Furness Abbey, Piel Island and other tourist attractions. And, as the ‘indoor centre for the Lakes’, there’s plenty to do if you’re unlucky with the weather. If you want to go out in the evening, you will find a multiplex cinema, a bowling alley and numerous restaurants within a few minutes’ walk. The hotel itself has 17 en suite, well-appointed bedrooms. Each room has a flat-screen TV with around 150 channels and Wi-Fi internet access. Hotel Rooms: 17 Most recent booking for this hotel was yesterday at 15:02 from United Kingdom.

I really like what the Ambrose are trying to achieve. The staff are really friendly, the drinks in the main bar are very reasonably priced, the breakfast is excellent. No its not the Ritz but it looks after its guests the rooms are clean, its a little dated but I have stayed there before and they are updating and redecorating in fact I have seen a huge improvement since my last visit. I have listed the description of the hotel as budget however, there is not a suitable category for this hotel as I dont know any budget hotel that gives all its customers a large tv, Wifi (free), sky tv, soap, shampoo, hand and body lotion in every room and offers a warm friendly service. If you want luxury and modern go stay at a five star and pay the going rate. If you want excellent value for money in a relaxed atmosphere, you cant go wrong with the Ambrose. By the way they will let you take a small dog and do not charge, I did and the cook even offered to cook her a sausage for breakfast. Well done Ambrose.

We choose the Ambrose Hotel as we were looking for some where to stay in/around the Lake District that gave us value for money. This place (£50 per night with breakfast) was exactly that. It is 45 mins drive away from the heart of the Lakes (Windermere/Ambleside), the rooms were newly decorated and comfortable with tea/coffee making facalities in the room, large tv and sky, fresh towels and good cleaning every day. It was warm and comfortable. The breakfast was great, full english available, as well as continental. It's basically an old pub, with rooms above. The drinks (as I read in another review) were very reasonable in price. The pub is not that (or wasn't when we were there) busy, so the noise didn't bother us. We also have no problem with parking, and parked right out front on the street with no problems. There is a good restaurant called The Duke of Edinbourgh just a few minutes down the road that I also recommend. As a vegetarian, the breakfast was just minus the meat. I would suggest getting in some vege sausages!

The staff were extremely friendly and made us very welcome. We enjoyed a delicious home cooked evening meal which was very good value for money. Breakfast was also very good with cerels and toast available to help yourself to and the chef made me poached egg on toast. A very enjoyable stay.

The phrase "never judge a book by it's cover" springs to mind. The staff were very helpful and polite , the food the young chef made was magnificent and interesting and of a "a'la carte" standard, everyone should visit the Ambrose for its food alone .My family really enjoyed our stay we would recomend this hotel to any of our family and friends the hotel was clean, staff were lovely the food outstanding and to get full english breakfast with the price just amazing. Me and my family would definitely stay at theAmbrose again.

On first sight it looks run down and the location is poor. Inside looks like a local pub. Rooms were freezing cold and when we complained nothing was done. Only one towel per room asked for more we didn't receive them. At breakfast the staff were arguing with each other in front of customers. Two of our breakfasts had hairs in them. No one could work the till so my daughter couldn't buy a drink. The staff continued to argue it was worse than faulty towers. Checking out was a joke took 45 mins . The manager then appeared with a cigarette behind his ear looking very scruffy. We will complain to the hotel about our stay and would advise everyone to never stay there.

Breakfast was enjoyable a decent size full cooked english breakfast, it was fairly good value for money in terms of the room size. Our room had a full range of Sky tv channels which was good and there are bar facilities below your rooms, which were not too loud. There are also a number of food establishments near by which offer nice food. The main bedroom was split into three single beds which was not ideal for a family, the room was a bit dated and could do with modernisation. There was a knob missing of the draws, a bulb missing from the side lamp and the door knob on the wardrobe fell off.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Minor point - the entrance could be tidied up E.G. flower tubs, to make it more inviting to possible passing customers. Our room was over the bar and were kept awake until midnight with noisy drinkers below. However, we would book again if we need to visit Barrow.

Good location. Convenient to the Tesco and surrounding shops as well as the restaurants in town. Also close to bae. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere in the bar at night. The rooms need some upkeep. It was clean and fairly comfortable, but there were several little things - a leaky faucet, very noisy bathroom fan, and a saggy mattress. However, I think these are relflected in the discount price versus the other hotels in town.

We had an excellent breakfast served in the morning and for what we paid, I was very happy with the room. Our room was very close to the stairs which meant it was even more noisy for us. As the hotel was not full they should have filled the top floor first.
