What a great place to stay as we approached the end of our walk on the Coast to Coast Trail! Good room, good place to start from on the last day of walking. At dinner, friends showed up -- even those staying elsewhere, because this is the best place to eat in town.
Great pub with lovely atmosphere after walking along C2C trail. Met with other walkers and as usual the conversation was around the walk. Lovely staff with food sense of humour and the food was just what was needed after a day walking. Would recommend to anyone wanting a nice cosy, friendly stop.
the whole experience,views ,room,location.
the welcome the breakfast the comfortable bed the parking the location
The food and service was enjoyable, they were all friendly. The pub itself looked very nice and cosy and the bedroom looked nice.
We did not have any towels provided and we were not warned of this before turning up. There was a party happening until 2am which we were only told about when we arrived. There was clear signs of damp in the room, for example the ceiling was stained and the carpets felt damp under foot. When we returned from our wedding party one of the single beds had a soaking wet duvet. The explanation given in the morning was that maybe the ceiling had leaked when it rained... The toilet flushing system was not very plesant either, it was a 'saniflo' system and was awfully noisy and seemed blocked at times, we were constantly worried that it was going to break (we understand it is an old building but there must be better solutions?).
Country Pub The Breakfast! Location Friendly Staff Excellent value
The location suited a particular celebration in the locality that we were attending.
The en suite room was clean and comfortable with tea/coffee-making facilities. The staff were delightful and welcoming. Excellent food in the restaurant with two real ales available. An excellent situation to start countless walks and plenty of other attractions easily available locally. Four trains a day each way and local bus services make the car somewhat redundant!
Real ales not up to scratch. Room for myself and my son a little on the small size but adequate. An annual horse show caused chaos in the restaurant one evening; it could have been much better handled with forward planning based on previous years' experiences.
Very smart breakfast/dining room. Meal soon arrived. Very freindly. Hot choc amongst bedroom drinks.
No shelf in bathroom for toiletries and such gear. Dodgy kettle. Very hard flat seats on those smart chairs in the dining room!
meals good, staff friendly and helpful.
rooms rather cramped
Very friendly staff. We arrived too late for the restaurant but had bought some food on the way there. We were welcomed and supplied with plates, knives, forks, etc., and shown to the bar where we ate amid a happy throng of visitors and locals. The highlight of the trip was, as we were driving up the road to the Arncliffe, first a young deer slowly crossed the road on front of us then, a few moments later, a large badger ambled across as well. Fantastic.
Friendly staff Excellent Breakfast Good location
Unwashed cutlery found in Double room and cobwebs in bathroom Hair found in bathroom in single room
Suited purpose for one night
Friendly staff, beautiful location, lovely breakfast, very good value for the price.
The single room I was in was a little dated and the bed not the most comfortable I have slept in, also I was above the bar area and there was some noise until after midnight. There is no chair or desk/table area which meant I had to work sitting on the bed with the laptop on my knee but these are minor criticisms and I would happily stay there again.
A wayside pub with charm in a beautiful setting. The food was basic but very good. The small and cosy room was comfortable and clean. The staff were fun. I would happily stay here again. It makes me smile
The shower door and towel rail needs maintenance
It was clean, comfortable and the staff were friendly.
We thought we had paid in advance but only a deposit was taken. This led to confusion and minor inconvenience at checkout.
Only stayed one night on our Coast to Coast walk. It was reasonable value for the money. A hearty breakfast set us up for the day - and it was the only one to offer black pudding and hash browns - very comprehensive! The friendly landlord made us feel welcome would recommend this area. It is very close to the station for transport into Whitby also - very handy!
A bit noisey, even past 11pm, although it was a Friday night and it is a Pub so can hardly complain! A fruit selection at breakfast would have equalled other rivals.
Good location for the coast to coast. Good pub food at a reasonable price.
Staff having an unprofessional discussion in the bar area. I felt this should have been conducted away from the public.
The room was neat and tidy. The rooms were attached to an Inn to have a meal and drinks.
Room a little small for us.
Proper pub, great location, friendly owners and staff.Good beer and food. Will be back.
Bed and pillows not great, but maybe that was me.
setting and excellent breakfast
Good atmosphere in the bar with very friendly and helpful staff. Cooked breakfast was good.
Probably a good place as a stopover for walkers but not our cup of tea. Room and bathroom were small and could do with bit of renovation. Beds were quite comfortable. Did not enjoy the bar food.
Friendly staff, good beer, lovely cake
Excellent hosts, lively evening in the bar.1st class breakfast and location lives up to the typical Yorkshireman's view that it's God's country!
The people, the staff and the food were all excellent, first class. Sam, the barman is an asset to this pub, his personailty is exactly what is needed.
The tiny room was grubby at best, full of flies; we spent most of the evening spraying them with hairspray to kill them, the bed was rickety, the shower was in need of a thorough clean, including the glass and we didn't use it because of this. We didn't sleep as we felt 'grubby'.Definately overpriced and over rated.
