This historic hotel, built in 1779, has free parking and an excellent location about 200 metres from Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth Harbour Rail Station, Gunwharf Quays and Spinnaker...

good location, comfortable bed, nice bar area
expensive parking, unusable shower (room 4)
Good location and quiet. Staff friendly and breakfast was very nice.
Parking a bit tricky although I was lucky to park in the street in front of the hotel and received a parking permit otherwise the public car park at the back costs £12 for overnight. Restaurant was unfortunately closed on the night I stayed [Monday] which I would have tried as it was a very cold night. Their are plenty of pubs/bars/restaurants a short walk away.
A well maintained pub. Recently taken over but you can see the care to detail and high standards taking place. Excellent comfy rooms with coffee etc., very friendly/chatty staff. Good breakfast.
You can't park at the hotel. There is a car park but it's quite expensive. Or park on main road which is 5 mins from hotel which is cheaper and you don't pay from 6pm until 8am
Everything! room, good, host hospitable and a great breakfast, would definately return and recomend. My wife and I wanted a night away for ourselves, usualy being at home with a large family we rarely get time to ourselves, so it was good to treat ourselves ton evening away and Ashby's gave us just that. Thank's.
Couls not find fault.
The staff were really friendly and helpful, it was a quiet and clean hotel, the location was excellent and the Wifi was also excellent. My room was serviced promptly while I was out, and while I didnt actually eat here at all as I had an early start (so cant comment on the food), they offered to make me something to take with me which was really really kind. So all in all it was excellent and not at all deserving of any negative reviews. I would highly recommend and will happily stay here again.
The only problem is parking as the hotel doesnt have any of its own. There is free street parking a street away between 6pm and 8am, and if you are lucky enough to get a park outside the hotel you will be given a pass to ensure you dont get a ticket.
bedroom good price on the day
no parking had meal of lamb shank, vegetables cooked perfectly, while lamb cold in the middle wifi dropped out
Location was within easy walking distance to everywhere we wanted to visit.
The photos were really different comparing to the real place
Friendliness & helpfulness of owners. Location.
Clean, tidy twin room was warm and comfortable. Too hungover to make it down for breakfast unfortunately. Friendly owner. Ample car parking in public car park in Ashby Place.
Public car park is quite expensive (approx. £24 per day).
Very pleasant stay. Nothing to complain about.good staff excellent breakfast.very enjoyable stay. Thank you
Our stay was excellent, all very friendly staff and guests, all you needed for a good comfortable stay.
Just the milk in the room, as do not like uht but fully understand the reason for it.
The location was convenient.
The Owners attitude. We were evicted late on a Sunday evening because we had a pug dog. We clearly stated this on our booking form- which they never checked. He took our money, will not return it as he is now alleging damage which was not the case and not mentioned at the time. Awful experience, awful attitude. Be warned.
Bed extremely comfortable, nice furnishings, pub was done out very well.
Wouldn't like to go with a car as parking could be expensive.
Friendly staff, interior .
Lack of parking
Stayed one night on a shopping break, lovely place. Clean, comfy and a very warm welcome, would go definitely go back.
Couldnt do enough for you fab. !
Stayed here for a night out in Gunwharf with my boyfriend. Fantastic little find, really good value for money and made to feel more than welcome by the fantastic and knowledgeable staff. Thanks again! We will be back! :)
Location is excellent. Room spacious, comfortable and nice décor. Reasonable rates.
Proprietor new to this hotel,about 2 weeks,very friendly,helpful & knowledgeable,regarding Portsmouth.Would definately return.Recommended.
Excellent location, very welcoming and friendly staff.
The landlord is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. The bedroom we had was tastefully decorated as were the lounge and dining room.
The hotel was difficult to find due to the fact it is in a small side street. Parking is limited and if you have to park on the public car park it is expensive.
Breakfast was ok have had better in a transport cafe
Room was tired & cold. The window in the bathroom was rotten and needed replacing. Mould on bathroom blind. Very cheap mattress, this place has potential just needs a lot of money throwing at it first
