With oak beams and open fires, this charming 17th-century inn features a leafy garden and traditional restaurant. The Roebuck sits on the A22 road, on the edge of Royal Ashdown Forest.
Score from 346 reviews Very good
Water pressure in the shower was poor. That's all I can think of to criticise.
The choice of breakfast was very good The opens fires are a real delight The concierge were so friendly and really helpful
It's ridiculous that there isn't free wi fi
Stayed here a feew times now and you can't beat it. Don't know why it's not a four star when dreadrul places like the Graand in Eastbourne is.
Lovely lounges to relax in and beautiful dining room. Great indoor pool and facilties like tennis courts, table tennis, golf etc. Friendly staff.
Went for our wedding anniversary, the hotel we found out had only a conference for 20 people and 5 other rooms booked that night out of a total of over 100 bedrooms. No upgrade offered which we thought was a bit mean. Some nougat and a card instead. !!! Food is ok but nothing special. Quite expensive for ok food. Breakfast was better. in summary did really like the hotel, its facilities and grounds. Would stay again but probably wouldn't eat there unless the food improved. Also would be nice if management showed some goodwill last like many hotels do to upgrade for a special occasion if they obviously have plenty of availablity to do so. It creates goodwill.
Staff Building Breakfast High standard throughout
Bed rather soft Spa and pool not exceptional Heating impossible to regulate
The most excellent service & attention to detail.
Location, atmosphere, parking
Difficulty accessing room without elevator, need to ask for iron, lack of wifi in room
Our room was lovely although it's a fair walk to the reception and dining rooms, great location and amazing historical building.
The pool is dire, really shabby and in desperate need of TLC, not enough loungers, dark, peeling paint. It's advertised as a spa and thus having a lovely pool should be top priority for the chain.
Superb service. Sublime breakfast.
Wider choice of certain spirits ie Gin and rose wines
We were there for a wedding, we thought the food at the wedding very poor & not enough of it!
Care and consideration from staff
Lovely location. Attentive staff. Great variety for breakfast.
The shower didn't work in room no. 011.
Grand style and comfort Wonderful setting, great service and attention to detail
Lack of a lift
Friendly...superb setting ..excellent food & friendly staff
First night toilet fault ...had to repack & move to another room. Otherwise no problems & this is a return visit.
No tea or coffee facility's in room. Bathroom a little small
Beautiful rooms en suite. Staff very friendly and courteous. Dining room superb romantic atmosphere enhanced by pianist.food excellent.
We felt the hotel was too hot BUT you can't please everyone!
The location was amazing. The staff could not have been more helpful. Liked everything about our visit.
the food was excellent and the staff very polite and professional. Enjoyed the leisure facilities. A nice big log fire in reception was welcoming. Staff always used name, which is nice. We brought our dog and they were very accommodating and clearly understood dogs. Our suite was big and looked over the golf course. Would have been lovely in the summer.
The food was excellent, the service in the hotel was absolutely faultless, the room was large, clean, everything you would want from a hotel stay
I rang to book a spa treatment for my girlfriend and myself about a week previous to our booking date and was told I would be called back as they were busy, I didn't receive a phone call so called a couple of days later and was then told the only appointment available now was on our checkout day early in the morning. When our appointment came round we got up early and checked out so we would be at our appointment on time. We walked over to the spa and were told by the receptionist "sorry but the therapist hasn't turned up for work. well... You know.. it's Sunday" basically implying she was hungover. We were offered a complimentary drink
Amazing place to stay, beautiful building and grounds, service was excellent albeit slow.
We stayed in room 9, which is one of the newly refurbished rooms. I am a light sleeper and kept on waking up from the noise in the corridor and the stairs. Facilities are great but there are only few loungers next to the swimming pool and this discourages people of enjoying it.
We went to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Our original holiday plan, a trip to the far east, had to be cancelled as I was advised not to travel being pregnant. And so we looked at some options close to home, and Ashdown came at the top. It was a wonderful from word go - we got a complimentary upgrade to a suite, which was very well appointed with a spa tub :) Our little one was given a (very full!) goody bag that she was thrilled to recieve. There were a lot of little touches that we appreciated - a personal note from the manager wishing us a happy anniversary, our spa appointments were rescheduled to fit our changed scheduled without any fuss amongst others. Our little one loved the pool and didn't want to come out! It was a lovely weekend, and we would love to go back
Park setting, comfortable rooms, quiet atmosphere.
No wifi, long gloomy corridors, dining room overbooked, spa pool in poor condition, overpriced for services provided.
Very polite staff, extremely professional service, the breakfast buffet has everything you need, the quality of the food is excellent. The restaurant is definitely worth visiting, they make it really special. The spa is enjoyable, too, you can relax in the jacuzzi or swim in the pool. The building is amazing, the location could not be any better. Overall, this hotel is a fantastic place to be, I can only recommend it to everyone.
Very attentive staff, good food, beautiful location.
