Staff friendly and helpful, cooked a great breakfast. Best hotel bed in a long while. Room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. Basic but very acceptable. Not en suite bathroom facilities, but we had a key to an allocated bathroom across hall which were faultless.

Athol house is a simpel cheap bed& breakfast, no en-suite facilities, and you notice that in the price. But the rooms are spacious, the manager very friendly and it is centrally located for both visits to city and beach. Breakfast was good and filling. As always with sharing facilities there are people not thinking of others. Meeting a disgusting toilet at 6 in the morning (before the manager had got up) is one of those things. But there was another bathroom at the ground floor. And you get what you pay for.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms generous size with comfortable chair and work desk. Free wifi. Doesn't say on the website it's a shared bathroom and that is just not fair. It's up to you to make an informed decision whether you want this or not but if you don't know you can't.

My room was large and spacious. I had a wash hand basin, a kitchenette, a microwave oven and a tv. There was also wireless broadband. Athol House is also located in a sea side town, and is very close to Newcastle upon Tyne. Also, the host was very friendly and welcoming.

The proprietor was very friendly and helpful. It was our first day in England and he gave us great advice about how to get to the places we wanted to see. The facilites were clean and comfortable. Even though our room was not ensuite, the bathrooms were near our room, very clean and there was never a wait to use them. I would recommend this place to anyone wanteing to visit the North Sea.

The breakfast was I can truthfully say the best " full English" I have ever had! Very nice atmosphere, comfortable, exceptionally clean, if it had en-suite to the bedrooms it would be the ideal budget stay.

Stayed for weekend of Take That Concert, 5 minute walk into town and easy link to the stadium of light via metro - basic b&b accomodation, very friendly and helpful owners, room comfy, breakfast fresh and hot! Never been to South Sheilds before, nice sea front and worth another visit. Considering the price of accomodation in Sunderland on the concert nights, I think we had a good deal and would use again if going to another concert No en-suite's (plenty of room in the rooms to convert??) / Parking on side street, although well lit /

We were disappointed at this hotel because it was not clear at the time of booking that we would have to share a shower room. It was made worse by having to go up and down a steep flight of stairs to get to these rooms and then having to queue in the morning to get into one. Dining room was far to small to accomadate all the hotel guests and the smoking area was right underneath an open window leading into the kitchen and dining room.

It was clean and fumctional for our needs. I didn't realise it wasn't on-suite which surprised me but that is based on assumption most places are on-suite now. A day after we left I received a phone call from Athol House advising we had left without paying. I did remind we had paid cash which they remembered and were apologetic but I was left with an uneasy feeling, I had wished I had asked for a receipt as they did not provide one.
