Stopped a couple of days in Devizes on our way to Wales. Great market town with lots of food and water holes. The White Bear is a buzzing little pub, with friendly customers and attentive hosts. Will return again, when hopefully the weather is nicer to us!

Lovely Georgian town with many original buildings.
Lovely Georgian town with many original buildings. The Caen Locks of historic interest and good to walk alongside. A good cafe at the top of the locks.
We ate at an Indian Restaurant opposite the Castle Hotel; excellent food.

I like Wadworth beer and as the brewery is here there was plenty of opportunity to go beer drinking. All the pubs we tried were interesting and friendly and the beer was well kept in all of them.
We had a good walk along the canal to see the long flight of locks and there were interesting shops in the town. We liked the tea shop in the Ginnal and the bakery for sourdough bread. Everyone we met was friendly.

Devizes looks a little bit rundown.
Devizes looks a little bit rundown. Beautiful buildings are not restored and kept at their best which is a great pity. One popular eating place had filthy windows with bird excrement on them which reflects a lack of pride and cleanliness of the people who own or rent out these buildings. A lot more money needs to be invested in Devizes if it is to attract people. It would be a shame to let this historic town go to complete ruin. People should take pride in their heritage and at the very least clean their shop front, shop windows and paint the façades.
However, Devizes is better than Crewkerne and Chard.

Devizes is far too reticent about its charms.
Devizes is far too reticent about its charms. It is a lovely small market town in the heart of some glorious countryside. It is packed with history and adjacent to the beautiful Kennet & Avon Canal (especially the astonishing engineering feat of the Caen Hill Lock Flight, 30 mins' walk from the town centre). The town has many traditional pubs, and shops are quirky and individual rather than the standard chain stores you can find anywhere. (But don't come for a shopping experience.)

Devizes is the most beautiful Wiltshire market town , full of architectural delights . The flight of 29 locks on the canal is an engineering wonder ! Devizes has wonderful countryside walks nearby including Roundway Hill and Drews Pond . There are good independent shops , a plethora of charity shops and a good variety of pubs , restaurants and cafes . Recommend The Black Swan , The New Society Cafe (great cake !) and Reeves the bakers .
The Little House is in a central location in Devizes. Ideal for a couple or individual and, in our opinion, much nicer than staying in a hotel. It was spotlessly clean and very well appointed - everything had been thought of. A useful welcome pack with all the necessary items for breakfast was provided, along with WiFi, charging points, a smart TV, hairdryer, well equipped kitchen, comfortable bed and contemporary shower room.
Location excellent, very central to town centre. Evening meal and breakfast was excellent as well. Due to un-foreseen circumstances our daughter and partner were unable to travel and stay at the last minute and we were unable to cancel their booking but the hotel did discount back half of the room cost as a gesture of goodwill. Very much appreciated as they didn't have to do this. Would thoroughly recommend.
By far the best hotel in Devizes: the staff were unbelievably welcoming, as if I were a family member. Nothing was too much trouble.
Food was excellent - the service exceptional. Despite the bar being very busy on one night due to a local event - the staff still had time to make sure everything was ok, even delivering food to my room as there weren't any tables spare. Will only be staying here in future.
Beautiful little B&B located in the center of Devizes within walking distance to lots of pubs, restaurants and shops. Our room was immaculately clean and beautifully appointed. Pretty much the most comfortable bed and pillows we have ever had in a B&B. The breakfast hamper was delicious and thoughtfully put together. Wonderful accommodation for a very reasonable cost. We would definitely stay here again.
I bought this stay at the hotel as a last-minute birthday present for a friend who hadn't been able to find accommodation in the area for an event she was going to. She was incredibly happy with the stay and said it was clean, spacious and staff provided excellent service. I was a bit apprehensive as it was literally the only room left in Devizes, so thrilled to discover that it was a good choice!
What a find. Forget your Travel Lodges or Premier Inns, this hotel was superb value for money and includes a cooked breakfast. Room was spotless as indeed were the hotel's corridors. Ate in the dining room during the evening. Had to wait for the slow cooked meat(s) to arrive but it was well worth the wait, everything was freshly prepared.
Staff were friendly and efficient. Hotel was close to my meeting. Parking was free. Breakfast included in price and included "proper bacon" for once, not industrial stuff with white scum oozing out. The shower was the best I have experienced in a long time. Powerful and plenty of hot water.
The quintessential B and B! Gorgeous setting and exquisite house. Rooms are comfy and sparking clean. The breakfast is a gourmand’s delight. And the hosts are lovely, funny, and helpful. I actually teared up when I left. Of all of the b and bs that I stayed in in my life, this was the best.
The landlady Natalie gave us a very warm welcome on arrival. The room was spotlessly clean and modern, and although central to Devizes it was exceptionally quiet. Long term car parking was available nearby and overall we could not have been happier with our experience at The Pelican.
Location perfect as in middle of Devizes yet quiet and tranquil. Free parking also a bonus. Bedding was high quality, bathroom spotless and recently refurbished. Breakfast, chosen from list the night before, was supplied to room in hamper which we ate in courtyard, lovely.
Loved the setting, felt very tucked away and private with lovely views, yet minutes away from the centre of Devizes. Great location.
Caroline is a wonderful host and she makes a very impressive breakfast.
I'm sure I'll be back at some point.
The Bear Hotel is a venerable old pile, full of character. The staff friendly and helpful and the food excellent. We found the room spacious with good facilities. A great place to base yourself for visits in the area.
Fantastic hotel, fabulous people, lunch was great, as was breakfast and our twin room was exceptional. Thank you for going out of your way to make our stay so great! Keep doing what you’re doing xx
Acceptional breakfast everything tasty and nicely cooked. Service good with a smile. Bedroom large and very comfy bed. Large, modern ensuite shower room. Really cant fault the hotel in any way.
Very convenient for our purpose prior to narrow boat trip. Nice view of street and city center. The meal was fantastic, best meal of entire stay in England. Great staff and host, very helpful.
An excellent apartment for 2 people. Comfortable bed, cooking facilities and decor. Very handy for Devizes town centre, the Kennet and Avon canal and other local attractions.
I loved this place and fell in love with Devizes - a typically English market town. I had a lovely time exploring after a long bike ride.
Comfy room and nice people
