Nice quiet rooms. Imposing lounge and breakfast room Half way through my stay I was moved from Ballantrae West End (my room there was not luxurious or specially comfortable) to Ballantrae East End, which was excellent. West is near Haymarket Station and East is situated not too far from Waverley Station. Staff sorted out problems immediately. Continental breakfast was fine. The Balantrae West hotel itself is fine but not very 'visible' due to black signage outside. My single 'duplex' room wasn't really comfortable or convenient (the bathroom was down stairs) - only one coathanger, no wardrobe, broken sash window etc No dislikes about Ballantrae East.

Very helpful and friendly staff (especially girl at the reception who helped us a lot). The hotel located in a beautiful old building with nice surroundings, close to Princes street (around 2 min walk) and Edinburgh Castle (around 10 min walk). Nice and quiet area. Our room had a garden view and was very calm (with birds singing in the miorning). Good breakfast. We certanly would stay here again.

Very good structure with a big room and comfortable beds. All is very clean and tidy and the staff most helpful and friendly. Breakfast very good and excellent location just by Haymarket Station and close to the beautiful St. Mary Church.

I think my stay was exceptional because the hotel was not full and I was given a lovely room at the side of the courtyard. Very traditional room, very spacious with such a wonderful view that one could just have stayed in the room enjoying that view. I do not know the other room therefore I do not know if my room was normal or an exception. Friendly staff, nice breakfast room and sufficient choice for breakfast.

Helpful staff, quiet location but close to centre and railway station. Relaxed atmosphere. The continental breakfst could have been better with a choice of bread or rolls rather than just croissants

It's a charming hotel, 7min from Haymarket station which makes it really convenient if you are travelling by train. The hotel's staff was very friendly and helpful. It was a great location - a very quiet part of the town, yet near enough to be able to walk to the centre and the castle itself. Would definitely use it again and would recommend to anyone who comes for a city trip. the breakfast choice was a bit on a modest side. The interior and the service though were very good.

Family room was really huge and clean. Everything in the hotel seemed very spacious. Good continental breakfast. Staff very friendly. There is no parking and the nearest car parking is at about 10 minutes walking distance, and if one needs to stay for more than one night this adds significantly to the daily rate and takes away any advantage the hotel would have over others in more convenient locations. There was only one member of staff to attend both reception and the dining room the next morning.

This is a really good hotel for a budget. If you want a comfortable bed, decent shower and to be within five minutes walk of the eicc or prince's street, this is a great value hotel. The building is delightful and I would certainly use it again. It may not be as plush as some of the other places around but you couldn't stay in them for this price!

The shower was not working. The noise of the telephone at reception kept waking me up. Not told you have to order cooked breakfast the day before.

Staff were really really friendly and helpful. One morning we had to leave very early and they prepared breackfast anyway. Also, when I had to leave, after the checkout, they let me use a bathroom to get ready. Good location, at 15 minutes from Princes street.
