Score from 200 reviews Good
The location is fantastic. Loved the ponies and cows on the lawns.
The rooms were on the same level as a travel lodge, I expected more for what we paid.
The ability to travel with the animals.
Noisey and breakfast cooking smells through the windows was off putting.
Wonderful setting and terrific standard of accommodation.
the pool friendliness of restaurant staff good breakfast
tiny bathroom - door hit the toilet seat no recognition by receptionist that we had arrived, she stayed on the 'phone and made another call whilst we waited. food took some time but we were not in a hurry. Gin and tonic went to another table - but we got it back. whole hotel covered in scaffolding which spoilt appearance
Location, clean room, nice bar/ lounge area Bar food was lovely.
Although breakfast was lovely we had to keep asking for the tea and coffee several times, it came in the end though and staff did apologise.
The bed didn't look as if it had been changed. Creaking floorboards at night.
Location but very expensive for what it was
being charged for late room book out
Room very mediocre for the money
The smell, it was dirty and not good value for money
Location, ambiance, clean bedroom and en suite, comfortable bed ( though only 4'6" ) Character of building. Breakfast (though at extra cost)
We thought the room was expensive considering no breakfast was included and the bed was only 4'6" and uncomfortably warm at night despite open window. Restaurant service was polite but sloooowww.
The location, peace and quiet. Dinner food was very good.
Poor restaurant staff skills
We liked everything about the hotel
Service and staff lovely
Rooms too hot and creaky floorboards they need nailing down
Reception staff and serving staff polite, courteous and enthusiastic. The room was swiftly and efficiently serviced whilst we took breakfast, a turn down service was offered. Hotel located on the edge of Brockenhurst a shortish walk from the village centre where there were a selection of eateries if the hotel didn't suit. Excellent breakfast buffet and good to have hot plates! Good Free wifi available.
I do not consider it lived up to its four star rating, three at a pinch. The so called "superior" room was far from it I would have expected a couple of comfy armchairs rather than the ubiquitous tub chair and dining chair at the desk (which was too wide to fit under thus encroaching on the limited floor space). The memory foam bed was not particularly comfortable and certainly not for sitting on in the absence of armchairs. The bathroom was ok but the sanitary fittings were of poor quality. The bath water had a brownish colour which it don't know if this was due to peaty water or rust in the plumbing! For a spa hotel I would have expected bathrobes in the room. The "Beresford" restaurant promised fine dining but failed to come up to expectation and the service was uninspiring but perhaps I'd been spoiled by a proper fine dining experience elsewhere a couple of days prior. The following day we tried the bar menu which was better but marred by my wife finding a facial hair in her risotto. Finally upon checking out I discovered an expensive bar bill and found that £30 worth of G&T added to the bill. On the day in question I had consumed a bottle of beer and my wife a cocktail! A reminder to always check you bill! Overall a lot of money for a very mediocre hotel experience.
Food was excellent. Very comfortable room and wonderfully comfortable bed! Staff were excellent too. Lovely receptionist too.
We were attending a wedding; the venue seemed ideal and the food was excellent.
The bar prices were very expensive (seemed to be the most expensive hotel bar I have come across) considering the cost of the rooms as well it made a very expensive weekend ......
rooms, pools, staff and location
evening meal and the time it took to be served.
staff very friendly and helpful. we were upgraded to a very pleasant room with balcony.
taxi ordered through hotel took 35 mins to arrive so we missed our preferred train back to London. if the hotel had a list of available taxis rather than dealing with one firm this delay might have been avoided.
Having stayed at the Balmer Lawn before I was expecting very high standards as before. However the standards have dropped below what I expect from a four star hotel
Room 53 is very small. The bottom set of windows were locked and took two days before anybody opened them. The bill is strange as crisps come under beach hut and they add donations to a local charity without asking. The toilet kept running once flushed , the shower head had one adjustment down. There was no ventilation. If you are given room 53 reject it as the heat and noise from the staff will wake you.
friendly staff, helpful with things like a taxi, good range of food and drink options. Well considered parking - making most of space with marked spaces. Outdoor pool at comfortable temperature. Indoor gym a good temp and reasonably well-equipped. Was worried about being overwhelmed by wedding guests but they seemed to have a separate area and the main hotel remained a lively but sensible environment for a Saturday afternoon.
can't really expect it but lack of air con and not even a desk fan in the room - stifling. Service not always as effective and efficient as it was friendly. We had our post-dinner coffee on the terrace "on the house" because the lovely chatty bar manager forgot us after taking our order. Indoor pool area humid and pool too warm for comfort. Showers in rooms (third floor) very poor - we were three adult couples (in one family) and two nights' stay: this means three rooms, not just one unlucky instance of a dribbly shower. I had hoped for an email from the hotel requesting feedback and would have given them constructive feedback, I think my Dad might have completed the paper questionnaire.
Good food in the restaurant. 10 min walk to Brockenhurst and 5 min drive to Lydhurst. Spa and pool were clean. We watched agame of cricket on the grass in front the hotel.
The whole building needs decorating. It looks very worn out and not up to what it has to offer.
The hotel had lots of character, the breakfast was fantastic, everything that you love to eat and more. We dined in the restaurant and the standard of food and service was 5 star. We have booked to go back again.
The room was next to a double door on the landing which banged every time someone went through and kept me awake. Would be better to put a 'closer' on the doors.
We loved the swimming pools, sauna, comfy beds, staff professionalism and the wonderful setting in the heart of the New Forest!
Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, quick efficient service
Room poorly insulated so very noisy from crying children in adjacent room, arial lead not connected very well and kept falling out. Old biscuits left with tea and coffee, poor selection of tea.
