Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
Beautiful, atmospheric medieval city! Tea rooms galore. Lots of boutiques and historic sights to enjoy all within a compact area.
The cathedral is the highlight of course. Their evensong is a must. Highlights of our visit ( besides the cathedral) were the city tours bus, York museum, Fairfax House , Ask restaurant ( in the old city halls) and all the ancient churches. For kids, the Viking experience is brilliant. You get to travel back in time sitting on a moving chair and the sights and sounds of Viking York come to life.

We loved the fact that the city was quite compact but full of history, unusual buildings, markets, pubs, good eateries and lots of shopping. Parking in the city was pricey however there was an excellent Park & Ride service dotted around the city which was good value and ran until late evening.
We loved the Jorvik Museum and the Shambles. We ate at Yakamoz, Rosa's Thai, Rise Brunch - all were lovely and would recommend them. We had a lovely time and would definitely go back as we only scratched the surface

A beautiful city with lots of options in the city centre and the surrounding area. We enjoyed shopping and strolling in the city centre, including sampling coffee shops and restaurants. We also enjoyed shopping at the Designer Outlet on the outskirts of the city. The park and ride system is really easy to use and saves driving into the city itself.

York makes a good destination for a short break, with lots to see and do. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes, plus shops and cultural attractions. It's an easy walking city but navigating around the streets can be a bit tricky at times. The main issue with York is that the centre gets really busy. The best advice is to visit The Shambles and explore the other old town streets early before the crowds arrive.
This is a fabulous hotel. A fascinating and rather unique interior - beautiful wooden panelling, gorgeous stained glass window. The restaurant is gorgeous. I know that a lot of local York folk eat here on a regular basis. Really capable, consistently friendly staff. The rooms are really well appointed - little (but really great) things like literally the most impressive irons I've ever seen (they have HEADLIGHTS?!) - a safe, etc, etc.
Can't recommend enough. 4 star hotel at 3 star prices.
The location in York was ideal for the attractions and shops and the room itself was clean and spacious. Huge TV on the wall and a fantastic shower.
We took advantage of the luggage storage on our last day as we weren't going home till late afternoon which is a great service to supply to guests .
Good selection at breakfast .
I definitely recommend the Hampton by Hilton hotels and try to stay in one wherever I go
Perfect location - easy walk to/from the train station & into York. We stayed in the Roman House part of the hotel in a spacious, modern room. We had breakfast - which was delicious - one morning and drinks in the bar one night, but didn’t have dinner at the hotel. Staff was very nice. All in all it was a great stay - will definitely recommend The Grand to friends traveling to York.
This was a wonderful Bed & Breakfast! I can't say enough good things about it. Our room was lovely and very spacious and everyone on the premises was inviting and so pleasant. Their breakfast was top notch and the location was perfect for exploring all parts of York. I would highly recommend them and hope to be able to return to England someday and book another stay!
The location suited us for convenience. I have slight mobility issues so a hotel close to the city centre was the key factor booking this hotel. The room was fine and breakfast offered plenty of choice. The late night bar was welcome. All staff were friendly and professional. We will certainly stay in this hotel again when we visit York.
We really enjoyed our time at York, and staying at the Galtres Hotel was so handy to everything we wanted to do during our two days there. Our room was so nice, and the clawfoot tub was fun to use. We ate breakfast there two mornings and had dinner there our second night. All of the food was excellent! The staff were all very nice to us!
My mother and l had a fabulous stay in York at The Dean Court Hotel.during the #JVF 2024 in February.
All the staff were friendly,Kind and very professional. Gary our waiter was lovely , humourous and very helpful every evening when we ordered our meals and drinks with him.
The room had a great view looking out over the York Minster.
The room was very spacious, beautiful and comfortable. It is located in York city centre and close to everywhere including the train station. The best part was the spa facility in the hotel, having a good size of swimming pool with jacuzzi. We really enjoyed staying at The Grand York. Also friendly and kind staff. Highly recommended.
Excellent hotel for a 3-night stay in York. The hotel is within walking distance from the city centre. It is located by the river with lovely views. The room was a good size with comfortable beds. We were a family of 2 adults, one teenager and a dog, and had ample space. Staff were friendly. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.
Good location, plenty of buses opposite Hotel, to get into York centre, train station 15 minutes walk away and lovely clean room, pure white soft towels, couldn't fault anything and breakfast was delicious! Lots of choices!! Had a double room on ground floor and would definitely book again!
Stayed the first time because they sponsored my sons Rugby team. Have stayed in two other York hotels but I just love the friendliness and ambiance of the Moxy and its convenience to the Minster and city centre. All the Staff are delightful.
Great location, secure parking a major plus.
normally stay in a hotel when visiting York. but decided to try an apartment. was not disappointed and the extra room was excellent and more relaxing. would highly recommend this property.
Hotel is in excellent location 5 mins from Minster itself and centre of York. Room was large with king size bed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with many choices of cooked items which were cooked to order.
Staff were very friendly. Hotel is fairly close to York city centre (20 minute walk). Street was very quiet and safe. Lots of parking available for cheap. Room met all our expectations with a free small breakfast provided.
Set just outside York centre, this is the perfect location for easy access to York. Facilities were clean and fully working. Breakfast was absolutely fantastic. The bed was huge and overall the room And hotel felt lovely.
Hotel Indigo is always modern and clean, same for the hotel we stayed in York. Nice staff that answered your needs immediately. Easy to access to the main attractons.
Previously we had stayed at Hampton by Hilton in Bath, which was excellent.
The York hotel had similar facilities and was in a good city centre location.
