A charming, thatched country pub, The Trout Inn is located in the village of Bickleigh, on the River Exe.
Score from 129 reviews Wonderful
Nice room with French doors to terrace. Would be lovely in summer. Friendly owner Brian. Fantastic food.
Unbelievably noisy cold water tap. Because the room had french doors there was no ventilation as we could not leave them open being on the ground floor.
great food fantastic service Brian is a fantastic host
hotel very quite but creaking floorboards from room above
Wonderful buildings from the 16th century that offers a warm cosy environment along with heaps of character. Brian, the owner was a gem and could not have been more welcoming and helpful. When my teenage son States that he though the hotel and Brian were great then you have to be impressed. Both my teenage children stated that the Barton Cross was leaps ahead of any modern hotel they had stayed in. They even forgave the weak WI Fi in room.
Nothing to fault for us and can't wait for next visit when my daughter hopefully attends the university
A little gem satisfyingly old fashioned with excellent food
Great location - in the country but only 10 mins from Exeter. Lovely setting and a unique property. Very comfortable, great dining and all the staff were very welcoming.
Excellent wine list and quality of food was superb Staff were excellent
Bed a little worn and bathroom needed refreshing
We had a two day break and my wife fell in love with the place. The room, meals and the staff were excellent.
Very little to dislike. Maybe a little too out of the way for some people.
poor shower (no water pressure)
Ambience and comfort. Really lovely breakfast. Charming owner. Great menu. Good seating in rooms and all common areas. Nice upstairs lounge on landing. Would definitely like to stay again. Also suit business person as place to work at in room
Faultless apart from double room only had one bedside table. In 16th century part wifi kept dropping out inside room. Think walls too thick!
Location, atmosphere, friendliness and most of all, food.
Erratic wi-fi and sometimes what seemed like deliberately slow service. Our towels, which we hung up, kept being taken away and not replaced.
The location- Only a short distance from the village of Stoke Canon with its shop and thriving community-run pub, the Hotel felt peacefully remote. Considering Exeter was only 4 miles away, this was a surprise and the M5, as well as other major roads, was easily accessed. Brian Hamilton, the owner- manager, and his staff were always helpful and considerate. A lift up to the village one day is an example of this kindness which I experienced at The Barton Cross. An unusual and delightful place to stay, whether for a night or for longer.
Rural location but very close to Exeter Very attentive staff - looked after us brilliantly Country charm to the place Excellent food in the restaurant Good relaxed atmosphere Book selection in the room - classic good reads
Beds in the family room could be wider
Food. Staff. Friendly. One of those rare places where one meets all the other guests. Enjoyable stay. Good size room.
The bed. Musty smell which one gets used to. It is to old fashioned and needs a refurbishment. Some may like this though as it does have a charm.
Quaint little place
Could hear the next room snoring all night - so annoying
Just a lovely place to stay and you get excellent service and well looked after
This lovely little hotel was such a lucky find. Everything about it was excellent - the service, the food, the room. Such a quaint building with a lovely garden in a picturesque spot. Lots of nice touches - the homemade canapés before dinner and the lovely homemade petit fours with the coffee. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.
There was nothing not to like.
Nice small family run hotel. Spacious family room. Very quiet location in the countryside near Exeter. Superb restaurant!!! Excellent breakfast.
General ambience and excellent food.
Good food, quiet,comfortable
Only the showers,very low pressure
This is old world charm - nooks and crannies, thatched roofs, hacked wooden beams, fireplaces you could park a car in. We loved the lounge area where we enjoyed a whisky before a memorable five course meal. Our room was spacious and immaculate, and overlooked the charming garden area. This hotel was a highlight of our visit to Devon and Cornwall. We would have stayed extra days had we been able to adjust our schedule.
The staff were friendly ,polite and helpful. The food in the restaurant was of good quality ,well presented and tasty.
Very old fashioned, as if had not been decorated or the decoration considered since the 70s. Beds were extraordinarily old and uncomfortable, very poor value for money for the accomodation. A bit odd. Could really do with a visit from Alex Polizzi the Hotel Inspector.
Location Staff Atmosphere
Wifi not picked up in room
Old world rustic charm with all the mod cons. Food and service excellent
Not being told that there was a bar. Wi fi intermittent.
