One thing you should know, although it's clear if you look at the location, is that the rail-track runs close to hotel and there is a local service which runs every 30-40 mins. Unfortunately, as there is an unmanned crossing just down from the hotel, it does have to toot each time! As its a local service, it doesn't run at night, and I didn't find it that distracting as I was mostly out of the room, but people looking for a very quiet location should be aware of this before they book. That said, no other noise at all.
The room was just as lovely as it looked on the website ( I stayed in the Old Library); the bathroom , which is not shown, is of adequate size, with a large walk-in shower, toiletries and fluffy bathrobes/slippers, beautifully decorated. The breakfast, as others have said was really good and served just how and when I requested.
The fireplace shown in the picture was not active when I visited, but Margaret told me a man was coming in the next few days to open up the chimney -so you will shortly have the luxury of a real fire in the bedroom. I would definitely stay here again ( and with a fire it will definitely hit 5 points)
Cartmel down the road is a lovely place to visits, and it is of course the home to L'enclume - I wish I'd realised in time to book a meal there!
