Excellent,
Score from 194 reviews
“ We loved Bear Crickhowell and didn't want to leave. Fantastic staff ,very friendly . Great pub to sit around the fire and talk to the locals. Breakfast was just like your mother cooked for you on a cold winters morning to keep you going for the whole day. Would love to come back another time. ”

In Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons, The Bear dates back to 1432. Expect a welcoming atmosphere, old world charm and good food. Awarded Inn of the Year 2010 by the Good Pub Guide. The Bear has original features, such as a cobbled forecourt, with an old archway leading to an inner courtyard. Rooms also have an historic feel, but with modern facilities like free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. The restaurant menu often changes to suit the local ingredients available. The award-winning food is served in cozy surroundings, with open log fires or fine fresh spring flowers. The restaurant is popular, so reservations are recommended. The popular bar at The Bear has a low-beamed ceiling, with a winter log fire and many antiques. It has twice won the 'Best Pub in Britain' award. A number of real ales are served, along with vintage wines. Hotel Rooms: 34, Hotel Chain: Recommended Hotels. The location was perfect for the Brecon beacons, good food, cosy atmosphere in the pub. Our room could do with an update in decoration, mattress a little too hard.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful, we arrived with no table booked in the restaurant and an event on, but somehow they managed to find us a table to eat at for 7.30. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you. nothing

Lovely pub atmosphere with excellent food and good reasonable wines, and very good real ale. Very friendly helpful staff and relaxed atmosphere. Hope to go back soon. TV was a bit old! This didn't worry us though as the rest was so good, and you don't go to a place like this to watch tv in your bedroom!

When I realised my room only had a shower, I went to ask the receptionist if I could have a room with a bathtub. She not only found me a room in the main hotel with a bathtub, she actually gave me one with a jacuzzi! I'm sure this was an upgrade but at no point did she make the point or charge me more. I was delighted of course!

Bar/restaurant was lovely with good food/ale and ambiance. A beautiful old Inn My room was very dated (R23) with poor decoration and broken/shabby fixtures and fittings. This room really needs modernising

The location and the old world charm and friendliness of staff Internet is poor as is television reception but that could be that Crickhowell is a black spot, rather than the fault of the hotel.

Fantastic location, beautiful old style building with warm feeling and friendly staff. Two single beds pushed together do not make a comfortable double bed in my opinion. Way too soft. Now have bad back ache.

Resturant facilities Staff Room comfort level High noise level in the courtyard area (where rooms are) until 2400 and again starting at 0630 in the morning. This noise from vehicles, hotel staff, delivery vehicles, contractors, kitchen door and windows open. Bar smokers in the courtyard. Dogs barking

The food is excellent. The staff were very attentive. We booked a superior room. I didn't think the room was superior. When I complained to the manager he reduced our room rate to standard. The decor is tired and in need of refurbishment. £115 a night too much to pay for mediocrity.

This is the 4th time we have stayed at the Bear and have enjoyed every trip. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is clean and well run. The evening meal was disappointing, for the standard of the hotel we thought the food would have been better. It tasted like packet food.
