The staff were amazing. So friendly and helpful. It was my husbands 30th birthday and they upgraded our room for free. The food was beyond belief delicious and a better location doesn't exist! Would certainly stay again. One night away felt like a week to us. So relaxed.
The food prices are high so not a cheap treat but once you taste their food you understand why.
People were charming and attentive Food Public rooms service
Plumbing: shower's only temperature was scalding, corridors overheated and radiators obviously wouldn't turn off Freeview didn't work first day weak wifi not much for vegetatians
Very accomodating with the dogs. Nearby Rodborough Common great for a walk.
The location on Rodborough Common is excellent. The staff are friendly and the place looks well cared for.
I realise that there are extra costs involved over Christmas, but I think the charges were excessive for this level of service and accommodation.
Location overlooking the common. Very friendly service. Excellent breakfast and wide choice. All mod cons in the hotel. Lots of character in the many rooms
Room was slightly expensive but as it was Boxing day it was probably to be expected/
The hospitality and friendliness of the staff.
The erratic local bus service.
Beautiful area and picturesque countryside
Too many steps I am disabled
There are several options to have small meetings within the hotel - various rooms are available although it does tend to get rather loud in the evenings. Good location for the business I had to do in the local area.
We ended up having to stay in the annex which means a long trek and having to go outdoors to get to the restaurant etc. The food was really bad - I was surprised because it was actually quite good when we stayed there last year. Perhaps the chef was on vacation or something but the scallops we had at dinner were basically inedible. We ended up eating elsewhere during our stay which we had no planned on having to do.
Excellent hotel. The staff were most helpful. Lovely cosy bar and lounge and the breakfast was really good.
Lot of refurbishment going on but that will soon be finished I'm sure.
Room very comfortable and a fabulous bathroom with 'waterfall' shower. All the facilities we needed. Full English breakfast set us up for the day
Staff were brilliant. Knowledgable helpful and friendly. Good was great, local beer was fab. Wine warehouse on site was excellent.
Nothing to mention!
Helpful friendly staff, plus the bonus of half price fizz on a Friday. Hotel is full of character, including two stuffed bears.
The room was clean, warm and welcoming. The breakfast was lovely, good value for money.
The wifi connection on my iPad kept dropping out which was frustrating at times. Some of the staff were not as welcoming as I thought they should be.
the bar staff
The staff were very prompt at dealing with issues with our room. They were very friendly and informative. I also liked the wine merchant located on site. We bought some lovely wine.
I was very disappointed with my lamb dinner. I was offered a complimentary desert which I feel was not adequate.
Beautiful old building with any additions really in keeping with the original architecture - excellent food
I stayed in a single room which was very overpriced in comparison with two friends which stayed in a double room in a newer section of the hotel, they also had slippers and hot water - the latter I would have preferred! Staff responses to complaints were reasonable and most issues were resolved although I felt a little patronised when talking to the receptionist about them. There were not forthcoming with any discounts
the location the cleanliness the food the staff the room was fantastic
the bedroom was too warm
If there is a wedding on during your stay, expect every public area to be filled with wedding guests. This meant that we were unable to sit in the bar and have a drink after returning from seeing friends. We were asked whether we minded staying in a room that was relatively close to the main function room (number 15) which we didn't, however we think it must have been located above the kitchen as from about 7am all we could smell was toast and the room became uncomfortably warm.
Friendly pub like atmosphere. Good dining facilities
Room too hot at night despite radiators turned off.
Beautiful hotel with character and great ambiance. Very comfortable bedrooms. Lovely log fires. Excellent food and service.
Second night the bedroom window wouldn't stay closed as the catch was broken and the window banged all night which kept me awake.
Location, style, decor, food and staff and the cows!!!
Pillows needed to have a choice if pos as they were down pillows which felt like we were sleeping on the mattress. For this reason our sleep wasn't great, however we understand that's down to personal choice.
We first met at The Bear 27 years ago and this year we returned to celebrate 25 years of marriage. Gorgeous 4-poster bed Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting Restaurant serves good food Staff are very helpful and friendly
Absolutely nothing to dislike
Location, friendly bar staff
Unhelpful reception staff, extremely small helpings at dinner
