The relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff help to make the Bear an ideal place for the elderly but you do need a car to get there.

Walks in the close proximity countryside. Service at breakfast was a bit inadequate. No salt or marmalade on the table. Hot breakfast course was delivered before we had finished our cereal.

The first room we were allocated was very small, however, as this was an 'offer' we did not complain. There were no radiators in the room to turn off, the heat apparently coming from pipes around us. The heat was unbearable during the night. We could not sleep and reported this to reception who upgraded us to another room. It was still very hot at night but we could open the window as we were not listening to traffic all night. The first room was 23, the second room was 26. We have stayed at the hotel in the past and would certainly book in again if there was an offer. We visit this area regularly to visit our family. Maggie Collorick. Sorry used the wrong box. We like the Bear because it is in a good location, the building is beautiful and the food excellent. Staff are helpful and friendly.

Relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Pleasant staff. Good food. Beautiful location. The hotel has many good features and overall we were very pleased with our stay there and will visit again. However, the rooms need checking for minor repairs - E.G. drawers that won't close properly, amazingly squeaky toilet seat

We've known the Bear for many years and often had good food and drink there but this was the first time we've stayed and found it friendly and welcoming and much improved. . and our room was lovely, comfortable and well furnished with a view down the valley. It was a special occasion for a group of friends and the staff ensured it was special for us. Thank you.. The Toast at breakfast!!! Cheap white bread was a bit of a let down!

Welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, well presented stylish hotel and bedroom. Good evening pub meal and generous breakfast. Fantastic setting. Would definitely visit again. Room a little hot at night and mattress a bit unconfortable (could feel the springs)

Lovely location - quiet room - thought the dining room looked too formal for us so we had a meal in the bar and it was delicious

Went out of their way to deal with food allergies. Noise of the fan in the bathroom, hated to have to turn on the light since that turned on the fan as well.

The four-poster room we stayed in was luxurious, comfortable and ultra- clean, and being on the second floor, the views were great. The location of the hotel - on top of the 'plateau' that is Rodborough Common - is truly spectacular; a short walk offered some fabulous views as far as Wales to the west. We were disappointed the restaurant was full, but the bar food was good - even if the bar on a Friday night was a bit noisy. I have no complaints about the Bear of Rodborough hotel, but just need to mention that the hotel had no record of our booking (made a few weeks earlier via booking.com - and thankfully we had documentary proof), which could have been awkward but the professional way the desk manager dealt with it .... and the fact that we ended up in a four- poster room, as a superior standard room was clearly all that was available at short notice.

Baronial style, breakfast, room was fine (good mattress), bathroom also - don't renovate-out the fabulous nostalgic turquoise tiles in the annexe building! Menu art and original wall art were a bonus - The spectacular view over Woodchester and towards the Severn is now sadly obscured by untamed trees - Leylandii even - which is a great pity. I remember the view especially (from childhood in '50s onwards) as being The Bear Inn's prime feature. Shame 50p is charged for a postcard of the pleasant menu picture - this seemed mean at £86 a night. (compare Egypt Mill, Nailsworth). Re date below: it was actually the night of 18th August not 21st.

Very nice staff and the breakfast was excellent. The room we stayed in I would not class as executive. Rather noisy on the nights when wedding parties are booked in.

The hotel was undergoing alterations and we only stayed one night for Bed and Breakfast. We found the bedside lighting and switches very well placed, good decoration, comfortable beds, good mirror and dressing table, easy chairs and good tea selection. Well equipped bathroom with hooks on doors, shelf space, good shower, flannels provided, good lighting and ventilation. Good fresh fruit and juices, good selection of cooked breakfast. Well designed gardens. Would certainly recommend it and will come again.

Staying at the bear renewed my faith in English country hotels. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and will definitely return, probably bringing family or friends. Interestingly, the adherence to the ingredients mentioned in the menus was a little excentric, but it didn't matter as the food was delicious. Well done, The Bear of Rodborough.

Location, beautiful common rooms, nice breakfasts, attentive staff, quick response to concerns. Noisy on Saturday night due to party. Unable to use wardrobe in room 5 as open fire on floor below, resulting in v strong smell of woodsmoke in wardrobe area.

We have been coming on and off for many years and were delighted with the makeover since the new owners took over. Just what was needed. Excellent food and pleasant staff. Shame 90% of the staff are foreign but they were good. Rather hard bed ( Room 41) If we were being picky we would say that the Dining Room service was a bit too keen- meaning plates were removed as soon as the last mouthful had gone down and the next course appeared immediately. A little more breathing space between courses would be better.

We liked all the bear hotels location, Staff. A very welcoming stay Bar food : for example Ordered "homemade beefburgers" x 3 at £10.50 per head, beefburgers had very little meat taste mainly breadcrumbs ? My wife ordered the grilled chicken salad with blue cheese sauce: the chicken was lumps of pre cooked chicken not char grilled the blue cheese sauce was so overpowering my wife was unable to eat the dish No care was taken in the presentation, my wife descibed it as a bowl of slop.MEALS Also exspensive.
