Staff were absolutely fantastic...helpful, friendly and always smiling. The hotel is perfectly located, very easy stroll into town or into the countryside. Room was delightful and dinner delicious. Nothing. Our short stay was perfect and we will be back!

The staff and venue suits me as I have 2 clients close by alk (who I know have now moved but I still meet 1 of the Managers around Hungerford) plus a client in Newbury but I prefer to stay in Hugerford and the The Bear. I feel I am always made to feel very welcome and love the fact the staff know me and treat me well. Privacy is important to me (as have had a previous bad experience) so the fact I can hide away safely and get my work done at the same time works really well for me. Hi Guys, I stay there a lot and lovely Lee always sorts me a good room. Was a bit dissapointed this time however as I booked on line and got a deal on executive room and like to stay in either room 4 inside or the large room updstairs on Bear Island. I asked for Bear Island but due to a "fault" in the upstairs room was put in the room downstairs, this was very small and very noisy. So didnt enjoy the stay as I usually do.

The ambience with everthing close to hand. All the staff we met were welcoming and helpful and gave an expression of enjoying their employment, which is indicative of good management. We had a room adjacent to the main hotel which would not have been warm in cold weather. Similarly, the temperature in the bar in the early part of the evening was only just acceptable.

We had a comfortable room in the courtyard. It was a bit creaky due to the people above us in what is a very old building - creaking floorboards. Our meal in the bar was very good value - smae menu as the restaurant.

We liked the fact that The Bear is not part of a big group and thus has an individual character of its own. Atmosphere is very relaxed and staff very pleasant and friendly. We really appreciated being switched to a quiet room for our second night as the traffic kept us awake much of our first night. Meals are rather expensive and only limited choice for vegetarians. The decor in the bar/restaurant is very functional and it lacks the character of the rest of the hotel.

I knew the hotel as it was and liked it, but I did also like the re-modernisation. Room 9 was a delight, spacious, comfortable, huge bed, lovely bathroom. Faced the main road, but awoke to a Saturday morning so not too bad for traffic. Position near the river very pleasant, also Hungerford is not far off motorway, handy. It is a very historic hotel, so read up before setting off, makes the stay more interesting. Got a bargain on price so that's the main reason I stayed here. Manager must not be wanting to sell his San Miguel. £4.00 a pint, I bought one without being made aware of price then took off to a pub! Breakfast at £15.00 so didn't bother, don't think many did. I thought everyone understood we are in an era of severe austerity.

Convenient for the function we were attending. Free parking. Our balcony was filthy. We had to clean the chairs before we could sit on them. Cigarette ends on the wooden floor. Bedroom walls paper-thin. No biscuits provided with our coffee/tea.

Floor tiles loose in bathroom. Paint peeling off radiator in bathroom. Expected perhaps in cheaper hotel. One way system in car park means you exit onto the main road immediately adjacent to hotel. Difficult to see if the road is clear to the right. Reversal of the one way system would ease this problem, as the car park exit would then be well away from the hotel building. In answer to the next question (which does not allow a non-committal answer), I'm unsure whether I would recommend this hotel.

My party of three couples were accomodated with a room in which to change upon our early arrival without any fuss. The receptionist was extremely courteous and helpful which was pleasing because we had a tight schedule, in order to catch a train to Newbury Racecourse. We didnt return to the hotel until after midnight but the night receptionist completed the remaining booking without much fuss. Liked the hotel and will definately be going back with friends to explore Hungerford. Unfortunately my friends and I were witness to a very inappropriate standard of behaviour of your kitchen staff while we were sat in the garden area enjoying coffee on Sunday morning. I do not wish to complain but a very very loud and vocal row with much use of obscene language occurred between what I believe were kitchen staff which caused the women in my group some distress. It was most unpleasant and completely unacceptable to expose guests to such conduct.

Loved staying in Rm 4. It was large and luxurious, with comfy beds and a great bathroom. We ate at the bar one evening and the food was very good, although a little over priced. It was a bit of a shock moving from Rm 4 to Rm 39! The second room was fine, it was just very different which I guess was reflected in the price. When I booked the room, there was no clear description of what kind of room was being chosen, and I'm guessing the hotel keep the very best rooms for their own bookings rather than using booking.com.
