This charming family-run inn has an attractive and tranquil setting in the middle of the rolling Marlborough Downs, with great access to the region’s major road network.
Score from 162 reviews Excellent
Welcoming staff and the room was clean and well presented. Room was in an attached block with an unusual floor to ceiling window, looking onto a courtyard. There was plenty of room to sit and a good sized TV screen. The bathroom was warm and and there was plenty of hot water to enjoy a soak in the deep bath. Good breakfast too!
Pleasant spacious bedroom
Far too hot on arrival - all radiators were on full blast - had to open windows (in mid-winter!)
Food and staff were great
Traffic was a bit noisy
I arrived after eight hours on the road and was very pleasantly surprised by the ambiance in the hotel. Relaxed, comfortable and amiable, it was just what I needed to prepare for the next day. Good food - particularly liked the complimentary pudding and the staff were attentive without being pushy.
Road noise was very intrusive early morning, but unless they triple glaze the windows there's probably not much that they can do about that.
The bed was like something out of the Princess and the Pea , it was so high but lovely and comfy. Nice welcome on arrival. Staff polite and breakfast was plentiful , Full English , toast , tea or coffee , cereals , pastries & yoghurts.
No one asked if we wanted to store our luggage as we checked in early we left out case in the car till we returned , no big deal but every little helps :)
All very good.
Looked after well by staff Great food Great room Love Bear Island Definitely be going back
Location is ideal for Hungerford
Very very basic Floors creaked, very noisy Rooms very poor quality TV technology 20 years old and very poor quality Had to wait 20 mins for breakfast as only one waitress who was brave enough to talk to Customers Will not be returning
Staff were friendly restaurant good value for money
The cleanliness could of been better especially for the price you are paying.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Good value for money. In the perfect place for us.
The connecting door between our room and the one next to it needs to be replaced with a more soundproof one!
Spacious room, view of river, quiet, comfy bed, friendly service, good breakfast
Pleasant historic place to stay. Smart décor. Close to public transport. Country / canal walks etc.
Cooked breakfast quite good but the rest poor. toiletries very poor . Open wardrobe untidy. Constant humming noise- machinery - extractor ? Traffic not a real problem.
Staff very helpful
Excessive noise from room above Carpet not clean Breakfast poor
Very comfortable , excellent spacious room
The friendly and efficient welcome
The bathroom was OK but just needed that extra bit of cleaning.
New reception & Bar area, clean, quiet room, comfy bed & bedding. much more economical to stay here now, breakfast a sensible price too
television setup confusing - 2 remotes to operate! No shampoo in bathroom Would have preferred a bath rather than shower Outside steps to rooms in courtyard need attention, cleaning, re-decorating, possibly better slip proofing
It appeared that due to lack of staff, although those present were working hard, we still had to wait 40 minutes for a cooked breakfast, which when it arrived looked and tasted as if waiting on kitchen pass for a long time
Old world charm, comfortable bed and friendly staff
One bedside light not working and shade broken. Lack of shampoo and conditioner. Rather poor service at breakfast as we had to ask for our tea and toast three times.
Enjoyed stay very much
Only 1 problem - rather a lot of noise early in the morning.
Breakfast was lovely
Rooms in the annex were small and the carpet feels almost sticky. Not what I was expecting. We were expecting to stay in the old part of the hotel, so possibly our own fault for not understanding the room that we had booked.
Room was OK with nice view and clean.
Reception was not always manned. We had to keep ringing the bell on the counter to get service. There was only one towel in room when we arrived. Poor bar staff served wine in a dirty glass then, when we complained, he simply poured the wine from the dirty glass into another glass. Food menu choices very basic and food itself unexceptional. Overall, no better than a standard chain-style pub and in some ways, worse. We won't be coming again!
Room poorly appointed, dirty carpets, single glazed leaky and drafty windows, noisy floorboards in room above which meant that every time someone moved the noise was amplified into the room below. Slow service in dining room, they seemed to concentrate on bar meals as a priority and eventually when food arrived it was cold and greasy. Wedding reception on at the same time and noise booming into adjacent rooms, glad to get out of the place overpriced for what it offers.
Everything really, great breakfast
Good selection of dinner menu & breakfast.
