Less than a mile from York’s historic centre, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are good-value rooms and a restaurant and bar.

Hospitality, breakfasts. The beds were clean and comfy. Plenty of hot water for baths etc.
Room 7, needs bathroom refurb. The window frames in all of our rooms were dirty and there was cobwebs and dust on lights and shades.
Very nice well run hotel. Thanks Jonmac tyres.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Large room and very clean.
Staff and location
everything - staff, room, breakfast, location, car parking very useful, super comfy beds, cant fault anything
nothing at all!
Enjoyed our stay at the hotel, The room was very nice and it had an iron/board, hair dryer and refreshments. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant. We enjoyed our breakfast that had a great deal of choice. Location was only 20 minutes walk to the centre of York.
Very close to walk into York, garden lovely and some of the staff very helpful. Room was clean and bright and comfortable.
Needs to be painted and cleaned in all reception areas, had cobwebs and dead flies on some of the curtains.
It is in a great location, the staff were all friendly and helpful and the room was very clean and spacious, and cant fault the breakfast. would recommend and stay again.
Room too small and noisy.
Friendly staff, nice room and good breakfast. Beer garden to relax when the weather is fitting, as was the case for us. Many thanks.
location easy to find. Parking good. Outdoor space, garden at rear with plenty of seating to sit and relax. Room good size. Evening meal delicious, breakfast great choice.
The staff were friendly but needed to multi-task leaving things undone.
There were varied jobs performed by the same staff, which meant the reception was frequently unmanned, with the receptionist operating as waiter, barman and cook. The hotel was very dated and not acceptable for the prices charged
We had to request an early breakfast, as they don't usually start until 8am We were given a family room which could sleep 5, not as cosy as the double we had booked
Friendly staff, spotless, comfortable well equipped bedroom, good breakfast, good location, excellent value.
This is a comfortable, friendly hotel, in a quiet area, yet only 10-15 mins walk from the City centre. The food was good and the beds were comfortable which gave us a good nights rest.
A more powerful shower would be an improvement.
We enjoyed our stay. The staff were welcoming and friendly. A good value hotel especially on race days. Would stay again.
Breakfast; Food was very tasty
Bed not comfortable
Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast.
Three flights of stairs to room. Room very warm - could do with a fan!
Convenience to York-Sheffield Tour de France route Furniture in room faily new and bedding and sheets acceptable Parking OK Hanging baskets outside nice Some staff helpful Full Monty Breakfast good (except on Sunday
Man on recepition bit of a joker (kidded us that he did not have a booking for us -Yorkshire humour I suppose but not funny after a long journey.) We had requested sheets and blankets rather than a duvet and this was not done on arrival although dealt with quickly Noisy room on front with road traffic nearby - secondary double glazing not very effective so disturbed night Flood lights lit up window to room until midnight (curtains thin) hot on first night - promsed fan for next night and this never materialised Breakfast in booklet said 8-10am. On Sunday this did not start till 8:30 but no one told us. Service on Sunday was poor with orders not being taken in order of people coming into breakfast. Took 45 minutes before breakfast was cooked and sausages were cool. Lateness of breakfast meant we missed the start of Le Tour procession (the sole purpose of staying in York Shower room door did not shut properly. Shower hose was dirty and black bits came of during use. cleaned by us on first night. Window dirty and net curtain kept falling down - held up by pipe clips Hotel generally looking tired. Very expensive at £405 for a three night stay (cashing in on Tour de France excessively) Rooms either side of the saturday not fully booked and web site suggested these would be much cheaper It seemed despite extra effort was made to extract the fmaximum on the days of Le tour, no effort was made to accommodate the event inpractice - e.g by early breakfast
On arrival the entrance area was cluttered with several table tops - safety hazard if not worse. No one was at the reception desk, but a chair was occupied by a dog. When someone finally arrived his manner was brusk and quite rude - where was the warm welcome they so proudly advertise? The front desk was very untidy. When handed our key we had to find our own way to the room, which as a family room still felt cluttered with very dated and worn furniture. Breakfast when it eventually arrived was poor. There were table cloths piled up from the previous evening's event. Tables were moved as we ate breakfast instead of giving guests the attention! There seemed to be too few staff to make sure guests needs were being met. No one seemed to have the ability or skills or in fact be bothered to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Will not stay at this hotel again!
Bed was comfy, room fairly spacious and the hair dryer worked (always a bonus!!)
When we first arrived the en suite bathroom smelt slightly
A pet friendly hotel with excellent parking. In close proximity of the City centre if using the riverside walk. Friendly and attentive staff and a great breakfast.
Nothing. Staff pleasant
Room tiny, no phone although phone was in room.... Not connected. Bed against wall. Perhaps we should have looked at other rooms but appeared to be ok from photo etc. Very disappointed. Spoilt our trip to York.
Spacious rooms. Ironing board and iron in the room. We were helped upstairs with our bags by staff.
Unfriendly owners. Over priced for what it is. Cups had lipstick stains on. Given the price £86 per night the quality of breakfast products were not up to scratch.
Loved all the staff. They were very helpful and nothing was too much bother...
