Very good,
Score from 97 reviews
In the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, this charming 18th-century hotel has picturesque gardens in over an acre of its own grounds. There is free Wi-Fi and free parking. The Bell Hotel has a traditional, oak-beamed restaurant, offering fine cuisine in cozy surroundings. During the summer there is a patio area, in addition to a relaxing lounge with winter log fires. There is a separate wing at The Bell, which has a small number of quiet bedrooms overlooking the orchard gardens. These rooms were refurbished in 2010 and have a modern decor. The Bell Hotel is less than a 10 minute walk from Charlbury Train Station, where trains reach Oxford in 20 minutes. There are also direct trains to London Paddington. The Bell is also 7 miles from Woodstock, which was the birthplace of Winston Churchill and is home to Blenheim Palace. Location in the heart of a Cotswold village was good. The accommodation block separate from the hotel and with good access to car-park is a bonus. Obviously an older establishment brought up to date, but more positively than others. The usual stairs and passageways, can't have it both ways!

Against the background of the Cotswolds and with a history going back to 1700, the accommodation was very comfortable and lacked for nothing with the added benefit of being unusual and quirky. The food was beyond excellent and was served with exquisite and artistic flair and can only be described as 'haute cuisine' of the best calibre. The service was friendly and flexible...nothing was too much trouble...and mine host was the most delightful french lady...the whole thing was formidable!

Staff very friendly. Very nice decor, modern, clean, and comfy lounge area and bar. Good place to explore area around it, such as Blenheim Palace. Good place to go walking lots of countryside and not much traffic to worry about. Quiet location too. The room was ok, but due to age of the property floor in room was uneven, which wasnt bad when walking on it but the bed was at an angle and it felt like you would fall out. One velux window had a gap below it, which you could see the outside through, and the wind came in. There was no way of using phone for reception it didnt work, and had to go back to the bar to ask for anything. When we got there the reception was closed and had to wait for the one member of staff to finish at the bar to check in. Showerhead needed descaling, radiators in room didnt come on so room cold ( although they did provide an electric heater to use. ) Food wise, expensive, and not much of a menu especially for children, we went into Chipping Norton ( not far ) and ate cheaper. Drinks also pricey ( a pint of Guiness and Latte £6.90! ) Brekfast was nice and hot, but again not much choice a "full english" was one sausage, one bacon rasher, a tomato and a mushroom. Toast was as thin as paper, this could all be improved on. This however was metioned to the owners who gave us a reduction in the cost of staying. If they pick up on these things this would be a great place to stay, rather than an all right one.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast good. Location great. Poor nights sleep due to mattress and thin pillows. Slight scrimping on breakfast - white processed toast.

The double room was recently & tastefully furnished, clean and in good condition Not much grassy garden space to rear for our young son to run around in but not a deal breaker (it is a pub/inn not a playground after all!)

the staff were very welcoming. The food was excellent. seemed very popular with the locals. Although we didn't take our children it was child friendly. The music that came up from a speaker in the ceiling of the bar downstairs, it was very loud in our room. It was ok to start with but after a few hours of listening to the thump over our tv at night time it became very annoying.

After we navigated the one-way system we arrived at The Bell - which looks just as good as the photos. Our room more than fulfilled our expectations having been modernised very stylishly + upmarket toiletries etc. However, the best thing about The Bell was the Super-Helpful Staff - from the owners directions for our visit + treks in the area, to the staff in the Bar! Not for the elderly with lots of luggage - no lift.

Beautifully decorated rooms, very polite staff and situated in a lovely village. Food was also very good. Ceiling mounted speakers meant that when music was put on for breakfast it travelled into the room and woke us up.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was a bit tired and in need of freshening up. No wifi. I chose it because of location, but the price of b&b was on the high side for such limited facilities.

Even though this booking was for Xmas Day the reception was very friendly and their was a flexible approach to breakfast on Boxing Day morning. The room was very spacious, immaculately prepared and a real treat to come back to after a hectic family day.

The Bell Hotel lived up to all of the previous reviews we had read and is without doubt one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in. The room was incredible and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Very quintessentially Cotswolds. We will be going back next year.

“I loved everything about The Red Lion. The staff were amazingly friendly towards me and my dog who was made to feel as welcome as I was! Food was excellent and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Very cute cosy rooms and very nice bathrooms. I was booked in to stay for one evening but ended up staying two! Hoping to go back again in January. Felt like one of the locals, who were so so friendly.” Jo, Maidstone |
