Not very much about the hotel was good apart from them allowing dogs to stay and go into the bar. The location is good as less than 2 miles from the motorway. The room was small, not very clean, the shower cubicle was tiny, the cupboard was broken and there was a constant smell of smoke from the courtyard. The whole hotel is very old fashioned and shabby. The parking was not very good.

Relaxed, informal, dog friendly welcome. Comfortable, well equipped room. Friendly, accommodating staff. Period charm. Some public areas would benefit from some decoration.

Friendly, helpful housekeeper Location People They were kind to my little dogs They left me alone to make my own plans and respected my privacy Loved the area and visited Grey Mare's Tail and St Mary's Loch. People of Moffat very friendly and I enjoyed visiting the few shops there are on the high street Very small room Basic amenities Lack of front of house staff - no-one to greet me on arrival had to find man behind the bar, who was friendly and knew my name (it was off season) Breakfast was awful but Landlady did deduct payment Noise from disco but landlady did offer to change my room to a quieter one but I was settled in little room by then

It was a roof over our heads that is all Most things, bar that plays music until 2am which is 20 yards from your room, then the drunk people hung around for an hour yelling and screaming., Church bells that then wake you at 6am. room lacking: -cleanliness, dust in the coffee mugs, on and behind every surface. -bathroom taps did not turn off and shower dripped all the time. -staff responding at the music and no sleep with a laugh. -breakfast was completely deep-fried and overall inedible. -curtains thin and let any light in -half of the tv channels worked after finding signal basically everything, 2 nights of hell. we only stayed the second night due to the fact the staff told us the music would not be loud. loud music went until 11pm then the drunk people hung around for an hour yelling and screaming. this was after a 20hr day the day before and 4hrs of broken sleep my question is: are they a night club or hotel as they cannot be both!! they still found it fine to take our money. if I ran booking.com I would seriously think about removing this listing! feel free to contact me if you wish. regards William lancaster

Staff made everyone feel at ease even the locals took you into the company and created a friendly atmosphere. Although the lounge needs upgrading, the place was so quaint especially with it having history in the form of Robbie Burns and Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd having used it as their local. This said, the place was very clean, and the rooms were comfortable. The food, well, this was probably the best I have tasted and the menu contained everything you could want. The hotel is only 2 miles from the motorway. Sll in all I would go back. The ripped chairs in the lounge, and the lounge bar shut early so you had to go to the railway bar owned by the hotel but it was noisier, but these are minor details, because the good outweighed the bad.

Rooms are very nice. Shower fantastic. Food excellent - the haggis fritters are to die for! Breakfast amazing! Ripped seats in bar/lounge badly need repairing. Canine welcoming committee/door security a bit over the top. Anyone nervous of dogs (we're not) probably won't appreciate the the zero tolerance approach of the Jack Russels. The Rottweiler's a big softie by the way.

I stayed one night at the Black Bull in Moffat on the way to visit family in Inverness. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There are no real airs and graces (which I like) and it is very informal. I liked it enough to stay 2 nights later on the way back from Inverness to Sheffield! Very laid back and can be a bit noisy in the Railway Bar, though the staff and customers are very friendly!
