I stayed here before is a double room on the 2nd floor and the room was quite reasonable but this time I had a thord floor single room. The carpet was filthy, the curtains dirty and torn, the TV didn't work properly.
Location and parking
The hotel is worn out. The windows did not fit and with single glazing on to a busy road the room was noisy. The shower did not work as there was a leak. In places there were no carpets and those that there were there were very worn.It was just so run down. It needs a makeover.
breakfast was OK bed was clean position ideal for town centre on foot car parking cheap wi fi easily accessible and worked
TV didn't work Shower dripped Carpets worn through sliding door on wardrobe not fixed properly Decor old fashioned Fabric on divan base torn Sleep difficult because lack of air with window open traffic too noisy. Lighting in room very poor had to remove shade to read
really friendly lady at reception quiet room breakfast (booked separate) nice traditional english hotel
to warm in the room quite expensive for the size of room
The hotel address is Trumpington Street. The car park is on Fen Causeway not on Trumpington Street. A telephone call to the hotel enquiring about how to find the car park did not help much. It would be helpfull if the staff at reception knew where the car park is.
Amazing breakfast! Beds were comfortable and everything worked and was clean.
The tiny room. Staff were quite abrupt with me about an early check-in but actually sorted it out for me in the end.
Friendly staff, breakfast was good, room good
The noise of disruptive wedding guests on our floor. Not the Hotel's fault though
Location and ambience
Bedroom decor needed a refresh
hot room, poor wifi and poor facilities
Good location with on site parking.
WiFi sporadic. Bacon rock hard. Fire doors banged al evening.
Have stayed here quite a few times over the last 7 years. Recently the attitude of the staff has considerably improved .. everyone seems helpful, friendly and efficient. Small lounge area great for meeting up with friends & family. Car park !!
I could not fault the housekeeping ..very clean bathroom & spotless linen however the décor in our most recent room was extremely tatty, stained & ripped wallpaper, scuffed furniture, ragged curtains. We know the benefits of this hotel it would be great if money is invested in improvements before our next visit which may not be for a few years. Don't expect a great view outside but 10 minutes down the road you can be in the Botanic Garden or the Fitzwilliam museum.
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel, however when I checked out of my room the next morning the receptionist told me that i would have to pay £8 for the car park, I wasn't made aware of this when I checked into the hotel, and as I had a friend with me, we had two cars between us which would have ment we would have to pay £16 for the car park on top of our bill to stay at the hotel for the evening, another guest informed us that we didn't have to pay the car park charge, so when reporting back to the hotel receptionist to tell her we were not prepared to pay the extra £16 she was very rude to us & it then caused a fuss between the other guests in the queue trying to check out. I found the receptionist very unprofessional and I'm now not sure if I would recommend staying at this hotel again due to the rudeness of the hotel staff.
Easy acces with parking Good location in town
Bathroom tired Water in shower really slow Bed used to be comfortable, not anymore. It was going down really badly in the middle. I am glad I don't have back problem. Booked for 2, but didn't know we had to share a towel before to find the second one in the wardrobe. Had a word at reception at checking out but only the receptionist apologise. Decor and furniture need refurbishment.
The breakfast was good.
There was no shower certain, so I had to ask for one at reception and they installed it while I ate breakfast. I wasn't advised in advance that car parking would cost extra. The wind noise kept me awake, we had one of the attic rooms and it was a windy night.
The room was very dated with patches of threadbare carpet and the bathroom flooring was way beyond cleaning! !!!! To top off a disappointing stay a charge of £8 per night was sprung on us upon departure. Dont be fooled by the Royal in the name it is far from being just that. One to avoid.
The hotel was generally very poor
situtaion to the town and good bus service.
the ambience of the hotel.
old fashioned hotel
Electric fan in the room.
Difficult to find the car park from the main road - we had to go round twice.
The location is superb and the staff were friendly and professional.
The hotel room was sub standard and obviously hasn't been touched for circa 15 years.
Hotel a bit shabby. Room was incredibly hot.
The breakfast was excellent. The bar was open 24 hours. There was a lift to the upper floors. The hotel has history and wasin the middle of the college community near the Fitz so not right in the thick of things which was a nice mix. Parking although not free was reasonable at 8 pounds per night. Bed was comfortable and room was spacious enough and at half the price of the Doubletree was worth the slightly longer walk to things like Kings and Queens.
Housekeeping was haphazard with used towels being re-folded even when following rules to replace. Coffee cups were not replaced nor used glassware removed. A broken shower adjuster made showering difficult and could not be repaired during the stay. No A/C made for a sweltering room, but this is not atypical for a UK boutique hotel and it was record heat. The addition of sheer drapes to the room darkening curtains would have given better ventilation options and a larger fan would have helped. An antiquated way of assigning Internet access required a separate code per device per day which was cumbersome. The hallway lightbulbs which were actually heatlamps made the hallways like saunas upon leaving the room or elevator.
The location to the city centre is excellent, you can leave your car and walk there within 10 minutes
No air conditioning, it was very, very hot and the fan provided was not sufficient, no ventilation in the bathroom and the rest of it was very shabby, is well past its best
Staff at Reception were helpful and friendly, although the directions they gave me to my next destination in the town were poor. The location was convenient for the real purpose of my trip to Cambridge which was to present a seminar at another hotel in the city.
Room was shabby and in need of a major refurbishment, no window locks, no net curtains and as my room was on the first floor this meant that people in buildings on the other side of the road and on passing buses could see right into my room and bathroom. Food in the restaurant was mediocre at both dinner and breakfast, and service at dinner was poor, the waiter managing to drip water all over some documents that I was reading. The entire visit to the hotel was a shambles, frankly, and very expensive for the quality of accommodation and food offered.
