“My daughter, granddaughter and I enjoyed our stay at the Royal Cambridge Hotel because the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. We were attending the wedding of my eldest granddaughter in St. John's Chapel and College and the hotel was very convenient, being so close to the main street, shops and Botanical Garden. Thank you for making our saty so pleasant.”

The staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous (but see note below). The location was very good. The hotel offered significantly the best price we could find at the time for a hotel within an easy walk of Cambridge centre (although compared with deals elsewhere, like central London, it was still pricey). The rooms were pleasant and things on the whole were very satisfactory. 1 I have to say we were shocked to pass a female member of staff who was changing a room and was loudly f-ing and blinding about something in full view and hearing of hotel customers. We thought it was unusually bad form. 2 We were disappointed to find that we could not pick up our email without having to pay extra for Wi-fi. More commonly we are now finding it is available freely. 3 The day we had breakfast it was only passable - eg reconstituted orange juice, very poor queuing arrangements and only side plates available for a long time. 4 No Gideon's Bible for those that want it.

Staff were excellent - comfortable period property feel with lots of public spaces to relax in. Good cooked breakfast. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly and suggested ways to add value to our stay. Bedrooms were spotless. Some of the fittings felt tired and needed an update eg tiling in bathroom, the carpets on stairs and some of the paintwork. I felt with the position of the hotel and its period features it could become a real bijoux and period hotel but needs some investment. Dining room decor would benefit from a more classical look and less patterned carpets!

The location. This hotel needs an update. It hasn't been decorated since the 1980's and is very dated. During the night the radiators made a terrible noise and I had to keep getting up during the night totry and stop it. There was no mini bar but there was a trouser press - does anyone really need one these days!! I would not recommend this hotel.

This is our 4th stay over the last 10 years or so. We like its location and comfort. Tyhhe hotel is starting to look knocked about a bit with minor flaws. It doesn't look as if anyone does an overall pick list.

Good location with parking available. Rooms had everything you needed. Parking should be included in the price of the room. Rooms are on the small size. Customer service could be much better - having to find and pour your own luke-warm coffee isn't quite worth the price of £10 for breakfast!

The location was good. It was unfriendly. The bathroom was not clean. The radiator did not work and it was freezing both outside and inside. When I complained in the morning, they did not even apologise. The continental breakfast was ghastly. All the tables were covered in dirty plates. They cleared half a table for us! We looked at other peoples dirty plates and crumbs for the whole of breakfast.

Staff in reservations, restuarant and reception could not have been more helpful both before and during our stay. Rooms were spotless. Location excellent for shops, King's College, Fitzwilliam Museum and Botanic garden and not too far from the Railway Station. Heating problem in one of our rooms could have been fixed more quickly.

Excellent staff - all very courteous, welcoming and helpful. Extra things we asked for E.G. pillows arrived very quickly. Receptionist was extremely welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. Restaurant staff highly efficient and professional. Standard of food (breakfast and evening bar menu) was much better than it has been in the past. The range of food at breakfast was excellent and very promptly served which is so important. The quality of the so-called bar menu was as good as many a la carte in some other restaurants. We were intending to eat in Brown's but having been turned away due to no table we ate in RC and had no hesitation in deciding to eat in RC in future. We were lucky to be given the King's Room at special rate and I can honestly say that this made our stay in the RC the best stay in Cambridge that we have had in over 20 years. Having to pay for a short period of wi-fi. Many lesser hotels have free wi-fi as standard. The policy of guests being charged to park cars.

Nostalgia - the long historical tradition of parents of boys at the adjoining school staying there to visit their children! Parking is tidy, well organised, breakfast was quite good. It's a shabby, old hotel, trapped in an awkward building - corridors, back staircases, entrance hall decked out like a Wild West saloon! Our room had an earlier ceiling collapse - age? Overflowing bath? - covered by two sheets of painted plaster board, which since the customer spends 80% of their visit looking at the ceiling......? Where they have built new - the dining room annexe - it is suddenly a better quality hotel. We paid a bit more for a better room - nice decorative plaster work, but not worth it.

“Clean, comfortable and convenient for the town centre. Very friendly and helpful staff, breakfast was excellent. Room clean and comfortable with a superb view over Parkers Park. !0 minute walk from railway station but has a large free carpark if you need it. (Most hotels in the city were charging residents up to £16 per night to park). We have stayed at other Best Western hotels and we are very pleased with the standards and the prices that this chain has to offer. Looking forward to our next visit.” Colin, Rochester |
