Borough Arms Hotel26 King Street, ST5 1HX Newcastle under Lyme (Show map) Pleasant, Score from 32 reviews“Had lovely stay at hotel for friends birthday, breakfast was faultless.”
Robert,
Alsager
You can be assured of a warm welcome, impeccable service and the highest degree of comfort at this inn, conveniently situated on the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme. The Borough Arms Hotel and Restaurant is one of the oldest established hotels in the Newcastle-Under-Lyme and Stoke-On-Trent areas, with history dating back to 1783. The hotel is a traditional English coaching inn, yet has been carefully and subtly refined to offer the comforts and modern standards required by today's visitors. Independently owned and managed, the hotel retains many original features and takes great pride in offering a very personal service. As a valued guest, you may be confident that your comfort is ensured, whether you are staying in one of the 40 centrally heated rooms with private bathrooms, visiting for a meal in the restaurant, or using the conference and banqueting facilities. You may want to see the online wedding brochure, which provides more information about Civil Ceremonies and wedding receptions. Hotel Rooms: 40

Friendly staff and very easy access to the New Victoria Theatre. The room was airless unless the excellently double-glazed windows were opened onto the noisy street, The bed was tiny (for a double). The plumbing in room 4 left a lot to be desired (including a lot in the loo.)

The gentleman that owned the hotel was very polite to us We booked a small double room-the picture shown looked great!what we actually got was a bed that would have been at home in a dolls house!!it was uncomfortable and we nearly fell out of bed every time we turned over.felt rather decieved because the picture shown when clicked on small double room was not what we got

It was convenient for some of the local sights, and relatively cheap. Some of the younger restaurant staff were particularly efficient, friendly, and helpful. Very taciturn and unwelcoming reception staff. Room gloomy. Bathroom miniscule. Restaurant menu limited and erratic, and desserts obviously bought in (and, from the flavour and texture, stored overly long).

Convenient location and value for money (room and meal). Young lady in restaurant was very attentive and pleasant. The decor was a bit old-fashioned. More could be made of Newcastle's (and the hotel's) history. The shower in my room got stuck and I couldn't turn it off - also the flush on the loo wasn't working. I think the bathroom in particular needs updating.

It has parking and is relatively close to Alton towers. The staff did not seem to want to help at all and were on the verge of being rude. The first room stank of smoke so we were moved to another room. We had never been to the area before but didn't want to ask the staff about it as it felt as if talking to them would be putting them out. I would not recommend this hotel.

The staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient. We ate in the restaurant every morning at breakfast and on two other occassions, evening meal and Sunday lunch. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The hotel is really convenient for a short walk into the town centre. It has a nice little park area opposite, so from the dining room you are looking at greenery, people walking their dogs etc. Newcastle is a lovely little market town and we ate at some very good restaurants. The Basmati Indian, the Arch chinese and a fabulous steak house called Rare -all within ten minutes walking distance from the hotel. We enjoyed our stay there and would happily return. We did have to request a room change after we arrived as I had booked a smoking room and this was situated in the annexe across the carpark at the back of the hotel. It was clean but dowdy and dark and the furnishing were threadbare, so much so that I would not have been able to sit on the one chair in the room. I immediately asked for a room change and we were given a better room in the Hotel proper for the same price. It was not a smoking room but that did not matter as I just went outside and stood in the carpark when I needed to smoke. They could do with providing a covered smoking area somewhere as I stood out in the rain several times. (Sad, I know!) This second room had been freshly painted but even so , again, the furniture had seen better days and the. corners of the bathroom floor were grubby. On our final day, I did mention to the reception staff that there had been two hair grips on the floor of our bedroom since we arrived and that they were still there. Was given an apology and told that there were some 'issues' with housekeeping which were being attended to.

Shower was quite powerful. Breakfast was ok The whole place is a bit "tired". Double bed was up against a wall so partner has to climb over to get out. Room smelled of smoke. No radio in room. Only 1 chair in room. Though the room had been cleaned since previous occupant it didn't "feel" clean. Some scum on taps in bathroom. Toilet needed more than one flush.

Staff very helpful and friendly on reception and in the restaurant at breakfast. No lounge area for guests except the bar - which isn't ideal for everyone. A number of items on the bar food menu were not available and service in that respect was a bit hit and miss.

Check-in desk is open 24 hours and staff were very friendly. Breakfast is included in the rate, and contained a Staffs oatcake! I enjoyed the regional touch. This hotel is very dated, and the website is unrepresentative of the standard of the facilities. My room was small and the paint was slightly peeling in the corners; the bed linen is at least ten years old; the curtains are very thin so the sunlight woke me up at about 6 in the morning; and there aren't any toiletries provided apart from a single circle of soap, so I wasn't able to test the bath/shower. Having said that, it was all fairly clean. I just needed somewhere to crash after a friend's wedding nearby, and it definitely served that purpose. I wouldn't recommend it as somewhere to stay for any longer than one night.

Breakfast was good, both choice and quality, and service was excellent Room, (26), was very clean, and bed comfortable, but, there was bedside table only on one side, and no bedside lamps, only a single lamp above head of bed. There was no clock radio, (though there was a tv, with a poor picture). Shower was effective and powerful, but cubicle was a little on the small side, and the shower doors didn't quite close properly. Nothing wrong worthy of a complaint, but overall it could have just been a little better.

Exactly what I was looking for - location and transport accessability were excelent for my needs. It is good to take a shower and go to bed, but the rooms are nto the ones you would like to stay in for the whole day - if this is not what you want to do, this hotel will suit you perfectly. as in above - I would have been very put down If I were to stay inside for few days w/o coming out. but since it was not the case - the only poor thing I can mention is internet availability - WiFI only works properly from inside the Hotel's bar, otherwise everythiong was ok.

The motel style rooms which opened to a carpark, did not feel very safe! One had to cross a big car park in order to get to the main hotel and reception - not very handy for night porter access etc. Apart from this, the whole place felt like a time travel I.E. being in the 70s. The place needs serious modernisation!
