The hotel atmosphere was very comfortable, friendly and relaxed - it didn't feel like I was staying at a hotel. The staff were all very approachable and guests comfort was their priority. The food was excellent. My room was spacious, airy and had plenty of storage

Good location, especially for keen walkers/photographers.Well appointed rooms. Clean, warm, friendly staff, good food and wine at a reasonable price. With three red squirrels scampering around the grounds, what more could you ask for ? We would certainly recommend this hotel to our friends.

Hotel has such a relaxing atmosphere. The lounge is littered with wee nooks and crannies to sit and relax. The real log and peat fires are so welcoming. However the food is on another level- it is superb! The evening meals are worthy of a mitchelin star. I have never tased such tender pork, which just melted in my mouth. The breakfast was of equal standard, the porridge was lovely and creamy and the poached agg perfect. Loads of choices for breakfast with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs popular, eggs benedict or omlette as well as a full cumbrian breakfast. Location is lovely - bit windy to get to - but the views over the fells and watching the red squirrels was wonderful. Hope to go back very soon. Bathroom layout was unusual due to the velux windows, tiolet was a bit squashed between shower and wall. Lovely double bed - but room could easily have taken a king size if not 6ft bed. Having a king size bed is very common for most couples and it would have been pleasant to continue this on holiday instead of down sizing into a double. Did get a free upgrade which was very much appreciated.

The location was great for walking in the Borrowdale area. Hotel is very quaint with traditional standards. Room 19 could do with some minor room maintenance to the bathroom. Extarct fan very noisy with excessive overrun, as the room has no windows fan on every time light is switched on. Annoying toilet seat which woud not stay in open position.

The excellent, polite, friendly staff, its beautiful location in lovely grounds and beautiful scenery, the superb food which was presented with finesse and many other little but very welcome details, like having complimentary bottles of water, biscuits and small chocolates to go with your tea and coffee, also provided in your room. There is also a small library of DVD's for you to watch if you so wish, also in your room. We had an excellent six night stay and did'nt want to leave!! Faultless during our stay.

Unbelievably beautiful location right in the heart of the best part of the Lakes. A great base for walkers who want good quality accommodation. Newly refurbished, clean, comfortable and relaxing. The village of Grange is an easy walk and is just gorgeous. We could see the summit of Cat Bells and Skiddaw from our bedroom. Castle Crag is in view from the restaurant, as are the resident red squirrels and wide variety of birds. Dining Area was very quiet and might benefit from some background music but generally we loved the hotel.

Beautiful setting, great staff, excellent food, lovely rooms & very peaceful. Dinner menu is a bit expensive - £39 pp which with wine worked out around £100 pn. There isn't a bar menu so you can't just have a lighter meal.

Peace and quiet of the location. Friendlyness and excellent support of staff. There were no young screaming children, bliss! Although parents with young children are not discouraged, I do not feel that this is an hotel that is suitable for them from both a price and location perspective. The local area of this part of the Lake District is stunning, much better than Windmere or Ambleside. Keswick is just a few miles down the road, including and excellent Lakeside theatre. I would like to see a sauna/steam room facility installed as this could be very much appreciated after a days walking.
