Staff were disorganised in the bar & restaurant when it was busy.

Very family oriented - not so great for couples having a weekend away...

Stunning location, beautiful grounds, lovely walks. The first room we checked into was very poor for the money we had paid and we asked to be moved. The second room was lovely.

The Castle Bistro was noisey, bright lights (not in keeping with an original castle) and disappointing food. Afternoon tea we were told was to be served in a cosy small room with a log fire but we were put in the large cold (not cosy) Edwardian Grill on our own, no atmosphere and extremely disappointing especially as it was a treat for my brother's birthday. We complained and had a small percentage deducted from the bill but that didn't make up for the spoiled experience. The Manager promised to have a chat the next morning as he knew we were unhappy but he didn't get in touch after saying he would, consequently we cancelled our reserved evening meal in the Edwardian Grill and went to eat out locally. Our conclusion is that Bovey Castle is a beautiful castle in a stunning location, lovely walks etc but the food, service and the ambience of the place is lacking and is most definitely in our opinion a 4 star and not 5 star rating which we are used to! We wouldn't return.

Grounds are stunning as is everything else

The main restaurant was very pricey and allows young children that can spoil a romantic expensive dinner. I have no objection to children or their noise in the Bistro.

It is a fantastic country hotel with large beautiful gardens, stunning views, pleasant and cosy atmosphere, delicious food. The staff is not always perfect but they are very kind, helpful and friendly, the overall impression and feeling is very positive and our stay was really worth the money we paid for it. We will definitely come back and for a longer time.

Unique, good service

Wasn't told prior to arrival all the hotel offered. Could have spent the day and gone swimming but didn't know untill checkout!! We were charged for a service fee we weren't told about.

Very relaxed atmosphere feels more like a country house than a hotel.Loads to do for adults and childern. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great hotel in beautiful location.

Nothing really to dislike apart from being expensive and childerns sofa beds very uncomfortable.

das Trinkgeld wird mit 14% automatisch bei jedem Essen dazugerechnet, ich finde schade das ich nicht selbst entscheiden wieviel Trinkgeld ich geben möchte.

Schloss Atmosphäre ohne aufdringlichen Luxus. Grossartiges Essen.

Un endroit magnifique, idyllique, merveilleux... le personnel d'une gentillesse incroyable, on se croirait dans un conte de fées. Tout est fait pour que chacun se sente immédiatement à l'aise, qui que vous soyez, que vosu ayez envie de tranquillité, ou au contraire de faire plein de choses. Un site exceptionnel.

The building itself is wonderful, it has been well maintained and faithfully restored. The decor is very much in keeping with its history. The setting is stunning and the grounds are immaculately kept. They welcome pets, rather than tolerating them. For the most part the staff are exceptionally polite and helpful, and the swimming pool is lovely.

A hotel that charges these prices carries the burden of very high guest expectations, and therefore has to pay very close attention to detail. Our room was very clean, but a badly stained blind and a very dirty bed cover let it down. The worst point is the terrible service at the Bistro. We waited 30 mins on one occasion to be given a menu. The food took another hour. We say amongst dirty tables, and listened to excuses from a very stressed maitre d'. We didn't order coffees and puddings because we were losing the will to live.They simply did not have enough staff, and in a 5 star hotel that is not acceptable.

The property is superb and offers all the facilities of a great inland resort. The flair and patina of the buildings and the golf course are a real attraction. Surprising attention to detail in preserving the spirit and Englishness of the property.

Unfortunately, Bovey Castle is one of the potentially great hotels where the reality falls far short of the ambitions. The dinner at the Edwardian Grill was good, but the food was by no means as good as the hefty price implies (about £75 per person including a moderately priced wine - £35 for one bottle, which was excellent). The price of the breakfast was comparatively modest (£10 continental breakfast buffet, £15 english breakfast) but so was the buffet selection. Service at breakfast was poor: coffee was served in pots that had previously been used for tea and some leaves still blocked the funnel, service was slow and inattentive; used plates were cleared, instead the toast rack was placed on a used plate because of lack of space on the table; we observed how several guests opted to get clean cutlery from neighbouring tables without prompting any reaction by the personnel; others dumped their used plates on vacated tables that were not cleared for 20 minutes. The lack of attention was comparable in the swimming pool area where no attempted was made to clear used towels that had been left by guests in the pool area (we spent one hour there). A comical aspect is that the concierge is obviously under instructions to only allow expensive cars to park within sight of the main entrance; if you drive a more modest vehicle, your vehicle will be politely parked out of the focus of potential snapshots of the forecourt. This point aside, the concierge and reception personnel were very attentive and cannot be faulted.

Great location, fantastic building and grounds, very friendly staff. We wanted to stay in a castle and got exactly that - even if it was only built in 1907. This was a very special luxury treat for us.

We got completely lost on the way there, signage wasn't very good.
