Harrogate
In the pretty market town of Ross-on-Wye, this Georgian property has a large garden overlooking the river. Most rooms have views of the water or the 12th-century ruins of Wilton Castle, just 2 minutes’ walk from the building. The River Wye is famous for salmon fishing, and guests can enjoy the Wye Valley Walk, which runs through pretty woodland as it follows the course of the river. The Bridge House is also convenient for venturing into Wales, with the border only 20 minutes’ drive away. Freshly baked pastries are served in the breakfast room or on the terrace overlooking the Wye. Full English options are also available, with food made from fresh local produce. Rooms at Bridge House are large and individually decorated, and each has free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a DVD player. Tea and coffee making facilities feature in every room, along with a work desk, seating area, and an en suite bathroom with free toiletries. The Bridge House is just being refurbished and we had the pleasure of sleeping in a room no-one else had used. The room was well decorated and furnished with excellently chosen chairs and bed. The bathroom was particularly impressive. The owners went out of their way to ensure our comfort, giving good advice on places to eat and visit. The breakfast used locally supplied ingredients and was comparable with the food we had just eaten in a 4* London hotel. Bridge House is on the outskirts of Ross on Wye so getting into town was a bit of a walk. Not a real problem.

Garbor the manager was good company and made up for the fact that the hotel is in administration People mainly go to the Wilton for its food reputation, the restaurant is closed, and they do not intend to open until the Hotel is sold

The view was pleasant and the staff were enthusiastic. The chef was amazing, impressed with the quality of food. Our booking was apparently lost although this wasnt acknowledged even at the point of paying the account. Only acknowledged once I questioned what level of accommodation they had registered for our stay. Only offered a discounted rate because I raised query.

A very pleasant and quiet retreat The toilet seat was uncomfortably insecure and the window curtains were too light to ensure a sleep beyond early dawn.

We were the first guests of the new owners and made to feel really welcome. They are planning a major refit in the New Year and we will certainly return to see the improvements. We wish them luck with their new business.

Royal Lodge
The hotel is nestled just below Symonds Yat Rock and stands exclusively in grounds of almost 5 acres, overlooking the river. It has terraced gardens of magnolia trees and a well established wisteria.
