The hostel wasn't a youth hostel, as everyone there were in their mid 30s-40s. The hostel was quite dimly lit, giving it a very dodgy feel. Staff wasn't very helpful. Beds also creak a lot at night. No plugs in the room, only in the common area. There are cheaper and nicer hostels in Brighton itself. The photos did not match what I saw when I reached. Honestly the worst hostel i've stayed in.
Location near the Beach was good, on good bus routes however a long walk back into Brighton City Center. Our dorm room looked fairly newly renovated.
Communal facilities were unclean. Went to use a communal toilet and it was covered in poo. Spoke to reception staff about it and they said that they would get someone to clean it right away. Went out for the afternoon then when I came back it was still in the same condition despite signs in the toilets stating that if anything was not satisfactory with the facilities to speak to reception staff. The nest morning when I came down for breakfast there were people sleeping on all the tables and chairs leaving no room to sit and eat. We had asked about leaving luggage for the day the night before, and was told to speak to the breakfast staff the next morning and they would take care of for us. The sheets on my bed were dirty. We we asked about this that next morning we were made to feel as it it were a burden to store our luggage for the day. Lastly wanted to leave food in the fridge as we were hiking the next day, but was made to feel so uncomfortable that we were unsure if it would still be there the next morning, leading us to take it up to the room instead.
Massively expensive for a very low standard of hostel. Front door wouldn't lock at night. Tv not working. Marks all over walls. Cold shower. Breakfast a joke- 30 mins to serve all guests. Sullen staff. Horrible unsafe and unfriendly.
Great value for money, was everything like it said, it would be.
Excellent location near my school and close to the sea.
Tea in mug
Bed so wobby every time girl below or myself moved. Felt like on boat.
Everything. Rude staff. Disgusting room. Floor held together with duct tape. Bedding stained and not washed. Horrid smell. Unsafe atmosphere/unsavory guests.
I liked the receptionist. And the room was very good for a hostel. It had proper beds and little extras.
The shower seemed a bit cold.
Fresh air in the sleeping room, breeze from the sea. Location near the sea and near buses to Brighton.
The showers I had were cold. No hot water. Breakfast setup not organised well and not clear about who gets breakfast. Also it is too late in the day.
Atmosphere and good natured receptionist.
Charging £70 for a bunk bed in a mixed dormitory with no access to toilet or bathroom on a floor of 40 people. I am sure this contravenes Health and Safety regulations.
The quiet location away from the central.
There was no breakfast left within the designated time (9.30am-10am) even though it was stipulated in the payment voucher that guests were entitled for free breakfast. The fact that reception was not 24 hours made ad-hoc enquiry to be difficult.
No parking facility's, great if your back packing, if you need to park, there's an NCP half a mile away, I was told it was £5 a night,it's not its £5 for twelve hours & you have to be gone by 8am, so you must park at 8pm & leave the hostel at about 7.45, not worth it, stay in a B&B.
Proximity to beach. wLAN worked well.
This was by far the worst hostel on my UK trip! Showers didn't work, trash lying in the hallways, beds squeaking. If it had been very cheap, fair enough. But no, this was even more expensive than hostels in, e.g., Bath and Oxford. I was very disappointed!
Nothing at all.
The location is far from city center. Nothing in the room was prepared, no soap, no towel. How terrible it was? More than that when i got into the room, i was shocked because one woman was already in there. She planned to stay for 2 months so in the room was totally dirty, messy, and smelly with unwashed clothes and her stuff. The bin basket was over full, no room for me to hang my clothes or even put my stuff on. The bed was so bad, eveytime I moved my body, it made a noise. I stayed only one night and moved out early in the morning. When i arrived I informed that i would like to cancel for the next 2 days of my booking (for 4 nights) but the receptionist didn't agree and tried to say that I have to do it 2 days in advance. (Infact, i did). Anyway, i had to pay for the total amount. I left the refund form there. Staying only 1 night here was a nightmare and it was the worst time in my life!!
The mid week prices
Trying to make an early exit found I had to unlock doors with keys as they were locked,as the exits where no marked very well, lack of staff,
The place is nice and quiet. Near from the beach.
Everything it was fine
It was absolutely disgusting! It took forever to check in, the room I was staying in with in such a horrible state.. The drain in the shower didn't drain properly with hair etc floating around in the water. Worst hostel I've ever stayed in!
Other members of the staff were nicer.
The first lady I met at the reception wasn't helpful or polite at all. The room was horribly dirty and it smelled horrible too. I found the place extremely dark and despite some kindness of some members of the staff, I wouldn't recommend this hostel.
Booked a single room and got sole occupancy of a dorm. This was not made clear on the website and BYHs photos are misleading in this respect. Mattresses were thin and lumpy and I strongly suspected that the linen hadn't been laundered. Staff at breakfast grumpy. Don't stay here. Terrible and I have nothing positive to say.
The tv was good
The bed was horrible!! Springs sticking out, painful sleep, squeaky bunk bed so bad that if u breathed it would squeak!! People also live there which I didn't like. I thought I was staying at a Youth Hostel not a halfway house
The staff, the breakfast, the location and the en suite bathroom.
The beds - they were really uncomfortable and were so squeaky they woke up the whole dorm when you had to go to bed and get up in the morning. I did not have a comfortable sleep the whole time I stayed at BYH.
it was easy to find
i didn't know beforehand that it was a mix room
Good size beds and nice on-suite bathroom. Pleasant staff.
The breakfast wasn't very good. The cereal tasted stale and the milk was warm.
