the room is very stailish
there were no hot water and the heating was very low
Stayed for two night, the room had a lot of character and the rooms at the back are nice and quiet
On the first night stayed at the front room and it was quite noisy and could hear hoovering at 4am in the morning outside my room
In town centre for bar's and restaurants.
Location is excellent. Clean. Friendly staff.
Carpet on the stairs need replacing.
Location in centre was great and the building was old and sympathetically reflected its age in the dinning room and common areas. Staff were helpful and breakfast was OK, in fact the porridge was especially good.
The bedroom was passable for the money but alas the bathroom was 30 years past its best and in dire need of - well starting again!
The staff was friendly and the bed confortable
Nothing to complaint about
The location is very good. All shops are practically at your doorstep!
The extra bed could be of better comfort and the "haunted hotel" reputation was quite a bother if you are not into ghosts
The room was nice, very hot though and noisy. but quite unique.
The breakfast was burnt and dried up and the waiter couldn't speck English. When we asked for some brown sauce he brought out some toast and then cleared off for the rest of the meal so we couldn't ask him again for some.
I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.
The historic feel of the hotel is wonderful. Our room (room no1) had original wooden beams and had an authentic Tudor feel to it.
The vibe of the hotel feels empty. The building looks brilliant and the staff are warm and friendly. But it feels like no effort has been made to make the hotel welcoming. The restaurant feels like you are eating in a barn, not a cosy restaurant.
the architecture, and the quite cosey feel. The staff were lovely.
the bar was at the end of the function room and felt more like a barn.
The location is perfect the staff friendly
The bed was rock hard it felt like we were sleeping on the floor.the window was jammed open so we didn't get to sleep till 5am, it's very noisy my advice check the windows before you accept your room!!
We enjoyed our stay in this authentic Elizabethen hotel plenty of architecture to study. Plenty tea coffee in room.Would stay here again. Breakfast was good.
The living heart, the community that once was, has vanished no one lives there, shame only businesses so it's like a modern market place not open all hours, but still worth a visit, you can still imagine what it must have been like 60 years ago. The bed needed securing back to the wall, the toilet cystern took ages to refill, difficulty adjusting the water temperature on the shower and the TV remote batteries were flat but not a disaster by any means.
Good location, good food, good service
Booked and paid for the four poster suite but on arrival it was not available. Deeply disappointed!!!
Location, cleanliness and late check-in
This is the second time to stay at this hotel. First time was very good, this time I had trouble with heaters, there was no way to turn them off, and it was too hot in the room, even with the window open, causing an uncomfortable sleep. The staff couldn't find the key for my room during check-in, but that wasn't a major issue, because they promised they would allow me in when needed, and I only spent one night in the room so didn't go out really.
Location is central in High Street, close to bus station and Castle Museum as well as to all shops. Access around the clock very good for late arrivals and late nights. Staff were kind and considerate.
Upstairs rooms can be a bit of a trek if you have a disability of any sort. No lifts.
Maybe the look from the outside.
I was in room 14, room overlooked what can only be described as an open sewer. Alley way full of rubbish, and vagrants. Room too hot. No radiator controls providied. Noisy. Expensive. Didn't get a wink of sleep. Avoid.
Gloss painted bath and bathroom in a poor state of repair.
anything it ok
the wifi not work good in the room.
Location was great and a lovely old building.
Very shabby, torn net curtains, constant dripping tap in the bathroom, doors banging very loudly and people running up and down the corridor, finally no shades on any bulbs which made rooms very stark and even the manager couldn't find me one shade...... Unbelievable, I wasn't sorry to leave.
Just a lovely building. really good location. Staff helpful even in the morning to six at the time. Thank you!
Our room(8) happened to be a bad location. Saturday night of the youth shouted through the window drunk.
Quietness and location
Although you don't expect modern conditions in an ancient hotel this was a trifle disappointing. The shower was a no better than a dribble and the bath panel was almost falling off. That said it's a hotel I've always wanted to stay in and will do so again next time I'm in Colchester.I'm glad I travelled alone as my girlfriend would have been a lot more fussy than I was but for me it was fine and somewhere warm and comfortable to lay my head.
staff most helpful and the food was excellent as was the location for University of Essex as bus stop just across the road
internet access a bit difficult to get
I liked the hotel overall the food was brilliant the staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was warm and welcoming
The heating was on all the time in the room and it was boiling hot had to have window open all night
