“Amazing dining room and architecture of the building. Nice bed, and room.”
Jeremy,
Bedford
The Red Lion Hotel was built in 1465 and is in the center of Colchester, Britain's oldest town on record. The historic building has original Tudor features, including wooden beams. The Red Lion Hotel is one of the oldest inns in the area. The individually decorated rooms mix traditional charm with modern comforts, including TVs, radios, suit presses and tea/coffee. All rooms have private bathrooms The Red Lion's old banqueting hall is now the Parliament Restaurant. The restaurant offers classic dishes and still has the original wood-beamed ceiling. There is also a bar and 24-hour room service is available. The hotel is a short walk from the shops and Colchester Town Train Station is 550 yards away. Parking is available for an additional fee in the public parking lot less than half a mile away. Hotel Rooms: 24 Most recent booking for this hotel was yesterday at 13:14 from Ireland.

It was local to where we were visiting Noisy extractor fans kept us awake at night breakfast was not worth £3.00 never mind the £6.50 each we paid on top of our price for a room very poor indeed also we were given the room key when it had not been made ready even though we had turned up after the booking in time

Right in the town center, very convenient to take bus or taxi to anywhere. Staffs are very helpful and services are prompt. There have been many comments criticizing the facilities of this hotel, but as far as I feel, it was not that bad. My room was cosy to live in, and nights were quiet for sleep. As for the price, I think it's somewhat expensive. And no free Internet access in the rooms.

The general style and friendliness of the hotel and staff was very good indeed. I would like to say that the receptionist staff member upon my arrival on 28.3.12 at about 4pm was particularly helpful in sorting out some directuions for me from the hotel to the business venue I had to attend. Very much appreciated.

It is very central and it has a cosy feel to it. The lack of a lift is a hassale and it could do with new stair carpet and new decor.

For me the important thing was price and a central location in Colcheter as I had several business trips to make using it as a base. The historical nature of the building appealed. Bed was comfy. Good sized room. Pleasant staff. It is in a very noisy location. Light sleepers - beware! By the third night I had just about become inured to the street noise. The heating system is also incredibly noisy. There was no hot water at 630 in the morning.

The staff at the Red Lion were very friendly and helpful. Food was very nice and service was prompt. Bath and shower in room 11 needed attention...When switched to shower function, hot tap did not stop running, meaning you had to detach shower and use it at other end of bath otherwise you would burn your feet!!

Excellent location, middle of Colchester High Street. Very friendly and thoughtful staff. Very clean. Excellent value. The shower was a little weaker than I personally like. Suffers (as most old hotels do) from squeaky floorboards. But no massive issues.

I liked the hotel, as it was in the centre of town, It would have been nice to know that the hotel doesn't have it's own car park, and that the nearest car park was 10 minutes walk.

No heating to room.very cold through out our stay, informed reception, and was told nothing could be done to remedy problem .No hot water on demand, had to call down to reception to remedy problem and then had to wait a further 30 minutes for water to heat up.shower completely inadequate, was more like a trickle from a watering can. Room service served us luke warm tea in the morning. On the whole very very dissapointing. Will never book again or recommend to any one.

It was central and a building with plenty of character due to the old building making everything less than vertical/horizontal. Convenient for central Colchester location requirement and room was clean and good value for money. It met my need for crash pad for a social in Colchester. There was no hot water when I tried to have a shower and I was allocated a room at the front of the hotel which was a little inconvenient hearing the clashing and banging from people in the street.

My husband and I stayed at the Red Lion Hotel for one night and we found the staff friendly and accommodating. We liked the parliament room for its old oak beams. We also enjoyed finding out about its history from leaflets placed in the hotel. Our room was warm enough and the bed was comfortable. We stayed in room number 24 and it was quiet. I particularly liked the bottles of hand wash and hair and body wash that were in the bathroom. Overall we had a very pleasant experience at the Red Lion Hotel. We thought the parliament room got cold in the morning where we had breakfast. An electric heater would have warmed it up nicely. Even though our room was comfortable I felt it needed updating in the bathroom and the lights above our bed were a bit wonky and too bright.

The building is brilliant, very old & full of history, it's like stepping back in time. It does has the potential to be a truly magnificent hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. The radiator did not work in our room - it was very cold. I also did not like the leaking shower which constantly dripped resulting in a disgustingly mouldy shower curtain, we decided not to shower in the morning. Finally the breakfast was served cold. Much as I would like to recommend this hotel I feel I can't as the basics are letting them down.

“Staff at the hotel were great fun to talk to along with professional service. Made my little holiday break perfect along with my partner. Done some research in colchester to find that this hotel is great and the other hotel i was going to choose has very bad opinions. Facilities are also great along with the location of the hotel.” Marcus, Lowestoft |
