Brook Red Lion HotelHigh Street, CO1 1DJ Colchester (Show map) Good, Score from 111 reviews“Amazing dining room and architecture of the building. Nice bed, and room.”
Jeremy,
Bedford
The Red Lion Hotel was built in 1465 and is in the center of Colchester, Britain's oldest town on record. The historic building has original Tudor features, including wooden beams. The Red Lion Hotel is one of the oldest inns in the area. The individually decorated rooms mix traditional charm with modern comforts, including TVs, radios, suit presses and tea/coffee. All rooms have private bathrooms The Red Lion's old banqueting hall is now the Parliament Restaurant. The restaurant offers classic dishes and still has the original wood-beamed ceiling. There is also a bar and 24-hour room service is available. The hotel is a short walk from the shops and Colchester Town Train Station is 550 yards away. Parking is available for an additional fee in the public parking lot less than half a mile away. Hotel Rooms: 24

The staff at the Red Lion were very friendly and helpful. Food was very nice and service was prompt. Bath and shower in room 11 needed attention...When switched to shower function, hot tap did not stop running, meaning you had to detach shower and use it at other end of bath otherwise you would burn your feet!!

Excellent location, middle of Colchester High Street. Very friendly and thoughtful staff. Very clean. Excellent value. The shower was a little weaker than I personally like. Suffers (as most old hotels do) from squeaky floorboards. But no massive issues.

I liked the hotel, as it was in the centre of town, It would have been nice to know that the hotel doesn't have it's own car park, and that the nearest car park was 10 minutes walk.

No heating to room.very cold through out our stay, informed reception, and was told nothing could be done to remedy problem .No hot water on demand, had to call down to reception to remedy problem and then had to wait a further 30 minutes for water to heat up.shower completely inadequate, was more like a trickle from a watering can. Room service served us luke warm tea in the morning. On the whole very very dissapointing. Will never book again or recommend to any one.

It was central and a building with plenty of character due to the old building making everything less than vertical/horizontal. Convenient for central Colchester location requirement and room was clean and good value for money. It met my need for crash pad for a social in Colchester. There was no hot water when I tried to have a shower and I was allocated a room at the front of the hotel which was a little inconvenient hearing the clashing and banging from people in the street.

My husband and I stayed at the Red Lion Hotel for one night and we found the staff friendly and accommodating. We liked the parliament room for its old oak beams. We also enjoyed finding out about its history from leaflets placed in the hotel. Our room was warm enough and the bed was comfortable. We stayed in room number 24 and it was quiet. I particularly liked the bottles of hand wash and hair and body wash that were in the bathroom. Overall we had a very pleasant experience at the Red Lion Hotel. We thought the parliament room got cold in the morning where we had breakfast. An electric heater would have warmed it up nicely. Even though our room was comfortable I felt it needed updating in the bathroom and the lights above our bed were a bit wonky and too bright.

The building is brilliant, very old & full of history, it's like stepping back in time. It does has the potential to be a truly magnificent hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. The radiator did not work in our room - it was very cold. I also did not like the leaking shower which constantly dripped resulting in a disgustingly mouldy shower curtain, we decided not to shower in the morning. Finally the breakfast was served cold. Much as I would like to recommend this hotel I feel I can't as the basics are letting them down.

Amazing building nice staff The bar and dining areas were reminiscent of the worst type of 1970s pub with sticky carpets. The shower in my room didn’t work and the water came out in a dribble. I was lucky though as 2 of my colleagues didn’t even have hot water.

Great character. Fabulously unusual. Expect a fair amount of noise from the high street on Friday and Saturday nights. If you embrace the age of the building and it's thin walls you'll have a fabulous stay. It is in need of a little modernizing in the bathrooms but they were very clean and well presented.

Its location is superb, just in the middle of Colchester's High Street, with easy access to any of the points of interest in the town. The building, from 1465, is amazing and the stay was lovely. The bathroom wasn't clean, it was difficult to think on having a shower. We didn't have central heating, our radiator was broken, the staff gave as a electric heater though. The noise from the clubs and the people who were partying in the High Street.

The building is beautiful, the room was comfortable. Due to rules stopping victorian buildings from being fitted with double glazing and proximity to the high street, ever drunken yell was audible. However, my room was on the side facing the high street so other rooms may be much quieter.

The hotel is set in an amazing building, which has been well maintained; I hadn't realised that until I got there, but it would have been another reason for booking with you. You should be proud of your history and do more with it.

I liked everything about our stay. The room was lovely, clean and very much in keeping with the hotel and it's age. The location was perfect. But in particular the staff, they were friendly, efficient, professional and the level of customer service they offered was spectacular. The only thing that marred our stay was another guest who was incredibly rude, unnecessarily so, to one of your staff at breakfast. Not surprisingly, your staff member dealt with the situation very well and never wavered in her friendliness or professionalism.

It is so historical and picturesque as comfort and renovated. It is situated in the heart of Colchester, near London. The staff was friendly and available 24/24h. The room made you feels as a traveler during Victorian period with all modern facilities. It was also fairly clean and well-heated. As it is situated in the heart of Colchester, between pubs and opposite the town’s club, there is a lot of noise, especially on Saturday (and feast) nights. However, this is not a great problem as pubs and clubs closes after a specific hour. There was also a small problem with hot water because sometimes it wasn’t enough or adequate hot.

We we're upgraded to a four poster room as they couldn't find find our reservation on their system. The Duty Manager was really professional and polite. The decor or the hotel was superb, love the old buildings like that, full of character.. 2 things spoilt it. The first was that there no hot water, couldn't have a shower! When mentioned to the Receptionist she was fairly dismissive about. Second thing was at the buffet table my partner helped homself to cereal and the milk was off. The waitress was excellent tho' she offered to change it etc.

Lovely building and charming staff. However dont have a room on the front if you want any sleep!!!! Saturday night drunks very loudly( its a very old building with poor fitting windows and no secondary glazing) followed by an extremely noisy street cleaning vehicle for an hour well before 6 oclock!!
