Barrow is a Victorian town surrounded by beaches and inspiring scenery. There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area, including golf courses, a pedestrianised shopping precinct, the Dock Museum and a large indoor market (open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
The South Lakes Wild Animal Park is one of Europe's leading conservation zoos and is located in Dalton-in-Furness, a few miles away from the hotel.
With the hotel as a comfortable base, you could also visit the ruins of St. Mary of Furnesia, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1127, or Piel Castle, built in the 14th Century, which is accessible via the Roa Island ferry service.
Nearby Ulverston is home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum and the Manjushri Mahayana Buddhist Centre at Coniston Head Priory. Established in 1975 as part of the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition, it is now the centre of the new Kadampa tradition. Housed in a 19th century mock-Gothic building (built on the site of an Augustinian priory), it has 70 acres of grounds. The design of the new temple is based on a mandala with 4 doorways and 3 tiers.
The hotel is also conveniently situated for Furness General Hospital, making it a good base whether you are a budding doctor making your final examinations or just wanting to visit family or friends. The number one bus, and the number 1A bus, run regularly between the hotel and the hospital.
