This 'hotel' is trading on a lie. It clearly states on it's website that it holds Visit Britain tourist awards. It DOES NOT. I have checked the Visit Britain website and they are not even listed. I understand they have been sold to Wetherspoons and will soon close. If they don't close soon I will be reporting them to Visit Britain, who I hope will act accordingly. Having owned a hotel in the past I know how hard people work to achieve and retain 'ratings' and feel disgusted when establishments act as Browns at Tavistock do. Future customers beware!!
Friendly atmosphere, old style English hotel...
Absolutely NO four stars for this hotel!
Friendly and welcoming staff Excellent food in restaurant
Good hotel, reasonably priced, good centre of town location, comfortable room and a good breakfast.
Minor points, room was a little cramped as it had a single bed as well .as a double in it. We were not told that there was an option for a cooked breakfast, but when it came it was very good.
Grubby! My room was cold. Bedding seen better days. The shower head wouldnt stay in the holder. Coat hook hanging off the door No hairdryer in room This is my third time staying at Browns and its definately my last.
Price and location
The bathroom had little ventilation and smelled strongly of damp and the windows were running with water
Extra blanket in room. Sensible hanging space. That's about it!
Room B 3 dowdy although supposed to have been a 'superior'. Poor colour coordination.Bathroom lacks thought - nowhere to put anything. Pillows lumpy. Feather cushions in room despite highlighting no feathers in room on booking form.ONE socket above a chair to plug in kettle - dangerous. Radio unplugged because no socket. Chair grubby - has seen better days.
had to pay for car parking and sheets not clean no molten brown toiletries as advertised!
Paid extra £30 for superior room and could not see what I got for my money
Bedding a bit used
Absolutely loved this hotel, especially the wonderfully friendly staff. I rarely write reviews, but this is really a gem.
food , staff excellent, modern hotel, lovely position.
room i stayed in the linen was very clen but a little tired looking
Location in the centre of Tavistock. Very friendly staff.
Tired room and bathroom in need of refurbishment. Not up to 4* standard. Poor value for money.
The bed was uber comfy. The location very central. Loved the breakfasts
Perhaps a herbal tea in the room would be nice.
Staff all great. Breakfast ok. comfy bed.
Little out dated decor. Expensive.
We had the superior twin room which was super - there was a secret door to a Hobbity room with a single bed. The room was quiet and I had one of the best sleeps ever in a hotel with no traffic noise and no rowdy guests. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of hot water. I would give the grout a bit of a going over with bleach if it was my hotel. The staff were variable in demeanor but the lovely ones really were lovely.
The brasserie food was ridiculously over-priced for what was really little more than pub grub. Forget paying £14.50 for fish and chips - there's a great chippy up the road. The puddings were shamefully over-priced and amateurish. The inclusive continental breakfast consisted of dry croissants and pains au chocolat, and the coffee was wishy-washy. If Brown's wasn't selling itself as a gourmet hotel it wouldn't be so bad, but it doesn't live up to its label and consequently is pretentious.
didnt like beds would rather of had a english breakfast included
The decor in the bar & restaurant areas. The molton Brown toiletries. The period features. The central location.
The paint in the bathroom was peeling off. Dirty marks on the walls and curtains. Cobwebs, obviously not dusted. Kettle and fan not safety tested since 2009! Dead flies stuck to the blind. dirty seal around bath. No sugar or milk with coffee making facilities in room. You can feel springs in the mattress. No croissants or fruit with continental breakfast. Very poor, I was surprised it had a four star rating, I felt very let down.
decor not that great, but ok. probably what makes it homely.
The location for towns market was excellent, the proximity of Dartmoor led to some lovely walks too
The bed was comfortable, and the staff were really amazing, friendly, and always willing to help
The room was not worth £129 for the night....This was a treat for myself and my husband as we went to a concert, and did not want to drive across the moors late at night...The air conditioning was so loud....you could not rest in the afternoon to read a book....or have a relaxing bath....so ended up going out.....The room was not that clean.....cobwebs, hairs in the bath...dust on cabinets....also bath was very slippery no bath mat provided,Thankfully the noisy fan was not on at night....but started in the morning,Breakfast was included,a continental breakfast....which was poor, the croissants etc were cold, the cup was dirty, and if you wanted a cooked breakfast that was £9 on top...£18 for two.for the price of the room you would have thought cooked breakfast would be included...
Comfort, cleanliness, food, staff
Mostly good - room was a little too warm during the night
The service received from the staff was excellent. The hotel was clean, traditional with a modern twist.
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and booked a superior double bedroom. We were extremely disappointed with the room. It was very small, with only enough space in the room to walk around the bed. The mini bar in the room was not stocked and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. We stayed over in the Mews block behind the hotel and there was a smell of damp on entering it to go up the stairs to the room. The walls in the room were so thin that we could hear the taps being turned on and off next door, the coat hangers being moved about and people talking.
Great staff. Excellent dining. Central location for shopping.
No onsite parking - only relevant for extended stays. Mine was overnight so not really an issue for me.
