Idyllically situated on the riverbank in the picturesque conservation village of Sonning-on-Thames near Reading, this charming hotel prides itself on friendly and professional service at all times.
Score from 213 reviews Very good
Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. It is a quaint property in a fabulous, tranquil location. Peaceful and very quiet at night. The river is rift there with a beautiful tow path.
The (beautifully decorated) room needed a good clean, but the bathroom was just downright filthy. Pubic hairs in the shower even after I complained begrudgingly and they cleaned it. The towels smelt like stale food. What a shame - it could be stunning.
Pub with character Breakfast Staff friendly
Mildew in bathrooms. No mixer taps in sink Rooms dirty. Carpeting in rooms. Noise from pub Tiny rooms. No space to open suitcase. Major need of spring cleaning and upgrading rooms and bathrooms
Quaint English location and historic building. Staff friendly. Food ok.
Could have been fresher. Communal areas looking very tired.
The stories from Dennis re Jimmy Paige, the Delicious breakfast & the charming room :)
Lovely upgraded room. Very comfortable superking bed. Quiet setting. Great breakfast. Friendly owners. Great location for going to the dinner theatre at Sonning and helpful staff showed us the shortcut through the churchyard.
Had to ask for milk for tea in room . Quickly rectified but meant fresh milk was out in room overnight . If you are going to put sauce in little dishes with teaspoons [which I hate anyway] don't hand over a part used dish from another table when asked for sauce. Minor gripes though in otherwise perfect stay.
This is the second time I have stayed at the Bull, and as before the staff were great, service excellent, and the room well presented. Dinner was absolutely lovely, and the atmosphere is always good. Breakfast was good, quick and efficient service, and again friendly chap doing breakfast. Would highly recommend it to anyone, just wish I was there for pleasure rather than work!
Nothing - apart from the group on the next table to me for dinner!! Know-all chap holding forth on everything - lol !!
Highlights were a very comfy bed and a small but quiet and clean room with tea making ironing board TV and shower. Staff were very friendly, truly excellent food and lovely walks in surrounding rural area. Hop on a mini Reading to Henley cruise just a few minutes walk up the river. Other restaurants nearby and a small theatre round the corner!
Not much to complain about other than we though the room was a little pricey for its modest size. The shower head needed some attention as well,
loved the look of the hotel, bar and food were excellent. nice outside as well.
The bed was unbelievably noisy and unconfortable. Kept us up.
excellent food and close proximity to the thames walk
parking can be a problem
excellent, good value food breakfast in particular was terrific comfortable room with good bathroom very competent, pleasant staff lovely atmosphere
nothing I didn't like
The friendly and accomodating staff. It was just like a second home.
The wi fi need to be rebooted a lot but otherwise no problems.
Predominately adult only, although the few children we did see where made welcome it wasn't obvious that it was a child friendly place. Don't get me wrong we have our own children (10 & 4) but the whole point of our wedding anniversary was to spend it as a couple. Very comfortable as both a hotel and a pub/restaurant .
All the staff were extremely friendly and very welcoming and made our stay so enjoyable. The rooms / beds were very clean and comfortable. The quality and variety of the breakfast was excellent. All of this in a place that is packed full of character. Have already recommended to friends.
Staff helpful, food (dinner and breakfast) good ambiance in bar / restaurant good.. what more could you want .. value for money definitely
This is an excellent place to stay in every regard. Special mention must be made of the breakfast. A wide choice, cooked to order, superb quality only surpassed by the enormous quantity. You will not need lunch.
Location Building Staff Food and drinks
Ensuite was miniscule
What a great find. Just looking for a place to stay at the end of 4 weeks in the UK, a place that gave us good access to Heathrow for our departure. It is beautifully situated on the Thames, Its history is fascinating, the Building is as charming as it looks and the staff as hospitable as we have found anywhere in the UK. The Bed rooms are is style with the building and the beds very comfortable. The plumbing was very functional so a good hot shower we enjoyed. The Bar and Restaurant are right out of "Dick Turpin's" time and the food is excellent and there is a good supply of good ales wines and spirits. Breakfast was first rate and served by some very charming wait staff who made the experience most enjoyable. Next time we would stay a few days as we found ourselves just settling in when it was time to go.
The fact that we only had one night at The Bull Inn
Great staff, excellent breakfast. We had a lovely night at Bull Inn.
location, ambiance, cleanliness, food quality was excellent
Lovely location, quality breakfast, friendly reception staff , good selection of beers and wines,
Toilet stained , in need of bleach. Filthy cloth light pull over cord in bathroom generally not clean . Poor tray in bedroom, dried up coffee and chocolate in small glass jars , only two tea bags ,no milk available. Room small without drawers or wardrobe. Room very hot even with fan on, no summer quilt. Had to park two streets away, even though it said no need to book parking as plenty of room.
On rather late arrival at 9.45 pm we very much appreciated the efforts of reception and kitchen staff to provide us, out of hours, with dinner. When we had a hiccup with breakfast one morning, while we were not happy with the quality of what we ordered, nevertheless, and without us commenting with staff about this issue, that evening the restaurant manager approached us, most apologetically, about how sorry she was about this matter. Indeed she offered us an appropriate compensatory couple of drinks. We were impressed with her proactive attitude. Throughout our 4 days stay we had noticed how friendly, outgoing and helpful all the restaurant and bar staff were, along with lovely touches of humour, and we were especiaaly impressed with this given how busy they all were. And finally, when we were faced on our last day with the challenge of meeting our flight baggage restriction requirements, and travelling with over 80 kilos of stuff at the end of nearly 7 weeks vacation (lucky for some!), we cannot thank Helen enough. She seemed to be some sort of Girl Friday, popping up unexpectedly all over the place, day and night, working an extended schedule which would not have been out of place in darkest Africa or the Asian sub-continent! Furthermore, she took the initiative, and was kind enough, to bring from home a pair of scales which enabled us to switch our bagggage weight around, without which we would have been busted at check-in. She was not only most efficient but she was unceasingly good- humoured and with a wit and charm second to none. We therefore cannot say enough about the excellence of the Bull Inn staff, along with the joy of being in such a wonderful place and location.
Without being experts in the matter it seemed to us that the building was in urgent need of renovation and refurbishment. We were impressed by the building being of historical significance, and it is a pity if the charm of this pub/hotel becomes lost over time for lack of proper care and maintenance.
Age & convenience

Quaint hotel, good beer, good breakfast ( but slow service ).
