Owners and staff were very helpful and informative. We had originally booked for a twin room with private bath in the main Inn. Due to the weekend late night business/activity, the Inn owner felt we would be more comfortable in the annex section. We truly appreciated his judgement as we rested quite well. Room was very small for 2 people, but beds were quite comfortable. Our room was filthy as it had cobwebs, badly stained carpet, lots and lots of embedded dirt on baseboards, in the corners of both rooms, etc. The bathroom exhaust fan was so thick with dust, I am really surprised it did not catch on fire. I was also not a fan of owners permitting their dog in the bar/dining room as she was quite furry. One small shake of her body would leave unhealthy dog hair flying all over continental breakfast items.

Shabby room, stained furniture, lack of decent parking, stale smell walking up to room, still smelled of stale tobacco even now after cigarette ban has been in place for ages.Could do with a complete deep clean or make over, realise re decorations cost money but thorough clean and cover chairs with a clean piece of material should not be too expensive.Felt like sleeping in our car, wish we had then might have seen who put a big scratch on the side of it.Oh yes also don't take a decent car with you hire an old banger then you won't have to worry about it.

We liked the location of the hotel and for the price thought it was excellent value for money. The breakfast was very good as other reviews have stated. We ate our evening meal at The Bull and this also was very Good value for money. As a previous review says there is a constant noise of what sounds like a large extractor fan which is irritating though not bad enough to interrupt our nights sleep.

Good value pub/hotel with central small town location. Car parking good. Food fair, and reasonably priced. Ideal for business stay-over or touring in Essex. Room (in block) clean but could do with up-dating.

We loved the location of the hotel, pretty little village/town, the old style of the room, with beams etc was nice, and the breakfast was lovely the next morning, lots of choice and cooked really well. Good value for money The bathroom let it down, the toilet was so close to the wall, that you had to sit sideways on it!! The bathroom really does need a bit of decoration, not looking for luxury at the price it was, but it could have been a bit cleaner as well

Loved the building from the historic point of view. Food good, staff polite and efficient. . Bedroom was 'tired' and in need of some tlc '. One real negative was the incessant background electric pump type noise which was not condusive to a good nights sleep. This matter was raised with the receptionist on checking out.

The staff were friendly, the price was good and the bed was comfy. The double room we had was abit shabby: towel rail partly falling off the bathroom wall, mould in the bathroom - generally looked like it needed a bit of work doing to it. The breakfast was good, but staff are busy tidying up after the night before / hoovering etc, abit off-putting / not a relaxing start to the day.

When checking in my card details were taken and and £50 deposit was taken without it being explained(i thought i was paying for the room upfront). We were given no information on where the room was - i had to ask. We were also given no information regarding where and when to receive breakfast in the morning. Our room was directly above the function room with extremely loud music. When laying on the bed in the room you could feel the bed vibrating and actually hear and see the fixtures vibrating due to the music. At 10pm my partner went down to reception to ask when the party was due to finish and explained the problem. We were told that loud music was commonplace in such a venue and that the receptionist would ask the DJ to turn the music down (i did not notice a difference at all). On checkout, i expressed my disatisfaction, received no empathy and a very fake apology. We had still not received any infomation regarding breakfast but after such a bad nights sleep my partner and i could not wait to leave.

“I have never felt so welcomed and looked after at any hotel I have stayed in as I did by the staff here. Relaxed atmosphere, clean, a good breakfast and close enough to Freeport Braintree or Stansted for those with other agendas. If I had to give a percent score for the staff here they really would score 100% for their Customer Service!” Karen, Ipswich |
