Room 217 was located directly outside was the hotels central heating systems with noise and fan from the motors buzzing constantly. Room location has to be one of the worst - I do not recommend staying in this room. If you are ask to be moved, I wish I had!

The hotel was excellent value and the room was lovely and spacious. I had to wait 50 minutes to check-in as there were no rooms ready. I arrived at the hotel at 2:15pm and didn't get into a room until after 3pm. The guy on the desk was very apologetic and kept phoning housekeeping. They apparently said they would let him know when one was ready but he only found out when he phoned yet again. I wouldn't normally mind too much but I had a meeting at 4pm at the University so was running short of time.

This is the previous Midland Hotel from the days when rail travel was for those that could afford it. It is elegant - going on majestic - refurbished and gleaming. We had Room 420 - a Junior Suite - very reasonable as we booked in advance - it was fabulous - lots of period charm - even an open fire grate/surround - and an 8' bed !!! The whole hotel was clean. I repeat - the whole hotel was clean. So many are not. Our room had flat screen TV, trouser press, iron and board, good hair dryer, electronis safe, mini bar and fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, free WiFi or wire. What more do you want. The staff were terrific. Nothing more to be said. Terrific. The hotel has the "Scottish Steak Club" restaurant - it is VERY good - and has special offers. Beautiful decor - excellent service - good menu - and clearly a really good chef - all for a very reasonable price. Why go to other 'chain' restaurants and pubs that give you food micro-waved from a plastic bag ? The wine prices here were enough - but that's life - at least they were good wines. They were doing building works/refurbishments while we were there - but its good that they continue to invest in the property - and the builders didn't make any noise after 5 pm. The location is dead central. Look at the map. We are very picky people - but we had a truly great time at this hotel - and we want everyone to know it.

It is a beautiful hotel, perfectly situated. Our room was spacious, and everything else up to expectations. The bits of mould in the shower - from experience I know how tough it can be, but use Dettol Mould & Mildew Remover and it will remove the toughest of moulds.
