This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.

Good-sized room, very nice bathroom, very clean and well decorated.
Our room faced the A4, so it was a bit noisy, but managed to sleep all right. Bathroom door wouldn't shut properly.
Flew into Heathrow on route to Cornwall. This hotel was a great place to break the journey. Just off the M4 but far enough away from the damn thing.
Very relaxing weekend. We have been coming for many years now. Look forward to next year.
Friendliness of the staff and the tastefull breakfast
Having to barge through wedding guests on their "cannot wait to have a fag break" to access reception. Although it didn't affect us others in our group were kept awake by loud arguments and bad language from the wedding guests in the early hours
The hotel is very convenient for the M4 and central Reading. Staff are polite, friendly and attentive. The quality of food on offer in the restaurant is very good.
Unfortunately, our room was in part of the hotel which is due for improvement. Due to very poor sound-proofing at present, our sleep on two nights was seriously disturbed by noise from the room above.
the whole package was done very professionally and Andrew and his co-worker (sorry I cannot remember her name) were very attentive and helped us sort out a few 'issues'. well done to them both
Cleanness, confort of the hotel was great.
FRIENDLY STAFF VERY EFFICIENT BREAKFAST SITTING WITH GOOD & VARIED MENU CHOICE.
VERY TIRED & DATED DECOR AND FACILITIES. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BED WHICH SHOULD BE A MASSIVE PRIORITY. SOMEWHAT BOUTIQUE BATHROOM.
everything as below average in quality / space / bed was small room was small ect
The location was good in relation to our offices in Theale.
There was a plastic mattress protector on the bed that kept me awake and I did not have a good nights sleep. The staff in the restaurant were not very attentive
restaurant well designed. Good food and service
The bed was so narrow we had an appalling night's sleep. The wash basin was cracked and towel rail falling off the wall. Loud traffic noise completed the bad night.
Was able to check in early. Friendly & helpful receptionist. Good location for a wedding I was attending. Nothing to complain about.
staff were good
didn't like beds sink plug wouldn't open the bath was badly stained
The ambience was pleasant and professional. We arrived late in the evening after a long day's driving and had to check out early for a London business appointment. The room was very comfortable and quiet, and the staff were flawlessly helpful. The breakfast was most acceptable.
No complaints at all.
Convenient for town, and on main route.
Lack of lift
Radiator did not heat up until the second night when the daytime temperatures hadn't bern so low to make the room chilly, but everything else was excellent
No dislikes. Staff friendly, helpful, food was excellent too. On first night the poor young bar Girl was by herself and overworked. She still managed to be helpful And smile
Food in restaurant was tasty and reasonably priced.
Noise at night from adjoining rooms and corridors. Acoustic insulation seems poor. This materially affected sleep on one of the 2 nights I stayed.
quiet and good location. Pleasant staff. Easy access to rooms with luggage and simple to move around between car park, bar, dining room and room.
Could have done with some water in the room as our stay coincided with a humid night. Would have liked ability to cool down the room.
My wife (Deborah Fatile) and I stayed in room number 23 from the 16th to the 18th September. The room was clean and comfortable and this is the first hotel that I can remember where the room had been comfortably heated. Our visit was to bring my younger stepdaughter who lives near the hotel home, she had been convalescing with us after surgery. A thing that amused me was that I saw a message in the bathroom asking us to reuse the towels, however having left the ‘Please Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door handle we were surprised to find a set of clean towels left for us. All of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. We had an excellent dinner on the 16th and great breakfasts on both mornings. Our visit coincided with my wife’s birthday so on the evening of the 17th her daughters took us to a local pub for a meal, unfortunately we ended up wishing that we had dined with you. Michael E. Poor access too many steps to enter the reception.
The rooms were lovely and comfortable and fairly quiet at night.
Condiments were a bit thin with limited tea, coffee and expecially milk. With only one pack of two tiny biscuits to share. The window didnt shut properly in room 88. The handle wouldn't lock. Needs a little updating.
Nice grounds, lovely comfortable room made good use of the space for a single room. Great staff from reception to those who served breakfast. I would stay there again.
Slight issues with a couple of elements of chosen meals but that was more to do with the food suppliers rather than the way it was cooked. When highlighted to staff they didn't seem to know how to answer my questions relating to the issues therefore didn't.
The cosiness of the hotel, the staff is extremely nice and pleasant, helpful, and friendly.
Convenience and price. Comfortable room.
Only issue this visit was sloping shelf in bathroom! Could not use it.
Staff friendly and professional Upgraded room Clean well maintained room
Taxi cost to Reading station
While working away from home and dining alone, you always feel akward. Not here, the staff make you feel most welcome.
The fact I didn't find this place earlier, in my six week contract
