Set within acres of wooded parkland, this fascinating 13th century fortress is on the banks of the River Esk.

The ambiance and the friendly staff. We felt like home.Planning to revisit and stay in june.
Library and rest decorated in the old style
Rooms modern and small restaurant not able to fit all guests for the dinner. You need to book well in advance. The nearest restaurant 1 mile ahead, free transport but average food. Hotel restaurant decor - white box with white clothed tables. Disappointing.
The history, setting, features, luxury, it was a real pleasure and I look forward to returning in the winter to sit in front of one of their many open fires.
No room service
It was nothing special
No evening meal without prior booking before 5 pm. This is not mentioned on their web site and is apparently a change from last year. Be warned if you are planning to arrive later! Dining room staff willing but poorly trained. Expensive for what is offered. The owners are trying to offer a luxury experience in a genuinely old house but have not got there yet.
nice building and gardens
information at breakfast very poor so missed cooked food.
Amazing castle nearby Edinburgh with beautiful suites; friendly staff.
No Wifi signal in the rooms.
Loved the staff -everyone was very kind. Loved everything about the building. Loved the breakfast, especially the haggis.
That there was no food available as snack, or sandwich, only the special three course meal at night.and we could not go in the bar for a hot chocolate after we came back from the Tattoo.
Classy place. Exceptional attention to detail. Remarkable history and wonderful historic building.
Limited dining options for remotely located facility. Need tosupport transportation options; even if a cost required.
it's a castle, the building, garden and furniture inside is lovely, great atmosphere! I liked all the roooms, especially the library! The staff was nice and professional, food was excelent, I will come once again there!
there was nothing bad there!
Quiet Location, grounds were beautiful and a good place for kids to run around after a long drive. Comfortable beds and nice clean rooms.
Rooms on the small side when traveling with children. Grounds were nice, but bathtub is left in the garden for weddings and parties which had old rubbish left in it and some old party evidence like mini wine bottles etc left laying around the grounds which was a shame spoiling the scenery. Limited breakfast.
Staff where friendly.
Unable to use restaurant unless booked in advance, wasn't aware when booking. Size of room. Overpriced for what you get.
superb room, friendly staff, great experience. Worth the walk through the wood to see the monument marking where Mary Queen of Scots abdicated.
having to leave
Lovely setting, beautiful house and grounds and within a reasonable drive of the city. Very friendly staff.
Disappointed not to be able to eat in house on the night I was there (too late to book for the restaurant and no bar menu) but the nearby Mercat Grill (walking distance) served great food.
Great property with superb lounges and toms. Excellent meal service from Ruby
Poor quality breakfast for quality hotel more 2 star! Late night wedding noise but hotel do not choose all the guests
Very friendly and helpfull staff throughout our one night stay
The staff said yes to all our request . Very geniun castle with a feel of history.
Very well maintained and comfortable castle and grounds. Common areas were spectacular. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The room was a bit small, particulary the bathroom which was tiny. Very nicely decorated, modern and clean however.
Location, surrounding gardens, big old purple tree
Price of drinks, lack of breakfast choice and service
Setting friendly an efficient staff
Unfortunately there was a wedding on the evening which went on to late and kept us both awake
Whole place first class
Accommodating staff, very attentive, gorgeous facility, comfortable room & beds. A little remote but the lovely grounds are a treat. I will make this one of my return to places. Horseback riding would have been a nice option but they have many other activities in which to participate.
The internet did not work in the rooms and there was no shower curtain.
Kirsty on reception, who was very helpful. The grounds which were expansive and had a lot of history. The room which was comfortable yet full of old world charm.
The price £210 in total for a single room and two drinks, with no food.
Location is perfect. Dinner was super testy
Location is great. Staff were very friendly.
Only leaving. We enjoyed our stay.
Room, hotel layout, grounds.
Thought the Fine Dining Experience quite disappointing. Limited choice of food, my wife didn't want the aperatif on offer so we were charged extra for an alternative, we would have preferred the option of sitting alone (there was only one other couple dining that night and although very nice people, we didn't have a lot in common). You could do much better with this.
