The Castle Arms Hotel is a former 19th Century coaching inn, situated 8 miles from John O'Groats, in the village of Mey. It is the nearest hotel to Gills Ferry to Orkney Isles, only a short distance from the Queen Mother's Highland home, the Castle of Mey. Set on 6 acres of open land adjacent to the North of Scotland's principal tourist route, it is ideally placed to cater for vacationers and travelers to Orkney. Dog friendly, with extensive dog walking areas. Hotel Rooms: 8

It was snug and just as I required for what I was there for, the evening meal was good, but slightly disappointed with breakfast after reading other reviews but it still satisfied, the heating in the room was on and we were cosy. Checked my full bill on getting home and I had bought someone else a pint - but thats hospitality; no problems with that this time. My fault really

Fabulous views and setting near the Castle of May. The dining room and bedroom were very nicely appointed with all you could need including electric blankets. Plus our dog was welcome (providing she did not sleep on the bed!!!). Despite all the effort that had been put into the facilities, it was all let down by the service and inexperienced staff. Plus the food left much to be desired ( may be we chose the wrong things!!) and don't ask for anything that is not on the menu! Is this the only place in Scotland where you are refused porridge for breakfast? I could say more but they had tried hard and a little more effort would have made this place truly excellent given their situation.

Nice room, Good food and you can choose between pub style area, or more formal restaurant area. Good beds, with electric heating under blanket. Nice owner and his wife. He looks like Columbo detective and is very enthousiatic about all kinds of features the hotel/room has.

Friedliness of welcome, and homeliness of staff; good, wholesome food, reasonably priced. It was of no consequence for us but we were unable to get apicture on our television having followed the instructions we were given. Also it was a rather small tv, but it did not bother us at all.

The staff were very very friendly and accomodating even going as far as not charging us for the last night of the stay as we had to leave early. The food in the restaraunt was lovely and really good value for money. The breakfast was quite basic for a vegetarian

Excellent location for visiting the Castle of Mey and north coastal region (and Orkney). Staff courteous and friendly. Room very satisfactory. Restaurant excellent for breakfast and evening meal. We cannot understand why this hotel has only two stars!

The staff were friendly and the food was good. However our room in the annexe was badly in need of updating and the shower/wet room had broken tiles on the floor with mould growing between cracks. The room was cold at night - 3rd week in June Annexe rooms very dark abnd not up to standard

Very welcoming & good food: fully outweighs the slightly dated facilities in the otherwise ok bedroom (1960s electric kettle, oldish tv). Would fully recommend this hotel to anyone not obsessed with the contemporary scene. Well matches the spirit of the Castle of May.

We had a wonderful nights stay. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly. We had a couple of cold pints at the bar before dinner which hit the spot after a long day of driving. The dinner was satisfying and just what we needed before heading to bed. Breakfast was also very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful and when we told them our route they suggested some great places to stop in on the way. All in all a very good stay.

The owner and staff were great, I liked where the room was located it was joined on to the main building meaning you come and go as you pleased at any time day or night. The rooms were a bit dated but does that really matter as long as they are clean which they were.

I would put it down to experience. It was certainly different. The hotel staff were very entertaining. This hotel is very basic. The annex smelt rather fusty we were not sure when it had last been occupied. We stayed here because we visited The Casle of Mey.
