Good,

This family hotel with excellent food enjoys the quiet seclusion and charm of a traditional Westmorland village, with magnificent views of the Norman castle and the surrounding Pennines. Set in rural Cumbria, there is plenty to see and visit in the area. The hotel’s central position makes it an ideal base for exploring Herriot Country, the Howgills, Eden and the Lakes. This is our second visit and although out of season and undergoing some refurbishment and with a staff shortage the service did not suffer. The food was varied and of a high standard whether snack or main meal. As some rooms are above the bar you must be prepared for some noise and possibly till late, though this may be at weekends only and could be quieter through the week. Dogs are welcome and the hotel is a good base for walkers and tourist.

Warm welcome and clean room. Good food with pleasant staff We did have to wait for our room even though we did not arrive until mid afternoon but the room was very clean. No easy access to power for kettle.

The meal in the evening was O.K. so was the breakfast, although we did have to wake up the lad who was to cook it. We only stayed one night thank goodness. When we arrived at around 5.30p.M. the bedroom was not even ready, so we sat in the bar for about 30 minutes. The girl was cleaning the bar floor, although she did her best to be cheerful. The bathroom was clean although the wallpaper was hanging off the wall and their was a hole in the plaster under the window. The bed was comfortable, but could not get the T.V. to work. We had ordered our breakfast for 8.30a.M. to enable us to have a reasonable start for Scotland. There did not seem to be anyone at all in the Hotel, so I rang the front door bell, which woke up the boy who was to cook our breakfast. The diningroom tables had not be cleaned from previous meals. All in all I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. It needs more than re-furbishment, it needs total reorganisation and someone to look after paying guests.

In fairness they did give me a free drink whilst they got my room ready. When I arrived (at 5pm) the room was not ready and I had to wait half an hour for the room to be prepared. The tv in the room did not work and the window would not shut properly. The room was quite tired and in need of refurbishing, it was clean but there were a number of spiders in corners and the bath. They were not doing food the evening I arrived, but they advertise food on the board outside. I asked for breakfast at 8am and was told this would be fine, at 8 the place looked deserted and nobody turned up until 8.20 after I had rung the call bell a number of times. I needed to get to work at this point and I was pretty fed up so I cancelled the 2nd night and just paid for the first. They had the cheek to charge for breakfast, but I had run out of time to argue the charge.

A atenção dispensada pelo funcionário que nos atendeu. Infelizmente, ficamos num quarto que o sinal da internet não nos alcançava. Somente no saguão.

Staff were friendly and helpful The room would benefit from attention: bathroom door would not close, tv did not have adequate reception, water in shower/bath was only lukewarm

The hotel was very informal and relaxed. All staff were brilliant - attentive but not over the top. Room and bathroom spacious. Shower very powerful. Hotel was perfect for our needs on this occasion. Food portions were huge - excellent value for money.

Food was excellent a surprise. The hotel was only used due to location as a stop over from a holiday in Scotland. And price was in accordance with the hotel would not have paid any more. Hotel needs an upgrade but I suppose the recession and location limits the funding to do this. Overall was adequate that's all.
