The food was terrible, the service mediocre, and the quality of the fixtures and fittings was prehistoric. The electrics in the room were Heath Robinson to say the least, it was impossible to find switches for lights, there were extension cords that looked dodgy to me. The windows were not double glazed, and there was a terrible draft constantly. If you rang reception to ask for something, no one answered.

I only came for one night in order to attend a funeral, but I was made as welcome as if I was staying for longer. The room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean with tea-making facilities and bathroom amenities. I had an excellent night's rest in a very comfortable bed! The location is excellent, being near the train/bus station and taxi service as well as a variety of good shops. All staff were very pleasant and helpful. It was a pity my visit was so short as I did not get the opportunity to sample the variety of food on offer in the restaurant. However, all my friends lunch there regularly and recommend it highly, so if/when I return to Merthyr Tydfil I will make sure I return to the Castle Hotel.

The location was excellent, free parking up the road. All staff I met were great, and the food in the hotel was very good especially the curry. Wifi available throughout though, and at a good speed. Rooms are a little dated, and could do with a little modernising. But everything worked and bed was very comfy.

Free WiFi. Informative Staff. Central location near amenities such as shops, cash points, take-aways. Inexpensive. Local parking was cheap (£3.50 / 24 hours). Room was adjacent to a chimney with marked odour pervading room despite closed windows if windows opened smoke came straight into room. Room very dusty & not cleaned properly from previous guests - debris on floor. Mattress like concrete + 1 pillow per person. WiFi very slow and access to certain services like msn messenger barred. No fridge in room. Tv on wall bracket tilted at angle. Insufficient electrical points. Parking some distance from hotel. Significant unidentifiable stains on walls & peeling wallpaper. Rooms look nothing like they do in website pictures.

The shower in my room was broken, water was spraying everywhere from the hose section of the shower, and basically unusable. The hotel should not have let anyone stay in that room as it was faulty!

Its location. Its owners - very friendly. The room, bed and bathrrom were very clean and tidy. Smoking room did not have exhaust fan, so there was no ventilation. It was suffocating. Intercom phone was not working Most of the electric sockets were not working - had to disconnect tv to use the kettle (to heat water) or charge mobile.
