“ loved the atmosphere and location in the heart of Canterbury with beautiful views of the cathedral. Loved the history of the building itself and its charm. ”

In the heart of Canterbury, set in an historic 1438 building, is the cathedral Gate Hotel. Rooms have modern amenities and some offer spectacular views of the cathedral. Steeped in history, the cathedral Gate’s medieval construction can be seen in the wooden beams, sloping floors and low doorways. Once slept in by pilgrims, the hotel even predates the adjoining Cathedral Gateway. Evocative, restored rooms have modern facilities, and all come with TVs, hairdryers, telephones and tea/coffee making facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas of the hotel. Just steps from the bustling Buttermarket and the cathedral Precincts, the high street shops and restaurants are a short walk away. Located in the pedestrianized center of town, both Canterbury Train Stations are within a 10-minute walk. The location is superb, and the staff were really excellent: friendly, polite & helpful. It's wonderful staying in a medieval building with sloping floors, uneven ceilings, and steep stairs, and the Cathedral right by my window. Wonderful!. Nothing much not to like. But you need to be prepared for staying in a medieval building with sloping floors, uneven ceilings, and steep stairs. These didn't bother me, but I can imagine some tourists complaining till the end of days.

The staff were very friendly (they found me a newspaper because I was travelling alone; the person at the check-in desk lent me his mobile phone charger because I had forgotten mine). Wasn't a fan of the last staircase (which only had a rope for support). I understand they are going to renovate though.

Excellent, central location - fantastic to be so much a part of the city and the cathedral. Lots of pubs and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Family room ( Barn ) was comfortable, spacious, warm and all worked well. No noise at night and just the Cathedral bells in the morning. We paid quite a high price, which, for the standard of accommodation was more than I would expect. However, the ease and convenience of the location and the helpfulness of the staff made up for this.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The building is 15 century and very quaint and compact. It was very warm despite freezing cold weather outside We stayed in the Nightingale room and the bed could have been more comfortable especially for those with bad backs. The shower and its water pressure needs to be improved. Having a shower at -1 with hardly any water over your body is not enjoyable but it makes for a short shower! There was a separate basin in the bedroom that worked well. A mirror for the hair dryer would have been handy

The history of the house and friendliness of the staff. I enjoyed being so close to the Cathedral. The breakfast was excellent, including the coffee. Plentybofmpubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk. Walking over the roof to my room - I was glad it wasn't raining. The shower was poor. There seemed a lot of noise - the central heating (which I turned off), students in the early hours and road sweepers first thing. But I had my ear plugs, and would go again.

The Staff were welcoming and friendly. The location of this hotel in the heart of Canterbury is appealing, although the noise from the early morning road sweepers and trucks make the central location less desirable. The room was in desparate need of bringing into the 21st century. The bedding was quite appalling - blankets in disgraceful condition, although the sheets were clean. The room was cold and dingy. The kettle could only be plugged in just behind the bed, and placed on the floor to boil, making it somewhat dangerous. The sash cord in the window was broken and paint work generally grubby and chipped. The price of the accomodation was extortionate for the facilities which it provided, especially considering that one had to pay extra for a mediocre cooked breakfast. The pleasant staff were the only redeeming feature of this hotel. Given the number of negative comments made by previous reviewers, the managment clearly do not care what their customers think, as no improvement in facilities has taken place in at least the last 30 years, which is when I last stayed there! They clearly rely on the fact that the central location will attract visitors. Sadly I suspect for many people, this will be a one off visit. I shall certainly spend my money more wisely in the future, by going somewhere else - which offers some comfort and value for money.

The room was clean and the breakfast was lovely, one of the best hotel breakfasts I have had. The rooms need some updating, the carpets were worn out and the shower needed de-scaling.

Nice central location Our room was very cold when we arrived on one of the coldest days of the year, the radiator was turned off and the old sash windows were open but even when closed were very draughty. There was a fire door next to our room and there was light all around it (very ill fitting) so even the passage was cold.

The old worlde feel to the hotel. Back to basics maybe but oh so relaxing and quaint. A feel of yesteryear, quite in keeping with the cobbled streets of Canterbury! The shower was very basic and shower room was cold (brrrr). But this was due to the shape of the very old building that couldn't be helped and that we so admired.

My room overlooked the Cathedral, so lovely to hear the bells on Sunday morning and see the sun shining! The staff were friendly and helpful. You can leave your luggage in storage there. The breakfast was simple but freshly made and tasty (lovely fresh fruit salad and hot toast). A hotel of character rather than luxury, hence the price, but the welcome was warm. I could only find one shared toilet on my floor which didn't lock very well. The hotel is slightly shabby, the wiring looks a bit dodgy. My bed was old and sagged in the middle although I did sleep well. The furniture and carpet is 'shabby chic', bit like staying at your gran's 50 years ago! In the night everything slid off the table next to my bed (including my glass of water) due to the sloping floor! Very quaint though!

City centre location Friendly and helpful staff Breakfast delivered to your room Quirky old building Difficult to drag heavy bags through corridors and up and down steep stairs which would not be practical for elderly or people with a lot of luggage but it added to our stay as it was quite quirky! And it's a pretty old building so sort of expected.

Staff very friendly and helpful - carrying bags, providing information, having the time to chat. Lovely. A good-looking hotel, medieval, with beams, sloping floors. A pretty little sitting room for general use and a roof garden overlooking the cathedral. Spectacular! The breakfast was very good with a freshly prepared multi-fruit salad and coffee in individual cafetieres. Shared facilities are never as good as en-suite but we knew what we had booked and it was a cheaper option, so there we are! Noisy outside our room on a Saturday night, but again we knew it was likely, Canterbury being a student town, but the hotel helpfully provides ear plugs and in fact we both slept very well in the comfortable beds.

room was clean but could benefit from an up date in decor, furnishings etc. none of the electrical appliances in our room worked. t.v, radio or kettle. we did report this on arrival but nothing was done. plus we could not lock our door from the inside. when we reported this to reception we were asked if we wold like to be locked in. Not a good idea should there be a fire!

loved the atmosphere and location in the heart of Canterbury with beautiful views of the cathedral. Loved the history of the building itself and its charm. There is nothing that could be improved upon given the age of the building and the drawbacks that come with staying in historic buildings. For example, bathrooms are shared and small. Staircases are narrow. Yet, this adds to the charm and should not be changed!
