From turning up in our car to have it valet parked, to the concierge opening the doors for us to an amazing reception area, we felt so spoiled.
To the fruit bowl in reception, to the speakers in the shower room, to the Molton Brown toiletries and to the spa with their huge dressing gowns, we were in love.
Each evening we went swimming and both of these evenings there were a maximum of 3 people in the whole spa at the same time!
We loved the peacefulness down there and both had a treatment each in the couples room, which we loved.
The staff were professional at all times and couldn't do enough to help. They knew what they were doing and it wasn't your standard 1, 2, 3 you're done.
We did enjoy our stay, it's just a shame to have experienced the negative parts. We were offered the choice to speak to a manager, but we felt that maybe we would not have been taken too seriously and as we had a 3.5hr journey back home, we didn't have the time to just hang around complaining!
There were a few things that would bring my scoring down the hotel.
1. Our room was BOILING, even with the air conditioning blowing the highest and coolest, it was still very, very warm. We did notify the reception on the first morning but unfortunately the turndown for that evening also included them turning the heat all the way up to 24c! This made for an uncomfortable evening.
2. Two single beds pushed together meant we couldn't really get hugely comfortable. Although I'm sure there was some sort of cover over the two mattresses, we could still feel the ridge quite obviously and this ruined our romantic stay somewhat.
3. We were woken up on our first morning very early, after the hope of a lay in, to about 10 mins worth of high pitched squealing which we believe may have been pipes. I'm sure the building is quite old but unfortunately that is not our problem and we feel quite put off that we were placed into a room where this must have been complained about before.
4. On our last day, we were enjoying a drink in the bar. We asked one of the bar staff if they could recommend a nice pub on the way back home. She couldn't, and went to get one of the concierge staff.
He came over to us and gave one suggestion, no hello or smile, completely grumpy and so unhelpful, then walked off before we'd been able to ask for more information.
This same member of staff also 'helped' us leave the hotel, by keeping us waiting for 10 minutes for our car, by helping other people before us even though we had been first in the 'queue'. Even though we were speaking to him, he ignored everything we said without even so much as a chuckle or comment.
When 'helping' us with our bags he only carried one out of 6 bags to the car. My partner had to carry the rest and he even had the cheek to hang around as if waiting for a tip.
We jokingly said to the receptionist that he is a bit grumpy, her response was 'He's done this job for years'.
