Food was great Sunday was nice but midweek menu was excellent. About tops cost wise but worth it. Staff all pleasant and bed very comfy. Bathrooms....I Had a bath with shower over. Shower was really hopeless just a dribble.Hence bath took forever to fill My friend had a room with shower no bath taps and ended up having to move rooms. Shame...lovely beds very comfy nice rooms nice bar Great food...just need to sort the bedrooms

Charles Cotton was beautifully located in the small village of Hartington. The rooms were clean and warm. The bed was not comfortable but rather too hard with a mattress that had seen better days as the springs were a little too obvious. The shower did not work in either of the 2 rooms we booked and the staff made no apology for this. Breakfast was overpriced with poor quality food and preparation - my daughter's egg were a little on the raw side. For the price I would have expected homemade preserves and bread rather than supermarket prepacked bread etc. Coffee and tea were were poorly prepared and there was little choice. Cereals were low standard. Croissants not warmed. Service was adequate but not warm or friendly. Wifi in the hotel was not avilable other than in the bar area.

Really enjoyed a weekend break with girlfriends whilst walking in the Dales. The food was excellent, staff friendly and helpful. Accomodation clean and comfortable and set apart from the hotel ensuring less noise disturbance.Could easily recommend this hotel to others.

Very tranquil setting in a quiet village. Busy bar in the evening. Friendly staff. Nice breakfast. Within easy drive to lovely walks and also walks from the doorstep of hotel. Menu was a bit too posh with only one vegetarian meal with none of the usual choices of a bar meal. Bathroom and shower cubicle were a bit dated and water only Luke warm in the shower. Dining room and residents lounge very dated.

I was disappointed that wifi was not available in the room and was very limited in the bar area. This was particularly important as there was no phone signal in the village either.

Relaxing family break with beautifull surounding countryside walks and activities for everyone. The bed was wondefully large and very confortable. In the family room for 4 the hot water system is not sufficient for everyone to have a bath. A wait of around 1 and a half hours is required to refill it after someone has had a bath.

Nice location in a thriving village with easy access to local walks and nearby towns. Plenty of parking and outdoor seating in good weather. Very comfortable matress. Waiting staff charming. Small but good selection of wines by the glass. Inattention to detail in the restaurant: small niggles like mashed potato with all dishes instead of the advertised bubble and squeak or celeriac mash. Cream tea not achievable because our waiter couldn't find the cream in the kitchen, though offered to try and concoct something with some 'runny'' cream. Limited dinner menu (less attractive than the specimen menu in our bedroom info folder) on offer with our B&B status, though our fellow guests seemed to be offered completely different food (perhaps a table d'hote menu - but why weren't we offered the alternative option). Breakfast: sachets of mustard were at odds with the trendy-pub style of the hotel and weak cona coffee could perhaps be improved with replacement by individual cafetieres.

The bar and restaurant staff were extremely friendly and cooperative. The food was excellent and when asked to change something on the menu we were told it would be no problem. Excellent breakfast. There was no water in the rooms when we arrived and the pillows were uncomfortable. I was disappointed when asking to use the phone, as there was no signal available for mobile phones, we were asked to contribute to the cost. I felt that it would have been covered by the high charge of the room!

We liked the food, evening meal excellent, and my partner enjoyed his full English breakfast, I opted for the Continental, which included fresh fruit salad. Our request for extra strong coffee was fulfilled. 60s pop songs in the bar, which could be heard in the restaurant. As our bedroom window faced east and had rather thin curtains we were awoken by the sunlight at 7.00 am.

The room and dining area were satisfactory but...... ..... on the first night, we were kept awake by live music from the bar until well after midnight. The next night started the same but thankfully finished earlier but in any case, the rooms were not fitted with telephones and so to complain would have meant getting dressed and having to walk to the main building. The hotel is dog-friendly but the pet in the room below us barked loudly every time that someone walked by. The breakfasts were adequate but no more. The evening meals may have been better but they were so expensive that we dined at the Devonshire Arms down the road which served excellent food at average prices and was staffed by pleasant and helpful people. I would only recommend the Charles Cotton Hotel to dog-owners and lovers of 1960s music. I believe that the owners need to decide whether they are running a pub (and providing entertainment) or a hotel (and providing quiet rooms and affordable food).

Nice lady who served breakfast Very disappointing. Not even any hot water or heating in the morning and they didn't even apologise. Main course at dinner was poor. Smaller room size and hotel than I expected for the price.
