Quite a few things on the Bistro menu weren't available.
The look of the hotel.
constant Creeking of floor above, duck tape all over the towel rail, dirty sheets, constant droning noise all night to the point of frustration and tears, had to put the fan on in the room all night to drown out the other noise and still heard it with ear plugs in. staff saying they can't refund my breakfast I hadn't yet had because the manager wasn't in but then I told them of the nights events in the room and then all of a sudden were able to authorise the refund. I will never stay there again and will be writing a review elsewhere.
Room 124 was reserved by one member of staff as I asked for a large room because of my claustrophobia then the room number was confirmed the next day by a male member of staff when I rang but on arrival the room number had been changed to 120 and the receptionist new nothing of the "special request" and said room 120 is the same size when the first receptionist I spoke with to give the "special request" was working on our departure said she could not understand why it was changed and that 124 is bigger ?.
Lots of character, spacious rooms.
There was a very noisy boiler which meant we had to change rooms in the middle of the night.
Due to a persistent noise from the kitchen we had to request to be moved to another room in the early hours of the morning as it interrupted any chance of sleep.
Breakfast - especially the lovely lady Jo, who served us and took an interest in us all. Apologies for the banter Jo, but we really enjoyed meeting you again!!
The bar area has been significantly reduced in size and we had to have a drink in the corridor down the hall from reception...... not really welcoming! Bedrooms a little tired and perhaps a regular vacuum under the beds would be nice? A good deep clean in the bathrooms wouldn't go amiss.... The carpets are all a little tired, and generally the hotel needs a paint job...... both inside and outside...
Proximity to my itinary and close to local amenities
Poor greeting, or barely noticed from reception and bar, old bathroom, hair in bath tub, noise from the traffic, struggle to find room location...unclear!
the size of the room , the location to town centre.
the room temperature was too hot. The bathroom temperature was too hot. The window rattled all night. The breakfast wAs over priced. And the walk to the room wS too long from reception.
We ere glad to see the Hotel after a long journey from Holland, and we did like the nice frontside of the hotel. The street was pretty busy with traffic. Plenty of nice parking places at the back of the hotel.
We had good weather (september 2014) and it was too warm in our room. Also the traffic in the street was sometimes tooo noisy to open the windows (our room was at the street side).
Proximaty to town, ample parking, friendly staff, large clean room with comfy beds.
Creaky floorboards! Radio playing in bar instead of continuous music.
Very comfortable bed, the room was clean and facilities were good. We received a warm welcome from helpful staff. Good location near the high street but away from noise.
Corridors really need decorating as they look very shabby. However, the room itself was lovely - despite some wallpaper peeling!
Room was spacious
Noisy floor boards
Good service and reasonable prices.
Some areas in need of decoration and refurbishment.
bedroom car park
no lift inability of breakfast manager to do what I asked. late entry night arrangements
The first night I set off the alarm while trying to run a bath. Management came running into the room and opened all the windows. The alarm was very sensitive and the extractor fan in the bathroom did not work well . I was told to leave all the windows while bathing. Not a good experience. Mandy S.A.
Location to downtown Newbury and proximity to Downton Abbey's Highclare Castle Staff friendliness Big bathroom
Hot rooms Squeaky bed Breakfast not included in room rate
Very comfortable bed and clean room . very quiet and central for towns facilities .
noisy room, not very clean
I stayed at the Chequers Hotel while visiting my sister as she has just had a baby so really just used it as a place to sleep and have breakfast but found it an excellent stay. The staff were very friendly and went that extra mile to help. The rooms were very clean and up to date with a good bathroom. The breakfast was excellent, although was a little awkward on Sunday, where rather than having separate tables and ordering, there was only four large tables that sat 12 and the breakfast ran as a buffet. As a person on their own it made it uncomfortable.
As has been mentioned on other reviews the corridors are in need of a lick of paint and new carpets. However, I would rather it be the corridors than the room that needed updating. The rooms were excellent. Very happy overall and will go again when I visit my sister. In fact have recommended it to my parents for when they visit.
All round value for money
Cosmetic updates in progress which are needed
The breakfast was exceptionally good for the price! The shower had a really good pressure! The room was nice, clean and big.
The carpets on the corridor seemed a little run down. This gave a bad first impression and we were wondering why they don't replace them...
the staff were very friendly and helpful could not fault at all rooms were clean although not luxurious very satisfied
limitations on menu for dinner bed and breakfast package were not told we would have a small allowance for dinner thought quite expensive for menu provided in package.
The staff were so attentive and it made all the difference. I had a dripping tap and fidelity heating but all were addressed within minutes. I would definitely stay again! Loved the big car park, too!
Little bit chilly in my room at first... But was soon addressed. The maintenance team were outstanding and reception, too. Please pass on my congratulations....
