Weston Super Mare
In the heart of Newbury, only 5 minutes from highway M4, exit 13, this traditional 18th century coaching inn offers free parking. Now independently owned, the Chequers Hotel has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment of the outside of the building, including brand new windows. The only hotel that is so close the center of Newbury, the Chequers is close to all that the town has to offer, including the many shops, bars and restaurants. Newbury Train Station is about 0.5 miles away. The 56 well-furnished rooms with private bathrooms are fully equipped with tea/coffee makers, hairdryers, suit presses, TVs, telephones and modem points. Warm and welcoming, the restaurant serves modern European cuisine and the bar also offers a wide selection of hot and cold dishes daily. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Subject to availability, guests have the use of the LA Fitness gym, just a few minutes away. Hotel Rooms: 56

Lovely hotel, lovely room with a comfortable bed. I booked a single and got a small double, nice. The full english breakfast was a small portion but nice, there was also a selection to choose from. Hotel is beside shops although not many. Receptionist very helpfull, booked us a taxi to get us to the racecourse. There is no lift and quite a quite a steep staircase but staff will carry your case up to your room for you. I would reccomend this hotel and will stay again if ever I am at Newbury again.

The room was large and very warm. Bedding was very clean. No lifts and a little awkward to get around. It could do with same T.L.C.

The non-corporate style of the hotel - each room is individual and the public areas have their own style. Long distance from Reception to my room, involving many steps. I am reasonably fit and only had a small suitcase so it wasn't really a problem but anyone with physical difficulties would need to request assistance - especially as there is no lift.

Perfect location in Newbury town centre, parking close to entrance, efficient unobtrusive service, comfortable bed. Shower over the bath was rather confined.

We liked the hotel very much . The dining areas were modern & breakfast was excellent. The Friday evening meal was a let down as the lamb was very undercooked & tough. But our room was comfortable & cosy & what I would describe as " shabby chic " No flowers in the entrance reception area.

Staff were great, very helpful and friendly. Lovely choice at breakfast. We would stay again, but would have to make sure we had a room / ensuite without steps into each room. These are not complaints as such, but it was very hot when we were visiting, the room was too hot. We had windows open, curtains shut to keep sun out, but we were very uncomfortable. Did not like the steps to the bedroom or the steps up to the bathroom. We also popped into the bar a couple of times. There were no staff to serve, so we went to the pub next door.

Friendly and helpful staff The rooms need refurbishing. The location of my room was poor as it overlooked a beer garden which caused noise in the evening.

All the staff were friendly and efficeint. The dinning areas and bars were modern, clean and very well presented. Food was lovely. Our room was a little dated, and bed not very comfortable. The bar didn't have a very good selection of draught beers.

Emma the receptionist worked her little socks off and practically ran the place. she was efficient polite and really did have excellent customer service skills. A wasted asset in this hotel to be honest. Room had been redecorated but bathroom required refit. Door did not lock on bathroom or shut. Breakfast poor quality, tea very weak. Room very hot and stuffy. In old part of hotel and floors uneven throughout hall way. No lift to second floor.

The central position is very good and the lady working on reception when we booked in was excellent and couldn't do enough to help us. The doors on the landing and the window in our room had been painted that day and it reeked of paint and as it was quite a warm evening and the windows only open a few innches it was really unpleasant. We felt the breakfast at £12.50 per person is a rip off as I received half a poached egg and a quarter of a mushroom amongst my "full english breakfast". The waiting staff really didn't want to be there and I certainly wouldn#t revisit due to the poor service and poor breakfast.

Excellent town centre position. Good car park at rear. I knew this hotel 50 years ago when it was an excellent county-town hotel and the best in the area. Times have changed and so has the hotel which is now a bit shabby and caters for a different clientele. We shared the breakfast room with a gang of road workers in their working gear who were apparently guests at the hotel. Bedrooms were still comfortable and reasonably clean. The bar is soulless and hardly used which is not surprising. Service at breakfast reminded us of the famous Julie Walters sketch "Two Soups".

Basics were good - bed, shower and excellent breakfast (but no black pudding as listed on the menu). Generous supply of coffee/milk. Not an issue but no loo brush (didn't need it anyway!) and the bathroom window pully rope was broken so could not open or at least stay open. Curiously the dinner menu had no price and had to locate a member of staff who knew what the 3 course cost.

“We booked up at the The Crab for our anniversary, and wow! Lovely location, staff very friendly and helpful, the theamed room we stayed in (Bird Island) was very clean, the bed was really comfy, then when you open the curtains you see the patio with the hot tub! The restaurant was very romantically light which was nice and the food was amazing, they even do a dessert to share with a little bit of everything if you can't make up your mind what to have. Would we stay there again? Yes ” Mark, Aldershot |
