The staff were extremely helpful.
There was no lift.
Overall a lovely place to stay, my husband and I stayed on our wedding night, appart fromno effort made by hotel to congratulate us, and the bed being rather loud when my husband fidgeted in his sleep, making and exta activity out of the question or the guests next doo would have had to listen! The hotel itself was lovely.
Large bedroom very comfortably arranged. 24 hour access invaluable. As we arrived during the night carrying the minimum of baggage the tea/coffee facilities much appreciated. Can walk straight from the hotel into the High Street.
Cheap Big rooms Convenience
Slightly tired bed
The hotel is a little tired but the price reflected this - it was very reasonable. Flower boxes looked dingy and the overall appearance of the rooms could do with a lick of paint
The breakfast on the first night room was a nice size
The noise from the bar up the street . The noise from the wedding in the hotel .the breakfast on the second morning we stayed was cold was served in a different room as a buffet .catering for wedding guests .
The location, the staff, the breakfast.
The stairs to rooms.
I could not fault the facilities in the hotel and will definitely stay there again when next in Newbury
I stayed in room 305 but the floorboards in the bedroom above were somewhat creaky when the occupant above moved about
Great all round stay, nothing to dislike and made welcome. Food highly brecommended.
Location, large room and considerate of single occupancy female quests.
The hotel is probably clean but it's rather down at heel so doesn't feel it. There's no way of getting in the hotel after 11pm if you haven't got use of a mobile phone. A door bell and/or keys for guests are needed.
Proximity to town easy access to local amenities and road network; Time of occupancy the hotel was quiet; room I had overlooked the secluded rear garden. Car park of ample size.
Well located for central Newbury. Reasonable price for the location.
With no lifts if you have heavy luggage it's awkward. Although on saying that that is not a unique situation in the hotel "world".
I booked Chequers as all my friends had booked to stay whilst we were in Newbury. I didn't look at it properly and wasn't really expecting anything amazing, but I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the rooms were, clean, well kept for an old hotel, nice flat screen tv.
Some of it old and tired.
Lovely old building and nice town.
Very hot in rooms and upstairs. no air con. The windows hardly opened so no air to circulate
The size of the room was great. The beds were comfy and the hospitality drinks and biscuits were very welcome.
Good service. quality meals, nice atmosphere, rooms were tidy and value for money except for comments mentioned on (what I don't like)
Unable to cool the room down even with fan running. No air flow or extraction in bathroom tended to be noisy at night by people walking through premises on way home?
The staff were attentive and polite and the lunch we had in the restaurant and the breakfast the following morning were first class. Not forgetting the very reasonable price.
Rotten window frames in room and tacky floor covering in bathroom. The staircase was covered in dust and large areas of walls and many doors in need of cleaning and fresh coat of paint. Many parts of the hotel were suffering from neglect..
size of room, friendliness of staff, breakfast, bar area and location
bit noisy if you have a room at the front as it is on a main road
The room, the bed was as comfy as any I have slept in. Excellent dinner in the restaurant. Good location, very friendly staff. Would love to stay as a tourist next time and bring my partner - she would love it.
The waitress had not quite mastered the filling of tea pots at breakfast.
The room (actually a suite) was excellent and had recently been refurbished to a high standard. Good parking and very close to all amenities.
Missing vertical posts on the banisters at the half landing on the stairs, which a child could possibly slip through (We were travelling with a 3 year old) The decor in corridors and stairs was a bit tatty, but maybe they are next to be refurbished.
We have come to Newbury for the Ladies day racing for the last 4 years, we tried a different hotel the last time that we came 2 years ago, we much preferred the Chequers hotel so decided to stay there again.
no fans for the rooms which is needed in each room when tempertures are 30 degrees. The heated towel rail was broken which left the heat full on all the time we was in the room which was unbearable when it was 30 degrees outside.Hotel could do with decorating and updating.
Badly in need of refurbishment. No fried eggs at breakfast - would you believe! Very unhelpful female member of staff on a phone call
The room we booked can't be faulted. Huge 4 poster bed, gorgeous bathroom and spotless throughout.
The facade of the hotel doesn't make you want to go in. If we hadn't already booked it we wouldn't have considered it when driving I to Newbury. The communal areas were in need of Auckland of paint and the carpets on the stairs and hallways were in need of a serious hoover!!
