Staff really helpful Toilet didn't work Ordered newspaper that never arrived Spa is poor. Steam room didn't work, a sauna would be better which you could go to with your partner (ie not one in men's changing room and another in the female changing room). In fact all that was available to us was a small cold pool. Loud disco kept us awake most of Saturday night.

First and foremost the helpfulness, friendliness and politeness of staff. In our room: the modern floral pictures and an openable window (not a feature of our previous hotel). We liked the village of Penkridge within easy walking distance with interesting small shops. Climbing so many stairs to get to our room – there is no lift and I am semi-disabled. The noise at night from neighbouring leisure facilities.

Location - good stopover from Hampshire to Lake District. Loved the fact that the bath filled up in about 1 min - lovely and relaxing after a long drive. The breakfast was superb, filled us up for the whole date. Very good quality. The rooms were a bit shabby and run down compared to other Mecure Hotels, but it was clean and the bed was comfortable.

The room was a good size and very clean. They allowed us to take our dog which was the whole reason I chose the hotel. Food menu was limited but what we had was very tasty, I would say it was more pub food than restaurant style however no complaints about it. We stayed one night as we were attending an event in Stafford and it was ideally located for this. Staff pleasant, particularly the young lady on reception. Some of the corridors and fire doors were definately in need of decoration- were looking very scuffed and shabby - although the room we had looked recently decorated and was very nice. Some disturbance until late at night due to a party - noones fault,- as it was so hot we had the windows open and all the sound carried. The white wine was lukewarm.

Well located and good value but the building and fittings were looking rather tired and in some instances shabby. The reception/sitting area was overcrowded during a wedding party .

A very sad hotelin need of refurbishment. Very poor quality of decoration.Pool very dirty. In our room the toilet only worked if the top was removed and you manually operated the workings. In the morning the heating failed in our room meaning we were unwilling to take a shower with temps outside -6. The manager did slightly reduce our tariff but I would have preferred to pay for a full use of the hotel.

Overnight stops on way to one week holiday- first stop OK - return journey they had no record of our booking but eventually sorted this out with booking.com. What if they had been fully booked? Would not recommend the restaurant either for the food or for the long wait to be served

Cold bedroom, radiators not working properly, decor was shabby; walls with marks, needed painted, reception not very inviting - needed painted also, skirting boards filthy, food below average, not up to the standard one would expect in a Mercure Hotel. The staff did apologise although most with little customer service experience. Not good value for money.

The room was lovely and the hotel has a nice ambience. We thought the food - both evening and breakfast - was expensive and ate elsewhere locally for a fraction of the price.

Only 2 points I would like bring up realy the heating in your hotel was at times unbearable radiators in the room could not be turned down and were on full blast, and the other point is the length of time I and my friends waited for our food on ordering and the time between courses and I ordered a coffee in the morning which took 20 minutes to arrive other than these points everything was excellant.

The room was spacious and comfortable. Staff were helpful and attractive. Not a complaint, rather a few suggestions. The room service menu was quite limited for main courses and I found the prices to be quite high for what you get. The wifi signal was ok most of the times, but sometimes dropped out or locked up for no reason.

Proximity to friends we were visiting The hotel was noisy and so diifficult to sleep. Room was too warm despite turning off the heating. Access to the room with a buggy up three flights of stairs (no lift) was very awkward. Breakfast service was poor in an overcrowded function room. Insufficient staff.

The hotel offers a lot of facilities but if you want to eat in the restaurant I recommend you book early. I didn't and ended up eating in the bar area which wasn't the most comfortable. Also, the service is a little bit like Faulty Towers....hit and miss and generally a great stay

A clean comfortable hotel, with friendly and efficient staff. We stayed at the hotel en route from Scotland to Cornwall, and were very pleased our half-way stop turned out so successfully. Got our holiday off to a good start. Lovely surroundings, we enjoyed a walk around Penkridge before a well presented dinner in the restaurant.

The staff were very helpful and polite.breakfast was exe'cellant value. We stayed at a travel lodge prior rooms. Mercure was 17 pounds cheaper but far superior and when we go to Alton towers we will use the hotel again. Baths are a little worn. Great value, better and cheaper than travel lodge. Spa a lovely extra and breakfast excellent and the staff were very helpful and polite.
