A 5-minute walk from Ambleside and a mile from Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, this charming guest house was originally 2 separate Victorian cottages.
Score from 73 reviews Exceptional
The staff are friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean. The location is good, right in the middle of Ambleside with all the shops and restaurants and 10mins walk from the lake.
The access to the car park is very narrow, not good for big cars as we found it tight with our small Fiesta, the tv only had 5 working channels and the Wifi connected, but we didn't have access to the internet.
Comfortable room, helpful stuff and tasty breakfast!
Wifi is not very good.. Sometimes unavailable.
Not much but was ok
Tv staff some were to seats
The room was clean & tidy, bedding crisp & clean, good furniture (not MDF) no noise from road or the karaoke in the bar. A good full English breakfast, not greasy & served on hot plates. Staff cheerful and friendly.
There is no lift, I have a knee problems and found the stairs a little difficult. Good width for carrying bags
clean breakfast verry good staff verry nice had a good weekend
Room was lovely and clean. Breakfast very good
Shower was either extremely hot or extremely cold could not get a constant temp.
Stayed for one night at Christmas whilst visiting family in Ambleside. Second time we have stayed at the Churchill Nothing fancy, clean, comfortable, good breakfast, excellent location and it's a pub. Can't fault it for the price.
The only thing I don't like is the car park, it's very small with some of the spaces being reserved for a couple of cottages and it's very tight getting in out but it is what it is and it certainly wouldn't put me off staying there again.
Room very comfortable and excellent breakfast.
Car park entrance very narrow
This place had a bar underneath that was more of a sports bar/karaoke spot and as I brought two small children wife and their Grandparents from America, was upset to find the bar was banging out the tunes on our first floor room til 12:30am. This obviously wasn't condusive to having a peaceful night with two under 3's! Or anyone for that matter... We had to find other places to relax and chill out in the evenings (Sheila's Cottage was lovely) as you couldn't hear yourself think downstairs in the bar. This isn't a problem if that's what you're after, but the write up didn't really mention the thumping base permeating through the walls that we heard on BOTH Friday and Saturday night. Just coming into a semi-crowded bar from the street just to get to your room (after getting past the doorman) was an adventure as you'll have probably seen from other reviews. The consensus was that the owner was more bothered about making and saving money than the welfare of his tenants. I say saving money as they seemed to switch he heat off every night and the rooms were freezing! Again, two small kids... I will give them the benefit of the fact that rooms were large and clean, but based on the other things I have stated, I wouldn't consider staying here again and will be a little more careful the next time I book something like this as I like to be warm and hear myself think before I go to bed. As does the rest of my young family.
Good value for money . Nice furnishings and good breakfast.
Noisy karaoke if on 1st floor.
Central location - conveniently situated in the town.
Half an hour window for breakfast. Bar was a "sports bar", not great for family / couples.
The lovely warm friendly environment
Location and view from bedroom is amazing
Getting into car park and parking the car can be a bit tight advise not to have a big car
Very central for pretty much everything, once there we didn't use the car at all. Friendly staff, quick check in and out. Clean and comfortable room. Would be happy to go back.
Room was spacious and clean large bathroom , good breakfast and service , value for money .
Only downside was rooms were above a busy pub with live music while late , if we were 15/20 years younger would luv it .
Good location, clean room and bathroom. Great breakfast.
Shower didn't work no heating on at night was advised by the owner on a timer nothing could be done it was freezing!
Room was clean Big bathroom
Staff were not really on the ball. Carpark???? Held a out 5 cars and I'm sure they were all staff cars.... The Noise from the Music was horrific. We could feel the bass in our room never mind hear it until the early hours.
Very freindly staff looked after us very well !!! Thankyou
The staff at Churchills were all very pleasant and helpful, nothing was too much trouble - even went out to get gluten free bread for my husband.
Staff friendly central location comfortable rooms
Churchill is a lovely little no frills hotel above a pub. Good value for money and you can't hear the pub from the upstairs rooms.
Nothing really the bathroom was very clean but very basic, however for the money we paid we expected no less... Would have liked a bath but that's just being very very picky
The cooked breakfast was excellent.
Music was played in the bar until midnight every night. This made sleeping impossible before midnight.
Value for money. Friendly staff . Good breakfast. Central location. Clean comfortable rooms.
The narrow access to the car park is a bit of an adventure.
the location was great and the staff were very good and helpful.
