Score from 60 reviews Very good
we are a young couple, first time away together. On our arrival the staff upgraded us to a superior suite. we had a lovely time, the food in the restaurant was excellent.
The room was a little cold but the bed was lovely and warm with a good thick quilt.
Furnishings and decor. Beautiful old building c.11th century. Eclectic mix works brilliantly. Excellent bar popular with locals ( great draught beers ). dinner well above expectations and breakfast excellent. Sorry it was only for one night. Really friendly staff.
The fact that we couldn't stay longer
wonderful historical building. peaceful location. handy for Brixham by the back road. plenty of parking space. being upgraded.
inadequate light for reading
Quirkiness of the hotel and atmosphere. Food was good.
Room 19 is on the main through fare and very noisy, the bed is very firm and the pillows need replacing. The TV has very few channels that work. When you check in they swipe your credit card for £1.00 however this was not refunded when we settled the bill.
We had a lovely room overlooking the front courtyard. When we came back in evening we could hear the bell practice from the church next door. The breakfast was excellent. Good location to visit Brixham and local National Trust gardens.
We couldn't stay longer!
Chose to stay here for my 40th birthday and had a fab time. Free upgrade on room on arrival which was stunning. Staff very welcoming and helpful. The food was amazing. Cant wait to visit again.
Atmospheric even though a bit dark. Food we had was good and choice of ale was good. Staff friendly.
The hotel was lovely and full of character. Our room had a fantastic four poster bed and a fabulous sized bathroom with huge shower AND bath! Breakfast was delicious with a good choice. The staff were friendly and very helpful.
Friendly staff and a good breakfast
The wonderful four poster bed and decor. The knight at the top of the stairs!
Kept awake until 2am on three consecutive nights by loud and obnoxious guests falling out of the bar and fighting screaming and howling in the forecourt of the hotel. Beds last replaced in about 1990.....very uncomfortable.
bedroom was more like a cell
It was such a lovely quirky place so old ie worldie room was comfortable and clean a peaceful setting in the country and quiet .Would reccomend it to friends as a peacful romantic retreat.
Staff very helpful and attentive. Bed comfortable. Food very well cooked and breakfast very good. Attractive grounds. I would recommend this hotel if the person loved the idea of maybe seeing a ghost and loved old dark buildings!
The thought of ghosts freaked me out so didn't sleep well - to be fair I did know about the ghosts but thought I would be ok with it. I wasn't! Restaurant and rooms all too dark and gloomy for me and my daughter so would not return. Food expensive in restaurant.
Very friendly staff, wonderful luxury rooms. I great breakfast to start the day. Surrounding and peaceful and picturesque. Would defiantly stay there again.
A litre too expensive
Location to wedding venue Breakfast, food good and hot Sausages very nice All well cooked Tea and coffee in room Wifi probably useful but didn't use it Nice garden
Dark room, bathroom even darker despite light over sink- almost impossible to apply make up. A chair in the room would have been useful. Quite noisy with slamming doors and creaking floors, abated reasonably early until the early risers got up!! Huge bags of laundry? Piled at the top of the stairs. Carpets tired. Do not like pepper and would prefer not to have this already put on my fried egg when it arrived.
lunch in the garden fabulous, comfy leather sofas in bar, lovely rooms very clean, lovely bathroom. Great dinner.
Poor water pressure but older building so understandable. Breakfast tables and cutlery seen better days
The age and ambience of the building which dated back to the 11c. The food both in the restaurant and the bar was superb. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The hotel'location in proximity to Brixham was great. Lots of parking in the grounds.
We were in room 6 "Elizabeth 1". The bathroom which was a new addition to the old building had not been thought through. A bath had been installed with a shower attachment over but it was impossible to use the shower because of the sloping roof and the side wall unless you knelt down in the bath. There was also trip hazards both in the bathroom and as you entered the bedroom. The furniture was ill-positioned making it difficult to get around the bed and also for plugging the kettle in (this had to be moved from its location on the table to the other side of the room to use a floor socket. It was a dual aspect room with a potential lovely outlook but the windows were covered in creeper and foilage so you could not see out. The grounds were also in need of a bit of a tidy up.
age of property
very poor wifi even in bar area. dirty and run down
Gorgeous building...steeped in history and very atmospheric. Lovely bathroom and extremely comfortable bed. Excellent dinner and breakfast.Lovely staff.
Our room was above the kitchen with a fairly noisy extractor fan. However, it was turned off by 10.30pm and not on again until around 8am, so it disturbed us very little.
The bar atmosphere and the very enjoyable meal we ate in the bar
The small gloomy room appreciate 13th century inn but more lighting would have made stay more comfortable. No shower in Queen Anne room making things difficult as my husband has 2 artificial hips and unable manage high sided bath. I am able bodied but found washing my hair extremely difficult. Unable to lie down in small bath I leant over bath using provided very low water pressure hand shower, this took a toll on my back which was rather sore fo for the rest of the day.
Excellent staff Hotel full of character. Peaceful country location, but within easy reach of Brixham. Lovely walks close by.
Outside seating areas and gardens.
Front door was still locked early in the morning so you couldn't exit the building as the key wasn't available . Not ideal from a Health and Safety aspect.
Good location for visiting Greenway by steam train and Coleton Fishacre. Excellent breakfast in historic surroundings.
The wisteria around the windows needed a trim as it made the room very dark. Bath rather difficult to get out of.
The 15th or 16th century feel of the place. Excellent Cornish beer on tap.
