Excellent staff and great location
Stained wash basin
Very near to Exeter city. Good facilities and free Wifi
close to city centre
Reasonable sized room - good sized bathroom The room was well equipped- long time since I stayed somewhere where there was an iron & board in the room !
The room was a bit "over furnished " The gap between the dressing table and the bed was a bit small -hit my leg on more than one occasion !- The hotel needs to put a waste bin in the bathroom !
all staff were lovely and great atmosphere. Food was delicious!
the decor in the bathroom was a little tired but didn't affect our stay.
Location, close to town, nice to have a bar down stairs, no noise from bar area, massive bed, very comfy,
Bath room could do with updating, shower didn't get that hot, fine for me but not the missus.
The room was excellent and the customer services!
Very, very comfortable beds and decent sized room. Cleanliness of bedroom, bathroom and unfailing helpfulness and friendliness of staff. Excellent position in town yet easy to get out of town to and from motorway. The quiet rooms at the back of the building really are quiet with no traffic noise.
Rather beery smell from carpets and run-down appearance of lounge area which was in complete contrast to newly refurbished bedrooms. Having to pay for town car-park (between 8am and 6pm).
the big beer garden, easy acsses to twon
Our stay was a gift for my birthday, we had a lovely stay. My only critism was the hallway from the bar area to the hotel, it was very drab and uninviting. Just needs a little TLC and a lick of paint. However the rooms were the nicest we'd ever stayed in! Thanks so much
Staff very good, hotel basic. Typical English Pub Food And Accommodation. THe Walls,The Quay and the Cathedral are interesting.
Not much. Decent sized room.
Every carpet was heavily stained and mould had grown around all the bathroom units. It is a pub with rooms, not an hotel, and it looks like the pub customers spilled drinks on every stair of the staircase and over a lot of the carpet in my room. Felt really dirty.
Huge super king bed, really comfy, spotless room. Great pub downstairs with very accommodating staff. Lovely food, good choice of wines, wonderful, large outdoor seating. Fantastic, highly recommended.
Wifi a bit patchy.
Close to city centre , walking distance to restaurants and bars.
Noise from road late at might which transferred into hotel and corridors ! Shower was broken!
Very clean and comfy! Great location! Awesome cookies, very nice breakfast and coffee! Staff is very funny and helpful :)
Good all round hotel
Stair carpets need renewing to give a better first impression
The garden area was beautiful.
Would have booked somewhere else if we had known there was no lift, it was too much for my mother climbing the stairs even though she was on the first floor. Door keys had to be reprogrammed on second night!! Being locked in at night...although we could get to the garden late there were no lights on to find our way round in the dark. Decor in the rooms needs some TLC. Curtains too heavy for hooks and have damaged the header tape and were gaping letting sun in when it came up. Lack of strawberry jam for breakfast..no choc spread.. Bathroom slopes down towards the bath
It was quite old and looking a bit dirty
Almost everything very good, though didn't eat at hotel so can't review that. Good twin room at back of hotel (no. 8), nice and peaceful despite central Exeter location. Couldn't hear people in busy pub/bar downstairs either... Iron, ironing board and hairdryer all in room, as well as free Wi-Fi - we thought it good value all round.
Slightly sloping floor in room 8 was fairly easy to get used to (one of the quirks of a very old building, we assumed!). However, this meant that there was a sizeable triangular gap under the door as this had not been custom-fitted. Therefore the loud conversation in the corridor outside, between some guests returning to their rooms at around 2.30ish a.m., might as well have taken place next to my bed! We also decided to pull our case across the gap to block out the all-night light from the corridor as the door was opposite our beds.
Very friendly and great place
Room was big and clean. Location was the best. Staff was friendly/helpful. Odd, not bad, first impression when I walked into City Gate. I walked into a pub with lots of people milling around. Seemed like an overgrown, fancy youth hostel. Impression changed as I saw more.
The carpeting was disfigured near, on the way to my room. Terrible first impression.
this is very good value and the food was excellent Staff are always friendly
only that it is getting popular so not always available
Location not far from train station Choice of beers on tap Dinner menu good pub food, good quantity and reasonably priced Beer garden very nice place to have dinner and some beers on nice summers evening
Hot water temperature in shower could have been bit hotter.
