The owner was very welcoming. The breakfast was quite good. The room was quite old and tired looking. The bathroom had no vent to remove steam, consequently the tile grouting was black. After stays in many other hotels, we expect a much better standard of decor for the price we paid.

It was a nice little house, nice pictures on the walls. The fellow who checked us in gave us misinformation (though not intentionally) on whether or not we could store bags until we boarded the cruise ship, after check out. This caused us a hassle in the morning. He did not tell us that checkout was 10:00 a.m., and then he surprised us with a knock on our door at 9:50 a.m. to say that we had 10 minutes to vacate. He was nowhere around after that to help get the bags down the three flights. He unceremoniously showed us the front door. I've never had a legit bum's rush before this, and it was extremely unpleasant.

The manager was very friendly and was able to give us a lovely breakfast before we had to go to the ferry. He also offered to make some sandwiches instead of breakfast. We needed a meal when we arrived and the hotel was quite a way from the town centre and although the hotel was fine, the surrounding area was a bit threatening.

The room is very nice and clean, and the bathroom too. the fare is very good. The hotel is not in a central position, the parking is very small and the breakfast is not so good. There are only pale curtains and light disturbs early your sleeping

We chose to stay at Clare House because it had parking and was conveniently placed near Dover Castle which we intended to visit. Although as British travellers we found the accommodation and breakfast okay we were slightly embarrassed by the continental breakfast which was served to some German guests whilst we were there. Although, for us this was not an unpleasant experience I think if our host had paid a little bit more attention to detail it would have made a huge difference. For example, better quality bread, fresh flowers on the breakfast table and proper salt and pepper cellers. None of these cost a lot of money, and at 60.00 a night - surely not too extravagent either

Leaving Surly reception from owner : lack of flexibility of breakfast hours : no headroom in bathroom : general feeling of "what do you expect from a cheap hotel?"

The staff were very friendly. They couldn't do enough for us. We were offered a packed lunch in place of breakfast as soon as they realised we were an early check out. Clare House was perfectly situated for the ferry to Calais. Would definately stay there again. The only problem was the pillows. There were too many crammed into each pillow case making it feel like a brick. The bed was comfy but I think new pillows would have made it perfect.

We found the accommodation both clean and comfortable. The owner was very helpful and pleasant as was his wife. Excellent breakfast to set you up for the day. We used the hotel as a base to attend the open golf at Sandwich, so the railway station nearby was a big bonus. We would not hesitate to use this accomodation again, and it would be an ideal stop point for anyone prior to catching a ferry to France!

The cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired. Sheets were old and frayed. Shower cubicle was filthy, shower headonly dribbled water and we could not shower properly, net curtains dirty, TV did not work. Carpet stained and dirty, filthy marks on the walls, copious amounts of dust. As we are both disabled we had to climb 3 flights of stairs with no assistance with our luggage. We could not partake of breakfast as we had a very early start, yet we were still charged for it. I do have photographs should you wish to see the evidence.

Very conveniently located, walking distance from railway station and £6-£8 taxi ride to ferry terminal. Owner very friendly, offered us a drink on arrival. Cheaper than a lot of the bigger hotels and a good breakfast included. Rooms vary in size and shape, 4 poster room was nice.
